The invention is applicable to any ordinary box car 10 having a door opening, or openings, 11, and equipped with any ordinary car door 12, here shown as provided with hangers 13 traveling on a top rail 14: and with rollers 15 at the bottom traveling on a rail 16,

The arrangement is such that the rollers 29 will be arrested when the hinges 19 are below the throats 28 and thereby permitting the doors to swing outwardly. At the same time, the doors are retained in the guide-ways and prevented from running downwardly through the throats 28.
Below the guides 23, I provide displaceable retainers 30 for the lower door sections, these being in the form of plates, which are displaceable in their own planes in slots or openings formed in the car at the door opening, the said retainers being illustrated as moving between the studding 31 and the facing 32 in Fig. 5. The plates 30 are provided with transverse slots 33, through which pins or bolts 34 pass. Each retaining plate 30 has an arm 35 thereon which also preferably is slotted as at 36, the slots receiving pins or bolts 37 To operate the retaining plates 30, each arm 35 of the plates 30 at the sides of the doorway 11 is connected with a bellcrank lever 38, fulcrumed as at 39 on the car, and these bellcranks have connections with an operating lever. In the illustrated example, a link 40 extends from one bellcrank leverv38 to one arm of a T-shaped operating lever 41, i'ulcrumed as at 42 on the car at the inside or the outside according to the build of the car, the other arm of which lever is connected by a short link 43, with a bellcrank lever 44 fulcrumed as at 45 on the inside of the car beneath the roof. A bellcrank lever 46, similar to the lever 44', isprovided at the opposite side of the door and fulcrumed as at 47, said bellcranks 44 and 46 being connected by a rod 48 extending above the doorway. 11, and the lever 45 is connected with the adjacent bellcrank 38 by a link 49. Thus, the operating-lever 41, it'will be seen, is simply interposed in the link connections between one of the levers 38 and the adjacent upper bellcrank lever 44, while the opposite upper bellcrank 46 is directly connected with its bellcrank 38. The rocking of the lever 41 serves thus to withdraw both retainers 30 when it is dedesired to discharge the grain by permitting the lower door section 18 to swing outwardly.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a freight car having a door opening, members on the car at each side of the door opening forming guideways extending upwardly beneath the roof of the car, a door movable in said guideways, said door'being composed of upper and lower sections, the lower section being hinged to the upper section to swing out- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, D. 6.

the lower sections being hinged to the upper section to swingoutwardly through the door opening when the door is in the opened position, co-actingmeans on the door and in said guide ways to arrest the downward movement of the door when said door is in position for the lower section to swing outwardly, and displaceable retainers on the car at the sides of the door opening below the guideways and-complementary thereto to guide the lower door section. and prevent movement thereof on its hinges until the said retainers are displaced- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
