To all whom it may concern: Be it knownthat I, MONTGOMERY SIEETH, 'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feeding and Filling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 1
My invention relates to feeding and .filling machines and has special reference to such machines for the feeding and filling of material, such as cotton or other similar fibrous or downy material, for use in the roll edge of mattresses, such as is shown, described and claimed in an application filed by me on March 2,1915, Serial No. 11,637.
The object of my invention is to form a cheap, simple and efficient machine which can be used for feeding the downy material, such as cotton, into the tubular portions of amattress for forming the roll edge on such mattress, as well as such a machine which will separate and break up such material, and thereby enable such rolled edges to be formed uniformly,- cheaply and quickly and in a better and more workmanlike manner than by the usual method of forming such ed es by hand, as at present practised.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my im roved feeding and filling machine, I will escribe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in

As illustrated in the drawings, my im-' proved feeding and filling machine A is shown, as being supported on a suitable support, such as a floor B of a building,'and' is provided with a picking or separating receptacle or chamber 1, which is mounted horizontally and is substantially circular in shape in cross-section. This receptacle 1 is preferably formed from sheet metal,'such as steel, with the upper and lower halves 2 and 3 respectively, being substantially semicircular, and connected together in any suitable manner. A suitable frame. 4 is connect ed to the lower portion 3 of the receptacle 1 and is provided with legs or end standards 5 for being connected at their lower ends to the floor B or other support to carry such receptacle, such frame extending up along one side of the upper portion 2 of said receptacle, as at 6, to form with an upward extension 3 on the lower half 3 of said receptacle, a chute or feedinghopper 7 between such portions 2 and 6. The hopper 7 has a hinged cover 8 over the same to permit the filling of said hopper with the material, and by reason of the lower receptacle half 3 being curved outwardly in connection with the extension 3' in forming the said hopper, the opening 9 from saidhopper will be restricted in size as compared with the other portion of hopper, thereby enabling the proper amount of material to be fed from the same to said receptacle.
Passing centrally through the receptacle 1 is the horizontal or main shaft 10, which is provided at one end with a pulley 11 for the usual belt connection to a suitable source of power, and around such shaft and within said receptacle is the sleeve or drum 12. This sleeve or drum 12 is rigidly connected to the shaft 10, so as to rotate with the same,
and is secured around the shaft by means of any suitable manner and are in line with rows of like teeth or pins 17 which extend inward from the portions 2 and 3 of the receptacle 1, while between the outer ends of said pins a small space or opening 18 is formed to overcome any liability of the material sticking or clogglng in said receptacle during the beating, breaking up or agitation of such material, by said pins in passing through such receptacle.
Adjacent to the receptacle 1 and preferably connected thereto, is an air circulating fan 19, of any approved construction, which has an intake circulating pipe 20 leadinginto one side of the same from one end of the receptacle 1, and is operated by the usual belt and pulley connection 21 from the vshaft 10. Connected to the upper portion of the fan 19 is the chamber 22, which is provided with inwardly curved sides 23 thereon to form a restricted passage-way 24 through said chamber, and leading from the upper ends of said chamber is the returncirculating pipe 25 for leading to and opening into the opposite ends of the receptacle 1 from the pipe 20.
Extending along one side of the receptacle 1 and supported in the standard 26, extending up from the floor, are the two horizontal filling mandrels or tubes 27 which are in a parallel line with each other and open into the passageway 24 at one end, while their opposite or outer ends open into the roll edge of the mattress when the tubular portions on the mattress are placed over the same, as hereinafter described.
A stand of three pipes 28, 29 and 30 extend from or through the floor above the filling tubes 27, where the pipes 28 and 29 are connected together, as-at 31, and are provided wih suitable valves 32, and thence such pipes lead into the passageway 24 and opposite said tubes. The pipes 28 and 29 are also provided with a nozzle 28' which opens said passageway to increase the velocity of the air from said pipes into said tubes, and thus also acting as a means of forcing the material into such tubes in passing up the said chamber. The pipe 30 leads from a suitable air supply into the connection 31 between the pipes 28 and 29, and is provided with a valve 33 in line with the valves 32. On one of the curved sides 23 of the chamber 22 is a chamber 34, within which is'mounted the shaft 35 carrying the beater rods 36, and such rods are adapted to travel within the passageway 24 to beat any unpicked material therein tending to clog the tubes 27 in order to enable the picked material to pass into such tubes, as hereinafter described. The beater rods 36 are operated by means of a suitable pulley and belt connection 37 between the shafts 10 and 35.
The use and operation of my improved feeding and filling machine A is as follows: The shaft 10 being rotated by the pulley 11 and the material within the hopper passing down through the opening 9, will be caught by the rods 16 and 17 and reduce it to a finely divided state, after which it is carried The material comprising such tubular portions for such roll. edges 6 of the mattress a is then pushed along such tubes 27 until the ends of such tubes reach a point diagonally opposite the open point in such portions, whereupon, with the valves 32 and 33 opened, the air will enter the pipes 28 and 29 from the pipe 30' and pass through such pipes 28 and 29 and thence into the passa eway 24, where it will meet the material ed from the receptacle 1 through the intake pipe 20, fan 19 and chamber 22, and force a portion of said material into said tubes. The air from the fan 19 and the balance of said material will pass up through the passage-way 24 and through the pipe 25 into the receptacle 1 where it will commingle with the other finely divided material therein and pass up through the pipe 20, as hereinbefore described. As fast as the roll edges 25' on the mattress a are thus filled with the material through the tubes 27, such filled edges pass along such tubes until the edge along one end and one side of such edges are filled, so that such edges can be removed from such tubes, after which the outer ends of such tubes are again placed at the open point 0 in the roll edges of the mattress and the other ends and'sides of the same filled in like manner around to the edges at the point d diagonally opposite the open point, such as previously filled, and as hereinafter described.
It will be evident that the machine can be used for handling other material, while as to be formed into finely divided or sepa- 1'30 rated particles, which can be easily blown and circulated through the machine to the article to be filled or place of storage for the same.

It will further be seen that my improved feeding and filling machine when used in connection with the roll edges of a mattress, such edges will be more thoroughly filled or compacted with the filling material,
' and such edges will be more thoroughly completed with such finely divided material than in the ordinary hand process of forming such edges, while the roll edges so formed will enable such portion of the mattress to be more finished than by hand filling and will enable a person handling the mattress to obtain a better and firmer grip on the roll edge. The machine is formed of few and simple parts, that are not liable to get out of order, is capable of easy and ready operation, and practical experience with the same has demonstrated a great saving in labor and material in forming such roll edges.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A machine for feeding and filling devices or members with fibrous material, comprising a receptacle for the material, means within said receptacle for separating the material into a finely divided state, filling tubes for connecting with said members, a circulating fan, intake. and return pipes connected to said receptacle and fan for circulating said separated material through the same,
and means for forcing said separated material into said tubes while in circulation. 1

5. A machine for feeding and filling devices or members with fibrous material, comprising a receptacle for the material, means Within said receptacle for separating the material into afinely divided state, a circulatarated material into said tubes while in circulation.
6. A machine for feeding and filling devices or members with fibrous material, comprising a receptacle for the material, means within said receptacle for separating said material into a finely divided state, filling tubes for connecting with said members, means connected to said receptacle for circulating said material through the same, means for forcing said separated material into said tubes while in circulation, and means for preventing the clogging of the entrance" to said tubes with said material.
7. A machine for feeding and filling devices or members with fibrous material, comprising a receptacle for the material, means within said receptacle for separating said 7 material into a finely divided state, a circulating fan, intake and return pipes connected to said receptacle and fan for circulating the material through the same, a contracted portion in said return pipe, tubes connected to said portion and opening into said members for filling said members, air pipes connected to said contracted portion for forcing said separated material into said tubes-while-in circulation, and means within said contracted portion for preventing the clogging of the entrance to said tubes with said material.
9. A machine for feeding and'filling devices or members with fibrous material, com prising a receptacle for the material, means within said receptacle for separating said material into a finely divided state, a circulating fan, intake, and return pipes connected to said receptacle and fan for circulating the material through the same, a contracted portion in said return pipe, tubes connected to said portion and opening into said members for filling said members, air pipes connected to said contracted portion, nozzles on the ends of said pipes and 'open ing into said, contracted portion opposite said tubes for forcing said separated material into said tubes while in circulation, and means between said tubes and nozzles for preventing the clo ging of the entrance to said tubes with sai material.
10. A machine for feeding and filling devices or members with fibrous material, comprising a receptacle for the material, means within said receptacle for separating said material into a finely divided state, a circulating fan, intake and return pipes connected to said receptacle and fan for circulating the material through the same, a contracted portion in said return pipe, tubes connected to said portion and opening into said members for filling said members, air pipes connected to said contracted portion, nozzles on the ends of said pipes and opening into said contracted portion opposite said tubes for forcing said separated mate rial into said tubes while in circulation, and beater means between said tubes and nozzles for preventing the clogging of said tubes with said material.
11. A machine for feeding and filling devices or members with fibrous material, comprising a receptacle for the material, means within said receptacle for separating said material into a finely divided state, a circulating fan, intake and return pipes connected to said receptacle and fan for circulating the material through the same, a contracted portion in said return pipe, tubes connected to said portion and opening into said members for filling said members, air pipes connected to said contracted portion, nozzles on the ends of said pipes and open ing into said contracted portion opposite said tubes for forcing said separated material into said tubes while in circulation, and heater rods adapted to move within said contracted portion and between said tubes and nozzles for preventing the clogging of the entrance to said tubes with said material.
