To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. I-Iocc, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Danville, in the county of Pittsyl- Vania and State of Virginia, have made an Improvement in Automatic Damper-Regulators, of which the following is a specilication.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved means for regulating the draft in the flue or chimney of a steam generating plant according to the boiler pressure whichA it is desired to maintain. v
My invention is an improvement in that class of hydraulic damper regulators which are controlled by the variation of the boiler pressure, the power for opening or closing the damper being the water pressure derived from the street main or the boiler itself. |The purpose of the invention is thus to increase the sensitiveness of the damper regulator proper with which it may be used, so that the regulator acts more quickly and controls the steam pressure with less. variation than was formerly practicable.
My invention is in the nature of an auX- iliary attachment which co-acts with the A weighted lever of a water regulator proper to effect the speedy regulation desired.
In the accompanying drawing, the improvement is shown applied to the well! known Mason damper regulator, but it is to be understood that it may be used with other types or forms of regulators.

In Figs. l and 2, a steam pipe t is, in practice, connected with a boiler (not shown) and steam pressure, acts to raise a iiexible diaphragm 7), whose central pin bears upward against a leverc that is fulcrumed at Z and provided with a sliding weight c and a heavy suspended weight A. vertical water cylinder g is provided with a slidable piston (not shown) having a rod t It whose head is connected with a chain i shown), the latter being located in the flue or chimney' of a steam plant. Alongside said cylinderg isa smaller one j, whose piston, termed a pilot valve,v controls admission of water to, and exhaust from, the cylinder g. The'slidablerod 47c of this cylinder is pivoted to a small lever l, having its fulcrum on the large cylinder g, and a relatively long rod and yoke m connects this lever lwith the main weighted lever c. Then the weights on lever c are. adjusted to a given pressure,y variations in this pressure cause a movement of lever c and by means of the rod and yoke fm move the pilot valve piston rod 7c, which admits water pressure to one end of the operating cylinder g and at the same time allowing eX- haust from the opposite end. As the piston rod L moves either up or down by the action of the water in the cylinder g, the damper, located in the chimney, is either closed or opened, thus controlling the draft to the boilers.
^ My invention is applicable at this junc- Y ture. The aforesaid weight l is hollow; that is to say, constructedv as a bucket, which ,is to be Iilled with shot or somel other heavy substance to whatever' amount. is required for successful balancing of weighted arm of the damper regulator.
The weighted bucket l is so hung by the chain 3 that, as the main weight arm c is raised or lowered by the increasing or decreasing steam pressure, it is alternately applied to and lifted from thewveight arm 0 by reason of the con-jointV action of the piston rod 7L and lever Z'of the auxiliary attachment. Thus, the practical result is that the stroke of the piston in the cylinder g is shortened, and hence the damper is controlled within narrower limits and with a consequent better regulation of the draft than is possible without my invention. In fact, by my automatic attachment, while the stroke made by the piston of a Mason regulato-r is ordinarily from five to seven inches, by the aid of my invention, it ,is reduced to about one inch during normal conditions.
The steam pressure of a large boiler plant, operating at 175 pounds pressure, is being Controlled by my invention, Within less than one pound variation, and blowing fans that formerly alternated from 100 revolutions per minute to 200 revolutions per minute, are now operating With less than 2() revolu tions per minute variation.

The Combination with an automatic hydraulic damper-regulator for steam plants,
Copiers of this patent may be obtained for the same having a Weighted lever operated by steam pressure, of an auxiliary attaol1- ment Comprising a pivoted lever operatively connected at one end with the piston rod of the Water regulator, and having suspended from its other end a Weight which is hung in line with the said Weighted lever, so that when the latter is raised by steam pressure the auxiliary Weight is added to the normal Weight of the main lever.
