Be it knownthat I, JOHN F. CAWL, a citizen of the United States of America, county of Erie, and have invented certain new rand useful Improvements in Slidingwhich the following is a.fullclear, and exact description. My invention relates generally to sliding doorsl and more particularly to freight car doors and locking means therefor.
It is Well known, to' those skilled in the art, that freight car doors which are hung on the outside of the car often become derailed or otherwise dislocated, and' frey quently are torn from the car by passing vtrains. Furthermore,
with the present construction of doors there is no way of effectively locking the same.
, One of the objects of my invention has l. been, tol provide a sliding door for' freight `itfimpossible for the door cars which shall be mounted to operate'4 within the ,casing ofthe car, thereby making to be accidentally dislocated or detached.
,Another object has been to provide a novel and' effective locking means for the door, which cannot be operated by any un- Y authorized persons.
Furthermore, I have sought 'to provide a lock for my door, which, when set in fits YI'AL'- open position, shall remain so set until the door 1s partly open, and be re-set by further movement of the door.

This arm is/ 4plovidedfwith a detent 60 w slots 52 of the said lock member, the key is pushed inwardly so as to move the lock stud 39 axially and release the stud key 41 from its engaging slot 52 (Fig. 6). This releases the lock member 30 which may then be rotated by the operating key. When the lock member is rotated to theposition shown in Fig. 3 the lock arms 26 and 27 will have their outer ends released from the notches 25 of the door and at this time the detent 60 will engage with the slot 61 of the lock member and thus prevent the return of the loek member to its normal position. `When this detent is in the position shown in Fig. 2 the trip arm 58 will be slightly raised and the outer end of the trip. lever 56 will be lowered so as to be inthe path of travel of `the trip block 54. The door may now be be moved, by the helical spring 53, to their normal positions (see Fig. l) whereby the lock levers will be reset and i osition to again engage with the notches 25' of the door when it'is closed.
Obviously, some modifications of the details herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims, and I do not,.therefore, wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1.
