Be it'known that I, Louis J. KRrvoHLANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mason City, in the county of Cerro Grordo4 and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Torpedoes, of which the following is ay specification.
rl`his invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in torpedo construction.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a torpedo wherein the magazine may be Vex'ploded 'upon the head of the torpedo striking the target and' wherein the shell of the torpedo will be braced against collapsing when the head end of the torpedo strikes the obj ect, thereby enabling the powder in the magazine to exert its full pressure to explode the shell.
It is also my purpose to provide a torpedo which may be disoharged from the tube under the full air pressure, which will travel at great speed toward the target or obj ect to be struck and wherein the fulminating cap and magazine will remain intact until the torpedo strikes the object head-on, thereby preventing premature exploding of the torpedo.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a shell which is preferably cylindrical in cross section and threaded into one end of the Shell and suitably secured thereto is a. base 2 projecting beyond the end of the shell and having' the outer cylindrical wall thereof flush with the outer wall of the shell and formed With annular grooves spaced apart to receive packing rings 3 adapted to fit against the wall of the air tube during the disoharge of the torpedo so as to prevent leaking of air past the torpedo and enable the full pressureofthe air to act on the torpedo so that the la'tter will be expelled -from the tube at great speed. Secured: to the remaining end of the shell l is a cone-shaped head 4. Arranged. within the shell l is a magazine 5 containing a high explosive and .the ends of the magazine 5 are preferably rounded. The end of the base 2 confronting therounded end of the magazine is convexed as at 6 and within this convexed end of the base, the rounded end-of the magazine isfseated; Interposed between the head 4 and the adjacent end of the magazine 5 is a filler 7 of lead or other suitable material conforming to the shape of the head and the end of the magazine so as to hold the magazine against movement within the shell. Secured to the end of the magazine within the head is a priming cap 8, while formed in the filler 7 and the apex of the head are coaXial bores. Passed through these bores is an impact rod 9 having the inner end abutting the cap 8 and the outer end projecting beyond the apex of the head and secured to the outer end of the impact rod is a spider 10 adapted to strike the target or object in the path of the torpedo. Passed through the impact rod 9 is a cross pin 11 having the ends thereof embedded in the filler 7 and this pin 11 acts to hold the rocl 9 against accidental inward movement and when the outer end of the rod and the spider 10 thereon strike against a vessel or other target, the rod 9 is forced inwardly and the pin 11 broken so as to release the rod and the inner end of the rod explodes the priming cap 8 and the heat and sparks from the priming cap ignite the powder in the magazine 5 with the effect to explode the torpedo and so damage the vessel or other target.
In order to reinforce the shell so as to prevent the colla'psing` thereo-f when the head end of the torpedo strikes the target, I employ a longitudinal bar 12 arranged oentrally of the magazine and having one end seated against the concaved end of the base 2 and the other end terminating short of the head end of the magazine and provided with outwardly diverging arms 13 projecting through the head end of the magazine and embedded in the filler 7. The end of the rod 12 adjacent to the base 2 is formed With a bore 14 and threaded through the base 12 and into the bore 14 is a holding Screw 15. The arms 13, the bar 12 and the Screw lf coperate With one another to reinforce the Shell 1 So as to prevent collapsino' of the Shell When the head Strikes the taget. ThuS, the possibility of premature explosion is avoided and the powder in the Vpre'c'ise details of construction herein de- Scribed and delineated, aS modification and Variation may be made Within the Scope of the claim and Without departing from the Spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A torpeclo comprising a Shell, a magazine within Said Shell, a Cap for exploding the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by afires sing the contents of Said magazine, an impact rod having one end bearing against Said Cap and the other end projecting through Said Shell, a filler Surrounding that portion of the rod Within the Shell, a bar extendng longitudinally of the magazine, a connection between one end of Said bar and the butt end of the Shell, and legS integral With the other end of the bar and diverging out- Wardly from each other and having the onter ends thereof embedded in Said filler and acting to reinforce the Shell to prevent the eollapsing thereof. i i
