Be it known that I, lVALTnn R.'.MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bellville, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riveting- Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates an improved riveting tool and has as its primary object to provide a device of this character which may be easily manipulated and so constructed that the rivet may be readily forced through the work. 7
The invention has as a further object to provide an improved rivet holder for the plunger of the tool of" such character that the rivet will be held in proper alinement relative to the anvil of the tool to enter the work. 7 7
And a still further object of the inven tion is to provide a tool of the above. de-
scribed character wherein the plunger will be normally urged to a'position; to shift and maintain the rivet holder in operative position'relative to the headof the plunger to receivea rivet.

In carrying out my invention I employ a channeled stock 10 which is offset intermediate its ends and is then extended to provide an operating lever or handle 11. The stock is formed with spaced sides12 whic'h are connected at longitudinally spaced points adjacent the upper end of, the stock by transversely extending parallel webs 13 and let respectively. Extending laterally from the upper end of the stock is a substantially U-shaped neck or yoke 15, having its free end terminating in alinement with the webs 13 and 14 and provided-with a screw threaded bore adjustably reoeivingani anvil or'set screw 16 presented toward the said webs. The set screw 16 is provided with a flat inner end and is formed axially with a longitudinally extendingspu'r or nib adapted to engage between the prongs of a vrivet for upsetting the rivet.

The webs13. andllare provided witl registering openings which freely receive a plunger 21 arranged in alinement with the anvil 16. and 'shiftable upon the saidwebs either toward or away from the said anvilto cooperate therewith. At its outer end, the plunger 21 isformed with a cylindrical head 22 having a'fiatxupper face presented toward the anvil. Freely surrounding the head 22 of the plunger is'a substantially cylindrical rivet or fastening holder 23 shown in detail in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This rivet holder is preferably formed of suitable resilient sheet metal and the wall thereof is slit longitudinally at a plurality? of circumferentially spaced points to provide coacting tongues or'fingers- 24. At'its inner end, the rivet holder 23 is provided with a radial flange 25 which connects the tongues 24 at their inner extremities and freely surrounds the plunger 21, the. said flange being adapted to engage the shoulder formed by the inner end of the head 22 of the plunger to limit the rivet holder in its outward shifting movement upon the head. Adjacent its outer extremity,- the wall of the rivet holder is provided with a head which forms an annular shoulder '26 arranged, when the flange 25 is seated against the inner end of ithehead 2.2,"in spaced relation above the upper flat face of the said shoulder 26 the wall of the rivet holder is ward the upper flat face of the head 22 of the plunger.
Extending transversely through the plunger 21 adjacent the inner extremity thereof is a pin 28 and, interposed between the said pin and the web 13 of the stock is a helical spring 29 which surrounds the plunger and is adapted to urge the plunger.

In operating the tool, the handle 18 is first swung outwardly away from the handle 11 to such position that the spring 29 will shift the plunger to engage the flange 25 of the rivet holder with the upper face of the web 13 of the stock. The rivet holder 23 will then be moved to a position vwith the shoulder 26 thereof spaced above the upper flat face ofthe head 22 of the plunger. The head of a rivet is then placed within the cup-shaped terminal 27 of the rivet holder when slight downward pressure upon the rivet will serve to spring the tongues 2t of the rivet holder outwardly so that the head of the rivet vwill move to a position seated against the flat upper face of the head 22 of the plunger with the shoulder 26 of the rivet holder engaged over the head of the rivet and withthe prongs of the rivet directed upwardly toward the anvil 16 in position to pierce the work. The work is, of course, inserted between the rivet and the anvil and the handle 18 may then be operated to properly actuate the plunger and readily force the rivet through the work to engage the anvil which will then act to overturn the rivet, the anvil being adjustable upon the neck 15 to accommodate work of various thicknesses.
Particular attention is now directed to the fact that by providing the rivet holder 23 7 with a cup-shaped terminal, the head of the rivet upon being engaged with the inclined inner faces of the tongues 24 of the rivet holder may be easily seated upon the upper faceof the head 22 of the plunger and when engaged with the shoulder 26 of the rivet holder, the rivet will be held firmly with its cumference so that the rivet cannot shift laterally upon the head of the plunger. WVhen the handle 18 is operated to move the plunger 21 upwardly and engage the rivet with the work, the upper edge of the. rivet holder will contact with the work so that subsequent upward movement of the plunger will act to disengage the rivet holder from the rivet when the rivet holder will drop upon the plunger to seat against the web 13 of the stock. "However, it will be noted that before the rivet holder is thus disengaged from the rivet, the prongs of the rivet will be held embedded in the work so that the presence of the rivet holder about the head of the rivet will not be further required to properly direct the rivet into engagement with the work After the rivet has been properly overturned against the anvil 16 and the handle 18 is again swung outwardly from the handle 11 of the stock, the spring 29 will then shift the plunger away from the anvil and will act to move the head 22 of the plunger into the rivet holder and over the shoulder 26 thereof to normal position within the said holder, the holder being seated against the web 13 and the spring 19 urging the head of the plunger toward the said web. In this position of the rivet holder and plunger, another rivet may then be inserted within the rivet holder 1 rivet holder 23 will, at the proper time, be
automatically disengaged from the rivet and that when the handle 18 is released, the plunger will then again be moved to automatically shift the rivet holder to operative position relative to the head of the plunger to receive another rivet. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described including a stock provided with an anvil, a plunger shiftable upon the stock to cooperate with the anvil, an operating lever for the plunger, and a holder carried by the plunger for movement longitudinally thereon, the said holder being provided with a cylindrical wall split to form a plurality of yieldable gripping tongues adapted to engage a fastening.
2. A device of the character described in cluding a stock provided with an anvil, a plunger shiftable .upon the stock to cooperate with the anvil, an operating lever for the plunger, and a rivet holder normally surrounding one end of the plungerto cooperate therewith and provided with a frusto-conical outer end terminating at its inner extremity in a shoulder projecting in wardly over the said end of the'plunger, the frusto-conical' outer end of the rivet holder being adapted to direct the head of a rivet toward the said end of the plunger to engage beneath the said shoulder.
3. A deviceof the character described including a stock provided with sides, a web connectingthe said sides, an anvil carried by the stock, a plunger shiftable upon the stock to cooperate with the anvil, an operating lever for the plunger swingingly mounted upon the stock, and a longitudinally extending stop lug carried by the inner extremity of said lever and adapted to engage said web for limiting the lever in its outward swinging movement away from the stock with the plunger disposed in spaced relation to the anvil.
4. A device of the character described including a stock .provided with an anvil, a plunger shiftable upon the stock to co6perate with the anvil,'means for shifting the plunger, and a fastening holder carried by the plunger and provided with a laterallydeflected portion at its outer extremity adapted to direct a fastening to seat against the plunger.
5. A device of the character described including a stock provided with an anvil, a plunger shiftabl'e upon the stock to cooperate with the anvil, means for shifting the plunger, and a fastening holder carried by the plungerand provided with a cup shaped outer extremity adapted to direct a fastening to seat against the plunger.
6. A device of the character described including a stock provided with an anvil, a plunger shiftable upon the stock to cooperate with the anvil, means for shifting the plunger, and a fastening holder carried by the plunger and provided with a shoulder with the wall of the holder at its outer extremity sloping toward said shoulder for directing a fastener to engage beneath the I adapted to engage over the head of a fastening seating upon the plunger with the holder acting to hold the fastening tightly against the plunger. v

plunger shiftable upon the stock to cooperate with the anvil, means for shifting the plunger, and a fastening holder carried by the plunger and provided with a shoulder normally adapted to support the holder in operative position upon the plunger and .adapted to engage the head of a fastening with the said fastening seating against the plunger. v

and a fastening holder carried by the plunger and provided with a flange adapted to engage said shoulder for limiting the holder in its movement to active position upon the plunger and having a shoulder formed thereon adapted to engage the plunger for supporting the holder in active position with the shoulder of the holder 1 adapted to engage the head of a fastening seating against the plunger. 1
