Description
* 0. c. WHITIEN. SEAT BOARD FOR VEHICLES.
APPLICATION FILE'D FEB- 5. 916.
1,216,755. Patented Feb. 20,1917. v
. awvahtoz OLWmTTEN To all'whomz't may concern: .Be it known that I, OSCAR; O. l/VHITTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Star City, in the county ofLincoln: and
Stateof Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seat:
Boards for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates, to an improved seat board for wagons and other vehicles, and has for its primary object to provide adjustable means for yieldingly supporting the seat board in spaced'relation to the base upon which it is mounted.
The invention has for another. and more particular object to provide a seat board hinged at one of its ends upon a suitable base, and a convoluted leaf spring having a bolt fixed in one end longitudinally adjustable in the base and engaged at its other end with the bottom face of the seat board, the adjustment of said spring toward or from the hinged end of the board varying the nor mal inclination of the board.
It is a further general object to improve and simplify the construction of devices of the above character, whereby the same may be readily applied in practical use and which consists of comparatively few elements of simple form so that the device will not get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view,
my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagon seat board constructed in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention;
ig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a section taken of Fi 1.
Re erring in detail to the drawing, 5 indicates a baseboard which is provided at each on the line 33 end and upon its opposite faces with the bars or cleats 6. Grooves or channels 7 are cut in the opposite ends of the board and said cleats to receive the guide strips 8 on the side walls of the wagon box. 7
The seat board indicated at 9, is hinged at one of its ends, as at 10, to one of the cleats 6 on the base-board 5. Adjacent to this hinged end of the seat board, the'base Specification of Letters Patent: 7 i

5 provided with a longitudinally extending slot 11.
12 designates the convoluted leaf springwhich is interposed between the seat board and baseboard 5 and extends transversely thereof. A. bolt 13 extendsthrough one end of this leaf spring and has anut 14. threaded upon. its lower end forclamping engagement. with the bot-- tom face of the. board .5. Thus, it-will beapparentthat the spring may be adjusted. longitudinally between the board 5 and the seat board 9. The free end of the spring 12- yieldingly supports the seat board in a longitudinally inclined position and, as the spring is adjusted toward the hinged end of the seat board, the inclination of the board will be increased, and when said spring is adjusted inwardly upon the baseboard, the seat board will be lowered with respect to the base board. In this manner, it will be seen that the spring board may be permitted to yield vertically to any desired extent.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, manner of' operation and several advantages of the invention .will be clearly and fully understood. The mounting and arrangement of the board 9 provides a yielding seat orsupport for the driver so that he will suffer no great discomfort when the wheels of the wagon encounter obstacles, or enter ruts or depressions in the road surface.
of the baseboard 5and a pair of the cushion- 9 ing springs also adjustably arranged between said seat boards and the base5 adjacent to the opposite ends of the latter. It will be understood, of course, that this arrangement of two independently supported seat boards is employed for the use of two persons, each of which will occupy one of the boards. The device as a whole is very serviceable and convenient in practical use and, in view of the fact that but very few parts are employed, it is apparent that the device will be very durable in practical use and not liable to get out of order. The invention may also be manufactured at comparatively small cost and readily applied to the ordinary vehicle body.-
While I have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of and through the slot .11)-
the several parts, the device is susceptible of considerable modification therein and I, therefore, re-
as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I desire to claim and secure by Let ters Patent is 1 A seat for vehicles includinga base a seat board proper hinged at one of its ends uponsaid base, and a-leaf spring-interposed between the seat board and the base and longitudinally adjustable with respect thereto. 3
2. Aseat for vehicles includinga base a seat board proper hingedly mounted at one 01": its ends upon sald base, 1 a transversely disposed convoluted leaf spring interposed it is to be understood that he. base t between the seat board and said base, and
Tmeans, .for, adjusti ng, said leaf spring longitudinally upon the base.
3. A seat-iior vehicles including a base a seat board proper hingedly mounted upon l one of its ends, said; base being provided with a longitudinal slot adjacent to the hinged-end-of the seat board, a trans versely disposed convoluted leaf spring arranged between the seat; board and the base, and ai'bo-lt extending through one end of said 1 leaf "spring and"'longitudinally adjustable insaid slots In testimony-whereof I. hereunto aflix' my signature inthe presence of two witnesses.
