UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BURTON L. LAWTON, 0F MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO CONNECTICUT TELE- PHONE & ELECTRIC COMPANY, INC., OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OE CONNECTICUT.
WIRE-TERMINAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 25, 1916. Serial No. 80,344.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I BURToN'L. LAWTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Meriden, New Haven county, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful VVire-Terminal, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to terminals for the ends of wires and the objects of the invention are to provide an improved and simplified form of terminal which can be inexpensively manufactured and which can be readily applied to the wire ends.
In the accomplishment of these objects I employ a tubular handle into the open end of which the end of a wire is inserted and mount on the opposite end of said handle a terminal clip which is preferably held against rotation on the end of the handle by seating it in an angular recess in said handle end and which is secured firmly in position by means of a tubular rivet passed through from the interior of the tubular handle and headed over at its opposite end. This rivet provides a coupling between the tubular handle and the terminal clip and also a passage through which a securing screw may be passed into the end of the wire housed in the handle.
Other features of the invention will appear as the specification proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof and wherein I have illustrated the invention embodied in a practical and preferred form.
In said drawing: I
Figure 1 is an enlarged sectional view showing the terminal of my invention applied to the end of a stranded conductor such as used on engine ignition circuits.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the several parts in separated relation.
Considering the drawing now more in detail, 7 designates the so-called ,handle member which is tubular in form and open at one end 8 to receive the end of the insulated wire 9. This handle forms a housing protecting the end of the cable and serves also as a support for the terminal clip.
The opposite end of the handle is formed with an opening 10 therethrough and is further provided with an angular seat or recess 11 in the outer end thereof.
The form of the terminal clip may vary to suit different requirements. In the pres.
ent instance it is illustrated as having a pair of spring arms 12 adapted to embrace the head of a spark-plug or other device, connected by an angular base 13 adapted to fit into the angular seat 11 in the end of the handle, the angular seat and this angular base thus providing cooperating shoulders which hold the terminal clip against rotationon the end of thehandle.
The terminal member or clip is secured in its seat on the end of the handle by means of a tubular rivet 15 extending through the passage 10 in the endof the handle through an opening 16 in the'base of the clip and flanged over at its opposite ends as indicated at 17 and 18.. The flange 18 may be formed on the rivet before its introduction in the passage 10, the usual method of assemblage being to introduce this tubular headed rivet into the passage 10 from the inside of the hollow handle and then to flange the outer exposed end of the rivet over the base of the terminal seated in the recess. By these means the terminal clip is rigidly and firmly secured to the handle member and the seating of the clip in a recess in the end of the handle braces the clip against turning or twisting strains which might otherwise tend to break it away from the handle.
My improved terminal clip is usually secured in position on the wire end by forcing the open end of the handle over the end of the wire and then introducing a screw 20 or similar fastening means into the passage provided by the tubular rivet and into the end of. the wire, the wire being usually stranded as indicated at 21. This screw fastening as it enters in the stranded conductor makes its own thread and by spreading the conductor and the insulation surrounding it serves to all the more firmly secure the terminal in position on the end of the wire. The tubular rivet is made relatively long so as to provide a long bearing for the screw and thus insure its proper engagement in the center of the conductor.
The invention is relatively simple and inexpensive and constitutes a practical and strong terminal construction for wire ends.
What I claim is I An electric terminal member comprlsing a tubular handle portion having a deep opening at one: end to receive the end of an insulated stranded wire, said handle being provided with a relatively shallow recess in with said central passage, and a tubular rivet extending through both passages and headed at each end to thereby rigidly and i permanently secure said base in said angular recess.
