COMBINED FLASH-LIGHT AND TOILET ARTTCLE.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1917.
Application filed August 18, 1916. Serial No. 115,323.
To all lwhom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, ADoLrH Fawn, a citizen of the United States, residing at High- Wood, in the county of Chouteau and State of Montana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Flash-Lights and Toilet Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to flash lights, and
its primary object is to combine with the casing a mirror so that the device becomes a toilet article, and provide means whereby the rays of light from the lamp may be thrown on the face of the user at a time when he looks in the mirror or may be thrown in other directions at will. The simplest way of accomplishing this object would be to have the user move his face from in front of the mirror, another way would be to move the mirror without moving the light, and still another way would be to control the direction in which the beam of light may be flashed from the lamp or bulb. My invention contemplates constructions whereby the primary object may be carried in all or any of these ways, as explained below.
A secondaryobject, accomplished by the third-named construction just mentioned, is to provide manually operable means for flashing the beam of light from the lamp or bulb in a direction lateral to the casing or longitudinal thereto at will; and this is carried out b v the use of a special ring surrounding the lamp itself and arched over it in the form of a dome, and a rotary cover or shutter mounted on the dome, both elements being provided with holes in their sides and tops adapted to register valternately as the shutter is turned on the dome. Details of this feature are found in the following specification and are illustrated on the first sheet of drawings.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this character in which the mirror is adapted to support the ashlight in convenient positions.
Another object of this invention is to provide a device of this character which contains the desirable features of durability, simplicity and efliciency and furthermore a device which may be manufactured at a nominal cost.
Other objects of the invention Awill appear.
f: invention `comprises a which is preferably of rectangular forma- 'as the specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of my invention.
Fig. 2 isa top plan View of the same. l Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1'.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my box like casing A tion and of ample size to contain a goodsized storage battery B which completely fills it as shown. The casing A is formed at one of its end walls with a ring or dome C provided upon its periphery with a circumferentially extending flange or shoulder 1, which is arranged in spaced relation to the end wall of the casing. Between the shoulder l and the casing, the dome has a neck formed with a rectangular opening Q while the top of the dome is provided with a circular opening 3 off center therein. Screwed into the end of the case within the dome C and engageable with the terminals of the battery B is an electric lamp socket 4 in which is mounted a lamp 5, inclosed within an off-center guard 5', the latter being preferably provided with a magnifying lens 6. The lamp and guard are disposed directly below the opening 3 and adjacent the opening 2 so that the rays of light emanating from the lamp will be directed through both of the openings 2 and 3 simultaneously, thus causing the lamp to cast two beams of light in different directions. v
Mounted upon the dome C is a cover o l shutter generally indicated as at D whlch is of a similar contour as that of the dome but slightly larger, and is mounted for rotating movement. The shutter D has its top provided with an ofi' center circular opening 7 which is adapted to register with the openistration with the opening 3. It will be evident from the foregoing that the openings 7 and 10 are adapted to be alternately brought into registration with the openings 2 and 3 respectively, by rotation of the shutter upoii the dome.
Secured to one side wall of the casing A is a panel having a reflecting surface 11 such as a mirror or the like which is directly below the opening 2 so that the beam of light which is projected through the opening will be directed directly in front of the mirror as will be understood.
Then the device is used as a flash light, the shutter is moved so as to cause the opening 7 to register with the opening 3 whereby the light from the lamp 5 will be projected therethrough. Simultaneously with the movement of the shutter as has just been described, the opening 10 will be moved out of registration with the opening 2 thereby causing all of the light rays emanating from the lamp to be projected through the openings 3 and 7. It will be evident that upon reversing the movement of the shutter D, the opening 7 will move out of registration with the opening 3 while the opening 10 will move into registration with the opening 2 thus causing the light to be projected through the latter'and in front of the mirror 11.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that the lamp 5 may be used as a flash light or may be utilized `to visualize a person so that his image may be refiected within the mirror and therebv producing a convenient means for the operator in arranging his toilet. To control the circuit to the lamp, the casing A may be provided upon one of its edges with a switch button l2 of any suitable construction.- To permit the ready removal and insertion of the battery B into the casing A, the dome C upon the adjacent end of the casing may be removably connected to the casing, although in this instance I have shown no construction to attain this end.
What I claim is 1. In a flash light, the combination with a casing, a source `of light therein, and a lamp carried by the casing and connected with said source; of a ring carried by the casing and inclosing the lamp, and means rotatably mounted around the ring for causing the lamp to project its rays of light upon an object at the end of the casing only, or upon an object at the side of the casing only, at the will of the operator.
2. In a flash light, the combination with casing, and an outwardly facing mirror panel carried by one side wall tl'iereof; of' a source of electricity within the casing, a fixed bulb connected therewith, a ring in closing the bulb and fixed in one end wail of the casing, and means for causing the bulb to project its light beams from the ring upon an object squarely in front of said mirror, or in another direction at will.
3. In a flash light, the combination with a casing, and an outwardly facing mirror panel carried by one side wall thereof; of a source of electricity within the casing, a fixed bulb connected therewith, a ring inclosing the bulb and fixed in one end wall of the casing, the ring having axial and radial openings for the passage of light from the bulb, and means for selectively closing these openings, for the purpose set forth.
4. In a Hash light, the combination with a casing, and an outwardly facing mirror panel carried by one side wall thereof; of a source of electricity within the casing, a fixed bulb connected therewith, a ring on the end wall of the casing inclosing said bulb and opening longitudinally in line with the casing and also laterally toward that side of the casing which carries the mirror, and an element movably mounted on the ring for selectively uncovering either opening and covering the other, for the pur ose set forth.
5. In a Hash light, the combination with a casing containing a battery, a socketcarried on one wall of the casing, and a bulb within the socket connected with said battery; of a ring mounted on said wall around the bulb and containing an opening off-center to the ring but co-axial with the bulb, and a shutter rotatably mounted around the ring and having an off-center opening ada ted to be thrown into register with that o the ring, or out of such register selectively at will.
6. In a iash light, the combination with a casing containing a battery, a socket through one end wall of the casing, and a bulb mounted in said socket and connected with the battery; of a guard on said wall around the bulb, a dome having a reduced neckeccentrically inclosing the guard and an opening in its top off-center thereto and alined with the bulb, and a shutter rotatably mounted over the bulb and having an ofi'- center opening in its top adapted to register with that in the top of the dome, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. ADOLPI-I FREED.
