To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, ROBERT GnocHINI, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Test Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certainnew anduseful Improvements in Lock-Case-Reversing Mechanisms, of which the following is a full, clear, and. exact description.
The especial object of this invention is to provide a case as for instance that of a combination lock "for a safe which may be caused, by means cooperative therewith, to have a position reversed from its normal position at which the knob or actuating member is exposed and accessible, whereby it will be impossible for an unauthorized person to operate the device and unlock the safe. In carrying out the invention the combination lock case is revolubly mounted in the door of the safe, which door carries a bank of push buttons, certain ones, less than the whole of which, known to the proprietor, or a trusted employee, only, when simultaneously pushed in establish a circuit for operating a motor which is effective for moving the lock case to its knob exposed position whereby the combination may be operated to render the locking bolts (forming no part of the invention) free to be unlocked, in the usual manner,the apparatus moreover comprising means for the overturning of the lock case, to cause the knobprovided side of the lock case to overturn, or inwardly disappear and be concealed and inaccessible, when the safe is locked.
Although the invention has been primarily designed as a revoluble lock-case-controlling device it is applicable for employment in conjunction with any revoluble 7 piece or element any given positioning of which is to be controlled by the operating of a predetermined number of push buttons or circuit closers less than the whole number of a set included in the 'ap1:)aratus,the remainder of the circuit closers of the set by their particular arrangement and'factors as electrical controllers, contributing in the safeguarding of the apparatus against having the object for which it is designed defeated.
The invention of electro mechanical character is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and diagrams and is defined in the claims,

In the drawings, A represents the lock case mounted within the hollow door B and having. gear teeth a 'therearound with which meshes a gear wheel 7) intermediate between the teeth a on the lock case and the gear wheel @Z on the shaft of a reversibly operating electric motor C.
' W henthe motor is run in ,one direction, the lock case A will be turned through half -a revolution from the position shown in ably mounted and insulated with which a circuit closing member D, carried by the revoluble lock case coacts,the said pairs of contacting members F, R and D being included in the means for efiecting'the discontinuance of the running of the motor when 1 the lock case has been revolubly moved to either of its opposite limits, as will hereinafter be more fully explained.
For the motor a source of electrical supply is provided, here indicated as a battery E, and the motor is one understood as series wound. 4 r
From the battery a wire 15 runs to one contact lfi comprised in a switch carried by a slidable armature collar 7 coacting between opposed electromagnets g and h.
-Also carried on the extension 7, formed of insulating material, of the armature colthe field of the mot-or the wire 23 runs to 7 connection back to contact 19,
The contact 21 is connected by wire 27 with the contact 18 adjacent the one 19, and the armature carried contact or switch member 17 has wire 21 connecting into the armature of the electric motor, while the wire 25 runs from the connection with the motor armature back to the generator E.
Then by the energizing of the electromagnet g the armature collar is drawn to said electromagnet, the circuit will be established through the current conductors just described in the direction of the arrows for causing what is herein termed the forward running of the motor, so that through the mechanical connections between such motor and the lock case, the case will be turned from its position the reverse of that shown in Figs. 1 and to the position shown in said figures.
The armature carried contacts 16 and 17 when thrust against the contacts 20, 21, will cause a reversal of the current through the field of the motor, that is the current passing through the wires 22 and 23 will be in a direction the reverse of that indicated by the arrows annexed to said wires.
The contact 20 is by wire 26 connected with contact 19, and contact 21 is by wire 27 connected with contact 18,these latter wiring connections being merely to form in a simple way connections from the contacts 20 and 21 with the motor field wires 23 and 22.
Now, if by the energizing of the electromagnet h the armature collar is drawn to such magnet and the contacts 16 and 17 are on the contacts 20, 21, the conditions are established for the reversal of the current through the field of the motor, so that it will run in a direction opposite to that heretofore referred to,the course of such current for the reversal being from generator E by wire 15 to contact 16, thence to contact 20, thence by wire 26 to contact 19 and from such contact to the wire 23 leading to the motor field in the reversed direction, the current having passed into the motor field goes by wire 22 in a direction the reverse of that shown by the arrow in the diagrams, to contact 18, thence by wire 27 to contact 21, passing to the armature carried contact 17 and by way of the wire 24 into the arma ture department of the motor, and thence by way of the wire 25 back to the generator.
The combination push button or permutative contact controlled device for theactuation of the contacts 16, 17, which are carried by the oppositely movable armature collar appurtenant to the opposed electromagnets r and 71, (which in substance is an electromagnet circuit controlling switch) will be now described The numerals 1 to 12 inclusive in the diagram represent a bank of push buttons opposite which are contacts designated by reference characters 1*, 2 3, etc., up to 12 5 represents a battery from which wire 30 runs and which by tapped inbranches has connections with all of the series of the 12 contacts 1 to 12, excepting certain selected ones thereof, which excepted contacts in the diagram are those 5 and 9.
The push button 1 has connection by wire 1 with contact 5 and push button 5 has connection by wire 5" with push button 9 so that when buttons 1, 5 and 9 are simultaneously closed against the contacts 1, 5, and 9 that which was normally a trebly open connection including the wire 30 will be closed; and from the last one of the so connected sets of contacting members, here the one 9, a wire 31 runs to the electromagnet g the return wire 32 returning to the battery The wire 33 has by tapped-in branches, connections with the push buttons 2, 3 and (5 to 12 inclusive,the same running to connection with the aforementioned wire 32 leading back to the battery.
These push buttons 1, 5 and 9 are simultaneously closed against the respective adjacent contacts, the battery current will be by way of wire 30 through the connected series of buttons 1, 5 and 9 and appurtenant contacts, thence by wire 31 to electromagnet g, the current returning to the battery by the wire 32; and the current so established energizing the electromagnet 9 will be eii'ective to draw the armature collar 7 onto the same for the result of establishing the motor circuit hereinabove first described, and causing the running of the motor to revolubly move the lock case for the presentation of the same so that the permutation knob or handle A thereof is presented outermost,the motor having a duration of its running until the member D carried thereby is brought to close the pair of contacts F.
One of the coacting contacts F has wire 36 connecting it with wire 32 while the other of such contacts has wire 37 connecting it with wire 31, so that when the motor has sufliciently revolubly moved the lock case, the circuit which had energized the electromagnet g is short circuited or shunted, the current pursuing the shorter and easier course which excludes the electromagnet, under such condition failing, or refusing to pass under resistance through the electromagnet coil or winding wire.
.The armature not now subject to the attraction of electromagnet 9 assumes its centralized position between magnet g and the one 7t by reason of the equalizing springs i.
In case while the selective buttons 1, 5 and 9 are closed in circuit establishing relations to secure actuation of the motor for causin the )resentation of the lock case in what is considered its forward position (having the knob outermost), and an unauthorized person in an attempt to operate the apparatus may push in some or all of the other buttons, the result will be through the wiring connections described,that the current from the battery will pass by wire 30 through any or all of the contacts 2 3 6 to 12*, and back onto wire 32-.
It is to be noted that the particular set T, rof push buttons and contacts have different wiring and are for closing a difierent circuit than that which may be established through any other of the companion push buttons and contacts.
The push button i has wire 39 connected therewith, running to electromagnet h, return wire l0 running from'the electromagnet it back to the battery J as by having, for economy,connection with the aforementioned wir 32.
Therefore, when push button at is closed onto contact l", the current from battery J will be by wire 30, contact a, push button l, wire 39, electromagnet, ener izing the latter and drawing the armature collar f to the rightward so that the contacts 16 and 17 are against the contacts 20 and 21 for insuring the reversed running of the motor C as hereinabove described, so that the lock case will have its half revoluble increment from the position shown in Figs.
1 and 2 to cause the disappearance of the lock operating knob by the diametrically opposite positioning thereof.
The member D at the end of the lock case revolving motion and being brought to close contacts R will result in a stoppage again of the motor by the short circuit which deenergizes the electromagnet it.
While it is desirable in order to estab-' lish a circuit for causing the appearance of the knob-provided side of the lock case, to expose it forwardly to access to operate the several selected ones of the push buttons, unknown to all except the person or persons authorized to open the 'safe,-it is not necessary for the disappearance and inward disposition of the knob-provided side of the lock case to operate more than a single one of the push buttons, although, as manifest, the wiring might be such as to require that a plurality of the buttons be closed against the contacts for establishment of the motor reversing circuit.
Instead of 3 of the buttons and their respective contacts being wired so as necessarily to be closed for the establishment of the forward circuit for the motor, any other number thereof could be included in the wiring for such purpose.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described,
in combination, a revolubly movable lock case, a motor having a revoluble motion imparting connection with said case, a generator, and a normally open circuit including the generator and the motor, electromagnetic closing means for said circuit, and a normally open circuit having connected therein said electromagnet circuit closing means, a generator and a plurality of sets of normally separated contacts, a predetermined or selected number of which have conductors so connected therewith that when all of such selected number of said contacts are closed the said circuit including said electromagnetic circuit closing device will be established.
2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a revolubly movable lock case, a motor having a revoluble motion imparting connection with said case, a generator, and a normally open circuit including the generator and the motor, and an electromagnetic closing switch for such motor circuit, anormally open circuit having connected therein said electromagnet circuitclosing switch, a generator and a plurality of sets of normally separated contacts, a predetermined or selected portion of which have wiring whereby when all of such portions are closed the said circuit including said electromagnetic circuit closing'switch will be established, and means actuated by the revoluble lock case for short circuiting the said second named circuit whereby the electromagnetic switch is deenergized.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a revolubly movable lock case, an electric motor having a motion imparting connection with said case, a generator and a normally open circuit including .the generator and motor, a normallyopen electromagnetic switch for closing the motor circuit, a normally open circuit including a generator and also including, and for actuating, said electromagnetic switch and also including a plurality of sets of normally separated contacts,a predetermined or selected number of which have conductors so connected therewith that when all such se lected number of said contacts are closed the said magnetic switch actuating circuit will be established, and other of said sets of separated contacts having wiring connections with the said switch circuitas to cause when closed a short circuiting to exclude said switch from the actuating circuit therefor.

In a device of the character described, a revoluble lock case, a motor having a revolving connection therewith, a generator and normally open circuit connections, hav ing the generator and motor connected therein, for oppositely running the motor, a switch to close either circuit, opposed electromagnets, an armature betweensuch magnets, carrying said switch, and circuit conductors comprising said magnets and a generator, one of which is normally open and has a closing switch, and the other of which is normally open in several places and has a plurality of closing means, all of which are necessarily to be operated for the complete closing of the circuit.
5. In a device of the character described,
a revoluble lock ease, a-1notor having a revolving connection therewith, a generator and normally open circuit connections, hav ing the generator and motor connected therein, for oppositely running the motor, a switch to close either circuit, opposed electromagnets, an armature between such magnets, carrying said switch, circuit conductors comprising said magnets, carrying said switch, circuit conductors comprising said magnets and a generator, one of Which is normally open and has a closing switch, and the other of which is normally open in several places and has a plurality of closing means, all of which are necessarily to be operated for the complete closing of the circuit, and means for automatically rendering each magnet circuit ineffective at the end of each required revoluble movement of the lock case.
