To all wzom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS M. COLLIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Shawnee, in the county of Pottawatomie and State of Oklahoma, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Incubators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
This invention relates to improvements in incubators,-one object of the invention being to provide an incubator with simple and etlicient means whereby the temperature therein may be maintained uniform without the constant care of an attendant; to provide efficient means to insure proper circulation ofthe heating medium, and to so construct the apparatus that an adequate amount of fresh heated air shall be supplied to the incubator chamber at all times.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure l is a view, in elevation and. partly in section of an, incubator embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view; Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view showing the heater'and its connections with the upper portion of the interior of the incubator casing; Fig. l is a detail view illustrating the regulating devices, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the dampers disposed intermediate of the eX- treme positions to which they'V may be moved.

The inner shell 9 of the heater ineloses, but is spaced from a boiler 13, through which latter, a plurality of tubes 14 pass. These tubes communicate' at their respective ends with a lower chamber l5 and with an upper chamber 1G, the latter having an exit through an opening 17 at the top of the boiler structure. cap 17a may be supported above said opening, by means of suitable posts 17h. A. lateral pipe 18 communicates with the upper portion ofthe boiler and projects into the air pipe so that itV may enter the bodyof the incubator. Viater pipesV 19-194 located within the body l communicate with the latteral pipe 18 (atdiametrically opposite sides of the latter) and these water pipes communicate with similar pipes 20 located nea-r the sides within the bodyy l. The pipes 20 are connected by a pipe 2l and with the center of the latter, one end of a return pipe `22 communicates. The return pipe extends across the body l and passes through but spaced from the air pipe l2 and enters the shell 8 of the heater, where it communicates with the upper end of a vertical tube 23, the lower end of which latter communicates with the lower portion of the boiler.
To facilitate the filling of the boiler, a capped filling tube 24 may be provided on the pipe 1S, and the boiler may be provided with a draining outlet at25.
A suitable burner, such as a'lamp 26, is
sui'iported below the boiler structure above described and is provided with an air drum 27 from which va pipe or nipple 28 projects,` said pipe ornipple communicating with a pipe 29 and the latter communicates, by means of an enlarged end portion 30, with the bottom of the chamber within the main 'body l of the incubator. A chimney 3l for the lamp is mounted removably upon the drum 27 and at lits -upper end receives the lower end of a iiueV 32,-the upper end of which latter communicates with-the lower chamber l5 of the boiler structure. It is apparent that by removably mounting. the chimney 3l upon the lamp drum 27, said chimney'inay be raised to permit access `to thelamp. )From the construction and arrangement of parts aboveidescribed, it will be understood that'air entering through the perforations 11 will flow upwardly throughA the annular chamber 10 and enter the chamber of the main body 1, through the pipe 12,the air being warmed during its passage through the annular chamber, by heat radiated from the boiler. From the chamber of the main incubator body 1, the warm air will pass through the pipe 29 and nipple 23 to the lamp drum 27 and supply necessary air to the lamp to properly support combustion. From the lamp and lamp drum,-the air and products of combustion will pass upwardly through the chimneyI 31, flue 32, chamber 15, the annular space around the boiler, the boiler tubes 14 and chamber' 1G, and will finally be discharged through the opening 1?. rllhe passage of the heated air and products of combustion through the boiler structure serves to supply heat for heating the water in the boiler and the air blowing through the annular chamber between the shells 8MS, and also to induce proper circulation of the incoming fresh air. It is also apparent that there will be a continuous circulation of heated water from the boiler through the heating pipes 19, 20, 21, 22, within the main body of the incubator.
ln order that the proper temperature shall be maintained within the incubator cham ber, the regulating means now to be described may be employed.
A damper 33 is located within the chamber 15 so as to be disposed over the inlet flue and below the tubes of the boiler, whereby the supply of heat from the lamp may be checked in advance of the. boiler. The flue 32 is made with openings 34 and. draft through these openings may be regu lated by means of hinged dampers 35. The main damper 33 is supported by a rod passing upwardly through the central boiler tube and through the top discharge opening 17,-the upper end of said rod being pivotally attached to one end of a lever 37.
A rod 3S depends from the valve or damper 33 and is provided at its lower end with a loop 39 through which arms 40 secured to the upper portions of the hinged dampers 35 pass. With this construction, movement of the mainfdamper 33 will be transmitted to the flue dampers 35 so as to open or close the latter| more or less, according to the damper.
The lever 3T above mentioned, is secured' to a member 41 pivotally supported between its ends by a bracket 42, and said member 41 is provided with a weighted arm 43. rlhe parts 37, 41 and 42 thus constitute a counterbalanced lever for supporting the dampers. A rod 44 is attached at its upper end to that end of the lever member 41 to which the main arm 37 of the counterbalanced lever is connected, and the lower portion of said rod 44 is provided with an direction of movement of the main ing through adjustable stop 45. A bracket 46 is secured within the main incubator' body 1 and supports a thermostat 47. A lever 48 is pivotally supported between its ends on the bracket 46 and one arm of this lever is adapted to cooperate with the thermostat. The other arm of thelever 48 projects outwardly thi-ouali an opening 49 in the wall of the incubator body 1 and engages the rod elf-" lover the stop 45 thereon. From this con struction, it will be seen that when the tcmperature in the incubator rises above a dcgrrc predetermined by the adjustment oi'; the thermostat, upward movement will bc imparted by the thermostat to the inner arm of the lever 4S, thus causing the outer arm of said lever to pull downwardly on the rod 44 and so more the long arm of lever 3l as to cause the main damper 33 to descend and check the passage of products of coinbustion through the boiler tubes, and at the same time open the flue dampers 37 to per mit the escape of' the products of combustion, thus causing the temperature of the water and air to be reduced and correspondingly reducing the temperature within the incubator body 1.
Various changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence l do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. rlhe combination with an incubator body, water circulating pipes therein, an external boiler` communicating with said pipes, a. casing inclosing said boiler and providing a chamber below the boiler and also a chamber above the boiler open to the atmosphere, and a heater for the boiler, of a flue connecting the lower chamber with the heater, a damper in said lower chamber for the upper end of said flue, lateral dampers for the flue, and operating means carrying the 'first mentioned damper and connected with the lateral dampers, whereby when the first-mentioned damper moves toward closed position, the lateral dampers will move toward open position, and vice versa.
2. The combination with an incubator body, water circulating pipes therein, a boiler communicating with said pipes, and a heater for the boiler, of a flue between the heater and the boiler, said tlue 'having lai;- eral openings, a damper between the :liuc and boiler, hinged dampers for said lateral liuc openings, a rod mentioned damper and having a loop, arms projecting from the flue dampers and pass said loop and means connected with the first-mentioned damper for operating all of said dampers simultaneously',

3. The combination With an incubator body, Water circulating pipes therein, a boiler communica-ting With said pipes, and a heater for the boiler, of a flue between the heater and the boiler and having lateral openings, a damper for said liue located between said liuc and the boiler, lateral hinged dampers for said flue located between the first-mentioned damper and the,heater for opening and closing said lateralV openings, means connecting` the first-mentioned damper with the lateral dampers, whereby the latter will be opened when the firstmentioned damper moves toward closed position, and means connected With said firstmentioned damper for automatically operating all of said dampers simultaneously.
