MUSICAL CHART.

To all whom it may concern it known that I, Crmnnns L. ScI-IU'rzE, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Hannibal. in the county of Marion and State of Missotrh have invented new and useful improvements in Musical Charts, 01 which the folli'iwing is a specification.

This invention relates to musical charts and has arti wular application to a musical key indicator.

The chief characteristic of this invention resides in the provision of a device of this chi-iracter having a dial and a, linder, the dial having musical indicia. thereupon while the finder is provided with openings for exposing some of the indicia whereby any desired scale in music and the relative minor scale may be easily and automatically determined, together with the signature.

Other objects of the invention will appear as the specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings in detail, my invention comprises a sheet 1 formed of any suitable material such as cardboard or the like, and which in this instance is of rectangular formation. Extending transversely through the sheet 1 at a point centrally thereof is a stud. 2 upon which is pivotally mounted a finder strip 3, the latter being elongated and pivotally connected to the stud at its medial portion- Inscribed upon the sheet 1 and arranged concentrically of the stud 2 is a spaced circular series of numerals l which range from 0 to 7 to indicate the number of sharps or flats in the respective keys as will be hereinafter described. Arranged concentrically of the numerals 4i and in spaced relation thereto is a circular series of letters 5 ranging from A to G inclusive which are adapted to indicate the major keys in sharps. The next series of letters as indicated as at 6 designate the major keys in flats while the two outer series 7 and 8 respectively indicate the relative minor keys in sharps and flats respectively.

It will be noted that all of the numerals and letters within each of the series are arranged in radial alinement with each Specification of Letters Patent.

The finder strip 3 has its medial portion, or that portion adjacent its pivot, widened as at 9 in. such a manner as to overlie and thus conceal the series of numerals :l. The opposite ends of the finder strip or those portions which are disposed upon opposite sides of the pivot are provided with a longitudinally extending series of spaced openings 10 and 10 which are preferably circular in contour. The openings 10 are designed to expose the major scale, while the openings '10 will expose the relative minor scale. The series of openings upon one side 01 the pivot are designed and so disposed as to reveal the major and relative minor keys in flats and the corresponding number of flats, while the openings upon the opposite end expose the major and relative minor keys in sharps and the corresponding number of sharps. From this it will be seen that the openings upon the flat indicating side are disposed so as to reveal certain of the numbcrs in the inner series 4 and certain of the letters in each of the series 6 and 8, while the openings upon the opposite end reveal certain of the numerals in the inner series and certain of the letters in each of the series 5 and 7.

It will thus be seen that I have provided three openings upon each side of the pivot, the openings being so arranged as to expose certain of the series of letters as previously described. Inscribed upon the finder strip 3 and arranged adjacent the openings 10 are indicia indicating the information divulged by each of the openings, that is to say the two inner openings or those adjacent the pivot are provided with indicia No. and the sign used to indicate flats and sharps respectively, while the openings adjacent the inner openings in each of the series has the word Major inscribed adjacent thereto, and the outer openings in each of the series are provided with the indicia Minor and the character sharp and flat respectively.

It will be seen from this construction that when the finder strip is rotated upon the sheet to the desired key, the openings will reveal the key note, the relative minor key and the number of flats or sharps in the key so that the operator may quickly ascertain this information. The indicia inscribed upon the sheet contain all of tie major keys in sharps and flats, the natural key, and the relative minor keys, so that it Will be seen that l have provided means for ascertaining the relative minor key and corresponding number of sharps and flats in any of the keys.

A musical chart comprising a sheet having inscribed thereon a circular series of numerals indicating the number of sharps or flats in each key and arranged in concentric relation to the center of the sheet, key notes a ranged in concentrically disposed circles about the first mentioned series, the key notes of each series being in radial alinement with the numerals in the list mentioned series, and a finder strip pivoted between its ends at the center of the first mentioned series and having the end portions thereof formed with openings, the openings in one end portion of the strip registering with certain of the respective s "ies and the openings in the other end portion of" the strip registering with certain 0-1 the other series.
