Be it known that I, JOSEPHl S. Limoni, a subject of the Czar `o'f,Russia, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventedl certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties andl Rail-Fasteners, specification.
This invention relates to certainnew and useful improvements yinn'neta'llic tie and rail fastener. l
of ',Whichthe following is a The P I'mary objectief the 'invention'is' the provlsion of a tie .formed of metal provided with a cushioning means for the rails and securing means l@for lockinv the-rails thereon.
A further object ofl'the invention is the provision of a metallic lrailway vtie that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture, the same being arranged' with a rail fastener cooperating therewith whereby a; rail may be readily operatively secured thereon. j
With these general objects' in'view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more'l fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed In the drawings forming a part of this application and 1n lwhich like-'designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:- l

The device contemplates a railway tie 10 of channel-iron formation as best illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing open at its top and opposite ends and arranged with spaced transverse partitions 11 adjacent the oppoview of an end 'site ends thereofadapted for the' reception of a wooden or' rother resilient block 12 upon which the rails 13'are adaptedxto be positioned transversely of the r-tie4 10 and secured in position thereon by means'of the locking plates 14.` I .i
A The oppositeends of the tie 10 a.'re similarly formed, being cut-away as at r15 adjacent the sink 16 within which. the block 12 is positioned andadapted to alfordclearancev for the rail '13 duringthe vibrations of the rail when;- mounted upon the block- 12. Mounting posts 17 are provided for the locking plates 14 at opposite sides of thel pairs of partitions 11, the said posts being formed integral with the side walls of the tie and the outer pair of postsbeingpreferably arf ranged in a reinforcing manner atthe open end of the tie. The posts are provided with j angular notches 1 8 at the. tops thereofwith in which the locking plates 14 are readily positioned between the sides of the tie 10, spaced upturnedngers 19 being carried by the plates 14 for overlying the base flanges l20 of therail when positioned upon the block .12 within th sink 16 as best illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. An' anchoring housing 21 is arranged upon the bottom 22 of the tie 10 adjacent the-outer face of each of the partitions 1 1', each of the said housings having a top wall 23 arranged with a -slot 24 adapted for the reception of the shank of a securing bolt 2.5.having the head 26 thereof arranged beneath the top 23 withinthe housing, the opposite walls of the latter preventing the bolt from being turned. The bolts 25 project upwardly through perforations 27 inthe locking plates 14, lock nuts 28 being arranged upon the upper'ends of the said bolts having locking lugs 29 adapted to engage coperating grooves 30 in the locking plates 14. From -this detailed description of the device it will be at once apparent that the rails 13 are secured transversely of the tie l() by mounting the said `lr-ails upon the blocks 12, the latter being po -sitioned within the sink 16. The locking plates 14 arethen readily arranged in place and the bolts 25 positioned through the housings 21 and plate perforations 27 the lock nuts 28 being 'suitably tightened for main taining the entire structure-in its assembled position. It is preferable to form the locking plates 14 of slightly resilient metal to allow the said plates to be adjustably tensioned upon the rail anges `20 by means of the lock nuts 28, it being understood vthat the resilient blocks 12 cushion the rails 13 under the varying strains and conditions and that while the present embodiment of the device is believed to be preferable, minor changes may be made therein ,without departing from the scope of the appended claims. 1 What I claim as new is-:-.V 1. 2. .A device of the class described compris--r ing a tie of channel shape, transiv'erse spaced partitions arranged between the sides thereo`f forming sinks therebetween,y resilient rail# cushioning blocks arranged within the said sinks, the opposite sides of thesaid tie having cut-away portions extending beneath the upper faces of the said blocks, posts integrally formed with the opposite sides of thesaid Atie at opposite sides ofthe said pairs of partitions arranged with notches in their upper ends, rail-engaging plates seated within the said notches and having fingers overllying the said partitions and blocks whenv operatively arranged, anchoring housings arranged adjacent the said partitions, andy 4versel-y ofthe saidtie within the said cut- V. away portions, resilient locking plates upon [the sald tie having spaced lingers overlying the base flanges of the said rails, housings carried by the bottom of .the said tie be- 'neath the said plates, locking boltsl non- -rotatably arranged upright in theA said housings projecting through the said plates, and tensioned lock nuts upon the said bolts above the said plates.
