Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented heh. 20", 1917.
Application filed February 12, 1915. Serial No. 7,792.
1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALLACE W. CASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheels and more particularly to spring wheels for vehicles. The principal object of the invention is to improve upon the type of wheel disclosed in my cr')- )encling application Serial No. 822,441, filed March 1, 1914. In this application one of the objects was to provide a wheel constructed of a plurality of arcuate folly and rim sections so connected that they had relative movement one with the other for the purpose of insuring proper flexibility and resiliency to take up road shocks. It is now an object of this invention, as before stated, to improve upon the structure shown in the above mentioned application by producing a more eli'ective joint between the sections which not only prevents lateral movement between the sections but which facilitates their relative radial movements and obviates noise.
Further objects ofthe invention will appear as the following specific description isread in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of the wheel showing an improved type of felly.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the felly sections with the rim section removed.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1, 2 and 3 indicate generally the hub, spokes and felly respectively, and 4 indicates the rim in which the tire 5 is seated. The hub 1 is made in any preferred manner and is arranged so as to clamp the spokes 2 thereto, these spokes consisting of substantially S-shaped resilient strips of metal which connect with the folly 3 by means of the bolts 6.
The felly 3 is constructed, as shown, of a plurality of arcuate sections, each section having at opposite terminals inwardly and radially extending lugs 7 and 8, the former projected oircumferentially and has its face formed on the arc of a circle, as shown at 9, while the latter lug 8 is re cessed or concaved so as to receive the projected face of a lug 7. The lug 8 is provided with a longitudinal slot 10 which receives a set screw 11 carried by the lug 7 of the adjoining section. This slot is extended throughout the length of the lug 7 So as to give free movement of the adjoining section, but it will be seen that as the set screw enters the slot and travels therein in all relative radial movements of the sections any relative lateral movement of the sections is prevented.
The rim is also constructed of a plurality of sections, each of which has a length coextensive with the felly section to which it is attached by means of the bolts 6 but is slightly loeveled'at its ends, as indicated at 12, so as to permit radial movement of the sections without separating the lugs 7 and 8 of adjoining sections and permitting them of which is to rock readily upon each other in the mannor of a hinge. Each rim section is, of
course, suitably formed to provide a circumferential groove when the sections are joined together for the reception of the tire 5.
l/Vhat is claimed is A wheel comprising a felly constructed of a plurality of sections, radially extend ing lugs on opposite ends of said sections and circumferentially projected, certain of said lugs having a concaved confronting face provided with a centrally located elongated slot, the other of said lugs having their confronting faces formed on the arc of a circle and adapted to enter and contact with the concaved faces of the former mentioned lugs, a screw carried by the latter mentioned lugs and extending through the slot of the other of said lugs and adapted to travel therein in all relative radial movements of the sections, and further preventing any relative lateral movements of the sections, a hub, and spring spokes connecting the hub and felly sections.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
