Description

WILLIAM M. WATKINS.
Improvement in Cultivators.
Patented Nov- 28,1871.
flttorneys.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM M. WATKINS, OF TALOOTT, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 121,439, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it, may concern:
Be it known that I, V ILLIAM M. WATKINS, of Talcott, in the county of Charlotte and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and do hereby declare th at the following is a full, clear, and exact description th ereof, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts of a cultivator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my entire cultivator. Fig. 2 shows the rear plow in enlarged dimensions. Fig. 3 shows the front plow also in enlarged dimensions.
A A represent two parallel beams connected by means of cross-bars B B, and having the draft-beam 0 secured in the center between the two side beams. The draft-beam O is stayed by means of metallic braces D D, connecting it with the front ends of the side beams. Upon each of the side beams A A are two sockets orloops, a a, the front one being on the inner side and therear one on the outer side of the beam. In these sockets or loops are inserted the shanks of the cultivator-plows, and fastened at any height desired by any suitable or convenient means. The front plows have their wings extending only on the outer side, while the wings of the hind plows extend on both sides. E represents the shank; G, the wing; and H the point of each of said plows. The wing and point are made separate, and secured to the shank by means of screws or bolts, so that if either should become worn it can readily be removed and a new one substituted. On the inner or rear side of the wing G are two flanges, b 11, forming a groove, in which the shank E fits. In like manner there is a groove formed on the rear side of the point H, in which the lower end of the shank E is inserted, the upper edge of the point fitting in a notch or against a shoulder formed in the shank. The lower end of the wing Gr overlaps the upper end of the point, the point being suitably beveled so as to present an even outer surface.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the shank E, wing G, and point H, when said parts are constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The withiu-described cultivator, consisting of the frame A A, B B, O, and D D, metallic sockets a a, shanks E E, wings G with flanges I) I), and grooved points H H, all constructed and arranged substautially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of August, 1871.
WVM. M. WATKINS.
