Description

w. L. MAST. ATTACHMENT FOR DOOR LATCHES. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 25, $916 1 $1 6,584 Patented Feb 20, 1917.
ill
'WILLIAM L. MAST, 0F ARTHUR, ILLINOIS.
ATTACHMENT FOR DOOR-LATCHES. i
Specification of Letters Iatent.
Application filed March .25, 1916.
motion rather than the twist motion which i must be. given to the (7](lllllll' V door knob when it is desired to open or close the latch of the. door.
The invention Further aims to provide an attachment of this character which will be constructed in a manner that will allow it to he used on anvstandard form of door latch; "t being: only necessary to remove the door knob from the latch and secure it on the end of the crank while the opposite end oi the crank is secured to the operating rod of the latch in a manner similar to the l'astoning ot' the door knob thereoit'.
A. further object of this invention is the provision of an attachment 'tOlZtlUl-l' latches which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction. but durable. and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices oi this cl'iaractcr are ordinarily subjected.
For a .i'ull description of the advantages and merits thereof. re i'erenre is to be had to the 't'ollowiue description and the .nrcompanyin; drawiiugs wherein is illustrated the preferred form oi my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a. fragmentary side elevation of a portion of ment applied to the latch.
Fig. 2 is a. perspective view of the attachment.
One of the. inconveniences found in the ordinary door latch whichis operated by the ordinary door knob is the ditliculty oi turning the knob when a, persons hands are wet or when the person is carrying bundles which make it ditlienlt to turn the. knob ol' the door. means for opening the latch with a crank motion instead of a twist or turning motion this diltieulty can be greatly avoided. The door A is provided with the usual latch B the invention and a. door showing thcattaelr- By providing the latch with a Patented Feb. 2th 191%. Serial n5. 86,643.
which is operated by the operating rod Z) which e. :tends transversely through the door and ordiimril is'operated by a knob on each side of the door. The attachment, which is intended to be mounted upon the operating' rod in. a manner similar tothe incanting at the ort'linarv door knob consists of the straight arms 1 and the angularlv dis .l osed socket end if in which the socket 3 is Formed. the socket beingoi a standard size. as is found in the ends oi. the sockets at door knobs. the socket 3 therefore, plaeed npon the end of the o rerating rod and the fastening screw will he inserted through the. aperture -l screw threadedlv mounted in the threadtn apertures which are i'ound in the ends of all standard latch operating rods. ".lhis' construction, there fore, provides for the securing of the attachment in a manner exactly the same as the door knob is secured when the door knob i enn'iloved.
The door knob C will be mounted upon the angularly disposed socket portion of the attachment which extelnls at right angles from the arm 1. and provided with the squared end 5 through which an aperture (3 extends and is provided with screw threads similar to the. screw tl'irez'xds in the openings in the operating, rod oi the latch. The door knoh therefore. will be attahrd attaclnnent to the operating rod ot the latch. li v reference to Fig. 'l oi the drawing it will be seen that the Full lines indicate the position of the door knoh when the latch is in closed position and when the door is close the d tted lines indicating the posh tion oi the. door knob when the latch is in open position when it is desired to open the door. This motion theretore may be accomplished by simply pressing the door knob to one side and. it the persons hands are wet or should he hampered by other means it will bo'only necessary to place. the arm against the. knob to cause the knob to be pressed downwardly for opening the. door. The attachment is one that may be quickly and rasily applied and it is intended that the socket and squared end will be eonstruetml oi standard sizes whereby it may be employed in connection with the standard size of latches 'nnd door knobs.
From the. foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable attachment for door latches has been provided, the dcto thesquared portion in the exact manner at its.
tails of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however. that! slight changes or modifications in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended. I claim:
' 1. The combination with a door and a latch for the door having an ordinary operating rod, of an operating crank provided with angularly disposed oppositely extending end portions, one of said end portions provided with a square socket for receiving said operating rod and having; a fastener receiving opening formed in its side com n'mnicating with the interior of said socket,
.the opposite end 'portion'of said crank provided with a reduced square "stem of a size equal to the size of the square socket in the first mentioned end portion, and a knob mounted upon. the square stem, the said square stem and said square operating rod being of similar formation whereby said knob may be 1nterchanged from said operatmg rod and mounted upon said stem.
2. The combination with a door and a latch for the door havmg an ordinary square operating: rod. of an operating crank adapted to have its ends interchangeably operating rod, the main portion of said operating crank adapted to be disposed up- \vardl at right angles from said operating rolh the attaching portion of said knob adapted to he received either by the end of said stem or the end of said operating rod.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
