IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPlNG-WAGONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,552, dated December 5, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEXOR B. Snow, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and in the State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Dirt-Dump for Wagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of the same.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wagon. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view.

Like letters of reference denote like parts in the different views.

The nature of this invention relates to a device for tilting the bed of a wagon; and the object thereof is to discharge or dump its contents through the bottom. A more full and complete description of the aforesaid device is as follows:

In the drawing, Figure 2, A B represent the four wheels of a wagon, of which A is the front wheels and B the hind ones 5 said wheels are con structed as may be in the usual way. On said wheels is mounted the body, consisting of the bed or bottom planks C, and the sides and ends D E. The bed referred to consists of two planks, O, as aforesaid. Each plank is hinged to the bolster of the axle-trees at the point a, Fig. 2, thereby allowing each plank to be turned up edgewise, as shown in Fig.6, sections of the planks at the hinge being cut out to admit of their swinging clear of the bolsters F, to which the planks are hin ged, and upon which they are supported. The tilting device and lock consist of a lever, to, Fig. 1, the lower end of which is secured to the side of the body by a hinged joint, I, so that it can fall outwardly from the side of the body, and drop downwardly to a perpendicular, as shown in Fig. 3, also indicated by the dotted lines a, Fig. 1. To the side of the lever is connected the upper end of a spring-rod, J, whereas the lower end is attached to the edge of the plank by a staple-joint, as shown in said Fig. 1. In the side of the body, near the junction of the upper end of the rod J with the lever, is a clutch, L, into which the rod springs, and thereby holds said lever in an upright position against the side of the body, as shown in Fig. 1, and which rod holds or looks the plank O, to which it is attached in a horizontal position, thereby making close the bottom of the body or box of the wagon. Alike de vice is attached to each side of the body, and operated in a similar manner and for the same purpose.

The practical operation of the above-described dumping-wagon is as follows: The purpose of this wagon is for hauling loose dirt and dumping the same through the bottom, which, as aforesaid, consists of the planks O hinged to the bolsters in the manner as above described. The wagon when loaded is made to drop its contents by the driver, who takes the upper end of the lever in his hand and pulls it back and out of the notch L, and at the same time pushing it outwardly; the springrod J by this effort pushes downward the edge of the plank and turns it up edgewise, thereby allowing the dirt to fall from the box through the half-open bottom. This being down, the other is tilted in the same manner, and the balance of the dirt discharged from the box. The position of the two planks when thus tilted up is shown in the end view, Fig. 3, and which is also indicated by the dotted lines O, Fig. 1. The dirt being dumped, the two planks composing the bottom of the box are then readjusted, and secured by the locking device above described.

This manner of dumping the dirtis easily and quickly done, and without requiring the driver to leave his seat for that purpose.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the tilting planks C U, lever Gr, spring-rod J, and catch L, in the manner as described, and for the purpose set forth.
