QEORG E WILLIAM BERRY, OF ROSE BAY, NEAR SYDNEY, NEM' SOUTH WALES, AUS- TRALIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE WIRELESS HINGE MANUFACTURII i'G COMPANY LIMITED, OF SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
AIPARA'JIUS FOR CONNECTING THE BODIES AND LIDS 0F BRJBSSED SHEET-METAL Original application filed April 22, 1916,
comprising a body portion formed with bulbed tongues and a rimmed lid portion adapted to fit over the body portion with hinge pintles formed integrally upon the lid rim upon whichicpintles said bulbed tongues are closed by the apparatus to form a wireless hinge joint uniting said body and lid, and is a division of my co-pending application filed April 22, 1916 and'bearing the Serial No. 93,013.
The apparatus comprises simple and efii-- cient means designed so that the bulbed tongues are closed over the pintles in such a '\\'a y that the lids will be correctly hinged and (1)811 and close quite freely on the re ceptacie.
In order that the invention may be read My understood reference wil'l now be had to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings, whereiir Figure 1 is a new iiiperspective ofthe baelepart of a body showing bulbed tongues formed thereon to receive the pintles of a lid.
F ig; 2 is a view in PGI'SPGCtlX G of the back part' of a lid showing the pintles formed integrally thereon.

being shown in posi .ion for engagement on the die block.
'Fig; 6 is a view i1 sectional elevation of the punch and die black, showing the punch down on the die. Jlock and the bulbed tongues on the body closed over the pintles of the lid.
Fig. 7 is a view i1 perspective. showing a lid and body as tittid together by the (dos in}: apparatus.
The back of the )ody 1 formed with raised tongues ha \dng inwardly opening bulbs 2 formed the reon to receive pintles 3 formed on a depznding portion 4 of a lid The pintles project latcrally from the ends of the depending portion 4 and slots 6 are formed letween the pintles and the back of the lid iiin to'accommodate the ends of the bullied tongues when the same are 'elosed over the pintles.
The body 1 is then placed over the vertical side of the closing die block 7 and the said die block inclining toward the back of the body, so that the pintles .3 come directly beneath the lailbs 2 on the tongues which are then closed over the pintles 3 by the downward move ment of the compound closing punch 8.
The punch 8 of tlie closing die. is formed in two parts, one p: rt 9 being fixed in. the ram and the other part 10 being slidable against backing springs 11. The slide. 10 normally projects below the fixed part 9, and as the punch di scends the two parts 9' and 10" are brought to hear one on either side, of the bulborspartof the raised ton ues and close them over the intles 3.
I ho contiguous lower corners o the two parts of the closing: punch 5 are. corner fluted as at 12' to pc rmit of the punch coming hard home without injuring the bulbs2j or the pintles 3.
.The fixed part 9 of the closing punch s formed with dope riding projections 13 which are adapted to pass through the slots at v ing project' ns '13 approximate in size to the outer ends of the bulbed tongues, and.
bearupon the upper sides and rounded ends of the said bulbs.
The closing die bl 36k 7 is formed within central depression 14 to accommodate the depressed portion 15 on the back of the receptacle body, and in the face of the said die block at the'ends of-the depression 14 are recesses 16 shaped to receive the edges of the sg tpck from which the pintles are formed. k,
The bu] 2 when the tongues are closed, are sufliciently large to permit free pivotal movement of the pintles 3 when the lid is being, o 'ened"a-nd closcd.-
\Vhat I do claim is I An apparatus for hingedly connecting a rimmed lid having pintles formed integrally on one rim thereof to a receptacle body having bulbed tongues inclining outwardly comprising a die-block shaped on one side to accommodate the receptacle body in :1
vertical position and shaped on the 0pp0- site side to support the lid at. an angle to the receptacle body, a compound, punch having 'a fixed and a movableoperative part, said movable part depending below the fixed ,part and slidable against resilient .mcmhers, a groove formed by cutting away the longitudinal contiguous corners of the fixed and movable parts, and projections npproximating in size to one half of-said bullied tongues formed on the face of the fixed "part of'said compound punch.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
