To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, FRANK A. RYTHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Grain-Binders, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to grain binders.
Its object is to provide an improved form of clutch tripping and compressor mechanism therefor. A further object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient construction for the purpose indicated, whereby all difficulty withrepeating of the binding mechanismis efiectually overcome.
One embodiment of the invention is shown for purposes of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which-e Figure 1 is a front end elevation of a grain binder having my invention embodied in its construction.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modified form of part of the details of construction illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of parts of Fig. 1 as seen in the direction of arrowa.
Fig. 4 is a cross section of a part of Fig. 3 along the line 6-6.
In the construction illustrated, lrepresents an end member ofa common formof U-shaped binder frame having a lower tubular member 2, in which is journaled the needle shaft 3 and an upper tubular memher (not shown), in which is journaled the knotter shaft 4: having the cam wheel 5 secured to its front end, 6 the packer shaft journaled in bearings carried-by the lower part of the frame, 7 a clutch member secured to the packer shaft and adapted to intermittently engage with the clutch pawl 8 carried by a shaft 9 on a pinion which is journaled upon the packer shaft and meshing with a pinion 10 secured to the lower end of a shaft journaled in the end member 1 of the frame and having a pinion ll'secured to its opposite end and meshing with the cam wheel 5. 12 represents a crank arm integral with one end of the needle shaft and having the needle 13 secured to its opposite end, and 14 a pitman connecting the crank arm with the cam wheel, 15 a lever pivoted intermediate its ends upon the binder frame having a roller 16 journaled on one end thereof and adapted to engage with the cam track 17 on the cam wheel 5,-

My improved form of clutch tripping and compressor mechanism includes an eccentric collar 24: that receives the needle shaft 3 adjacent the crank arm 12 and having laterally extending lugs 25 integral therewith that engage with opposite sidesof the crank arm whereby the collar is rocked with the shaft. Journaled upon the eccentric collar is a clutch tripping arm 26 provided with a short sleeve member 27 on its free end that slidably receives one end of a clutch pawl engaging member having a downwardly turned head 28, the opposite end of said member being slidably received by an opening in an ear member 29 integral with the arm 26, and 30 represents a buffer spring encircling the body of the pawl engaging member and operative between the ear and a pressure controlling nut 31 in a manner to cushion the force of engagement of the clutch pawl 8 with the head 28. 32 represents a laterally extending lug on the side of the arm 26 that is adapted to engage with a fixed lug 33 on the binder frame in a manner to limit a turning movement of the arm in a direction to engage the pawl 8. The arm 26 is provided with a depending arm 34 below its axis whereby it is flexibly connected with the lower end of a yoke member 35, which is provided at its upper end with an adjusting sleeve 36 threaded in the end wall of the yoke and slidably receiving the bodyof the link 18. Secured to the body of the link 18, and adjacent the upper end wall of the yoke, is a rocking collar 37 having notches in its side walls whereby it slidably engages the side walls of the yoke and against which bears one end of a compression spring 38 encircling the link 18 and having its opposite end received by a cup-shaped. collar 39 secured to the lower end of the link 18 and 1 22, and a journal bearing 43 for the shaft 19 upon the frame adjacent the crank arm is correspondingly elongated, permitting a free operation of the associated parts of the mechanism when performing their function of clutch tripping and bundle compressing.
A modified form of yoke connecting the arm 34 with the lever 15, illustrated in Fig.
2, includes a link 44 having its upper end pivotally connected with the lever 15 and its lower part threaded to receive upper and lower adjusting nuts 45 and 46, respectively,
spaced apart upon the link longitudinally,
the body of the link between the nuts being slidably received by an ear member 47 integral with a sleeve 48 secured to a companion parallel link 49 having its upper end adjustably secured, by means of nuts 50, to an I ear 51 integral with a sleeve 52 slidable longitudinally upon the link 44, and 53 represents a compression spring encircling the body of said link and operative between the sleeve 52 and the nut in the same manner as the spring 38. The lower end of the link 49 is provided with an opening that receives the crank arm 22 of the shaft 19, and 54 represents a link flexibly connecting the crank arm with the arm 34 of the clutch tripping arm 26.
In operation, with the mechanism in the position shown in Fig. 1, the grain is packed against the arm 21 and after increase of pressureit is gradually drawn outward, rocking the shaft 19 in its bearings and drawing down upon the yoke 35 against the force of the spring 38, which is regulated by means of the threaded sleeve 36, and, through the pivotal connection of the lower end of the yoke with the arm 34, rocking the clutch tripping arm 26 upon the eccentrio collar 24 until its free end is moved suflicient to carry the head 28 out of engagement with the nose of the clutch pawl 8, which immediately engages with the clutch member 7 secured to the constantly rotatable packer shaft 6, whereby motion is imparted to the cam wheel 5 and, through its pitman "c onnectlon wlth the crank arm 12, it rocks the needle shaft 3 in its bearings, turnmg the eccentric collar 24 in a direction to carry the arm 26 away from the clutch pawl and retaining it in a disengaged position until the binding mechanism has completed lts cycle of movement and the needle returns to its initial position, the arm 26 cartying the head 28 back to its position of The arm 26 turns about the axis of the needle shaft upon the eccentric collar 24 during its clutch tripping movement and the collar, in turning below the needle shaft, moves it bodily upward and toward the clutch pawl, swinging the yoke 35 toward the axis of the needle shaft, the elongated opening 42 in the arm 41 or the flexible connection, by
means of the link 54., permitting a free movement of the associated parts of the mechanism.
Having shown and described an embodiment of my invention, I do not desire to have it limited to the specific details of the structure as illustrated, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and organization of its various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as indicated in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A grain binder including, in combination, a power transmission gear mechanism including a clutch, a needle shaft, a clutch tripping arm, and automatically operative means for movin said arm axially and bodily toward or from said clutch.
2. In a grain binder, power transmission gear mechanism including a clutch, a needle shaft. a clutch tripping arm journaled on said shaft, means on said shaft for controlling the movement of said arm, a compressor trip shaft, and an operative connection between said shaft and trip.
3. In a grain binder, power transmission gear mechanism including a clutch, a needle shaft, a cam rotatable therewith, a clutch controlling member carried on said shaft and engageable with said cam, a compressor trip shaft a crank on said controlling member, and a pivotal connection between said crank and said trip.
4. A grain binder including, in combination, a power transmission gear mechanism including a clutch, a rocking needle shaft, means operatively connecting said needle shaft with said power transmission gear mechanism, an eccentric collar secured to said needle shaft, and a clutch tripping arm journaled on said eccentric collar whereby said arm is moved axially and bodily toward or from said clutch when said needle shaft is rocked.
5. A grain binder including, in combination, a binder frame, a power transmission gear mechanism, a rocking needle shaft journaled on said frame and operati\ *ely connected with. said power transmission gear mechanism, an eccentric collar secured to said needle shaft, a clutch mechanism forming part of said power transmission gear mechanism and including a clutch pawl, and a pawl engaging arm journaled upon said eccentric collar whereby said arm is moved axially and bodily toward or from said pawl when sald needle shaft 1s rocked, said arm engaging with a fixed part of said frame in a manner limiting an axial movement there of in one direction.
6. A grain binder including, in combination, a binder frame, a power transmission gear mechanism including a clutch mechanism, said clutch mechanism including a clutch pawl, a rocking needle shaft j ournaled on said frame and operatively connected with said power transmission gear mechanism, clutch tripping mechanism including a rock shaft journaled on said frame and provided with a grain resisting element at one end and a crank arm at its opposite end, means permitting said crank arm to move bodily toward the axis of said needle shaft, a cam controlled lever pivoted upon said frame, a vertically disposed longitudinally yielding yoke having its upper end pivotally connect ed with said lever and its opposite end provided with an elongated opening receiving said crank arm, an eccentric collar secured to said needle shaft, and a pawl engaging arm journaled upon said collar and provided with an arm having a pivotal connection with the lower end of said yoke.
