The gage plate 31 may therefore be swung upon the hinge joint described and held in either upright or depressed position by the reaction of the spring tongue. When in elevated position, its upper edge, which may, if desired, be inscribed With a scale, lies at the line of print. The screw bolt 25 is extended well to thefront as seen in Fig. 1, and will contact with the lower part of card holdin finger 5, causing the gage to slide on sha t 16 and soprevent the typebars from striking the gage. The supplemental gage device as a whole is capable of longitudinal movement on shafts 16an 1 14. In the traverse of the platemshould the supplemental gage 31, when down, come in-contact with the card guide finger 5 the gage will slip upon the shaft 16 to the outer end of the platen so that all, or substantially all, of the printing face of the' platen will be available for printing purposes.
A side line gage similar in all respects to that described applied to the-right hand end of the platen, may be applied to the left hand end of the laten, as shown at Fig. 2, with corresponding parts cated. This gage 31, as here shown, 18 moved down when the margin part of a wide sheet is being written on, the center gage t then being used for adjusting the sheet as shown in Fig. 2. At other times be used, or the left hand gage may be used to adjust a wide sheet when writing is being done on 'the right hand portion of the sheet.

Line gage devices for a typewriting machine, comprising a short fixed line gage located at the printing point and a supple mental line gage located adjacent one end of the platen mounted to move with the platen below-the line of print and adjustable in its mounting vertically with reference to the line of print and-horizontally toward and from the end of the platen.
3. Line gage devices for a typewriting machine, comprising a short fixed line gage located at' the printing point and a suppleplaten, a part vertically adjustable relatively -to the line of print, and a third part movable transversely toward and from the platen.
4. The combination of a platen, its carriage, a rod beneath the platen forming part of the carriage frame, a bracket attached to said rod, a vertically adjustable plate mounted on said bracket and a line gage plate hinged to said vertically adjustable plate.
5. The combination of the platen,"its carriage, thepaper feed rolls, a rod beneath the platen in the carriage frame supporting said paper 'feed rolls, a cam shaft for raismg and lowering said rolls, a bracket supmental line gage mounted'beneath the line ported by said rod and having a part on gaging said cam shaft, and a line gage attached to said bracket.
'6. The combination with a platen, its car'- riage, a rod in the carriage beneath the platen, a bracket free to slide on said rod in a line parallel with the axis of the platen and a line gage carried by said bracket and having an upper part mounted to move toward and from the platen.
