Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,620, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit linown that l, EDWIN HOLMES, of Brooklyn, in the county ot Kings and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric indicating Elevators, and I do hereby declare that the tollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this speciiication.

This invention relates to a novel combination ot' an elevator in hotels and other buildings with stationary electrical alniaratus, with the object or causing the production ot' visible and audible signals within the elevator by electrical impulses given by the closing ot' circuits on the several loors. 3y electrical means the persons controllingl the elevator can thus be conveniently informed on which tloor the elevator may be wanted. 'lhe invention consists in combining the movable elevator, which contains a suitable indicating instrument with a tlexible or movable series or' conductors leading' to the several tloors, and thence to the operating battery. As the elevator moves up or down the liexible or movable coinluctors retain the metallic connection between the parts otthe indicator and the stationary cominci-ors that extend troni the battery.

These wires are continued separately and properly insulated in a rope, l), which eX- tends from the elevator up or down as may be found preferable, to a fixed part ofthe building, where its constituent wires are again separately connected with wires b bl b2 o, Sac., that lead respectively to the switches on the several ioors, and thence to the battery, one, b4, leading direct to thc battery E. Continuous n'letallic connection is thus obtained between the wires c al a2, 85o., and the wires I) b1 b2, &c., respectively, so that in whatever position the elevator may be when a circuit is closed by the switch or knob on any one floor the corresponding pointer will be moved on the indicator or other visible or audible notice given that the elevator is wanted on such a iioor. During the up-anddown motions of the elevator the ilexible conductors in the rope D yield to the changes of positions. ln place ol" the rope D the wires c al a? a3, etc., may lead to springs, ears, or rollers c c1 c2 c3, etc., respectively, that project from the elevator and are in respective contact with metallic rods d ell l2 d3, die., that are arranged along the course of the elevator, the wires b b1 b2 b3, dic., extending from the ends ot' these rods, substantially as indicated in Fig. 2.
Other modifications in the arrangement of the tlexible or movable conductors may be substituted for those hercinbctbre named, and I do not coniine myselt' to their or any special arrangement thereof.
Having Ythus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination of an elevator, which contains an indicator, C, with a series or' flexible or movable metallic conductors, which connect the wires u a a? a3, &c., on the elevator with the wires i) bl b2 b3, &c., in the building.
