Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 21, 1916. Serial No. 85,600.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR M. TUTHILL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Universal Knife-Holding Bars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a knife holding bar for grinding machines.
The object and. purpose of the present invention is to provide a knife holding bar which is not only adapted to hold the heavier and thicker knife used universally up to a few years ago in wood working machines such as planers or the like, but one which may also be used to hold the thinner and lighter knives made of the new grades of high speed steel which have been coming into use during the past few years and which at present are used in many instances in said wood working machinery.
The present invention is a universal bar adapted to hold either of the types of knives to bring them into position for grinding on a grinding machine, it of course being ap parent that knives of both characters at present will in many instances be found in factories or like establishments where wood working is carried on.
To this end I have embodied my invention in a construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a grinding machine equipped with the universal knife holding bar. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the bar with the clamps removed which hold the thinner and lighter knives. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bar. Fig. 4 is a view from the side opposite that shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of said bar. Figs. 6 and 7 show in elevation an end view of one of the clamps which is used to fasten the thinner and lighter knives in position on the bar; and Figs. 8 and 9 show edge and side views respectively of a removable metal backing strip against which the rear edge of the high speed steel knives rest when positioned in the bar for grinding.
Like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The grinding machine as shown in Fig. 1 comprises a mam supporting frame or castlng 1 which is equipped with bearings 2 at its upper end for carrying a shaft 3, agrinding wheel being mounted on this shaft and housed within the housing i. In operation of the grinding machine shaft 3 is rotated continuously by suitable mechanism which, as it forms no part of the present invention, is not specifically described. A pair of T-shaped slots 13 are formed in one side of the bar as shown and the heavier and thicker knives used universally a few years ago may be secured to this means of bolts or the like, the heads thereof being seated in the slots and passing through slots or notches formed in said knives. This construction is old and no change is made in the bar so far as holding the knives of the thicker and heavier construction is con cerned.
On a side of the bar positioned at right angles to that side in which the slots 13 are cut the thinner and lighter knives formed from high speed steel are adapted to be positioned for grinding. A. plurality of clamps 14 are detachably and adjustably connected to this side of the bar by means of cap screws passing through openings 16 in the clamps and threaded into the bar 11. Each clamp 16 has an end bent inwardly as shown at 17 to bear against the knife 18 which is to be ground, this knife lying fiat against the side of the bar 11. Referring to Fig. 5, each clamp 17 at its upper end bears against a rod 19 which is permanently attached to the side of the bar by bar 11, recesses 20 being formed on the inner side of each clamp let to permit a pivotal movement of the clamp about the rod. The side of the bar 11 against which the knife 18 is clamped is also formed with a plurality of slots 21 extended the entire length of the bar in which a removable backing member 22 formed of metal may seat, said backing member being removable from any slot so that it can be insertedinto any other slot, one end being formed with a finger hold 23 for easy manual operation.
When a knife 18 is to be ground, it is placed against the sideof the bar 11, the backing strip 22 being inserted in the proper slot, the slot selected depending upon the width of the knife 18. The clamps 14 are then brought with their ends 17 against the knife and the cap screws tightened to hold the knife firmly in position, it being evident that with its edge resting against the backing strip 22 an even and proper loeating of the knife with respect to the bar will occur with its cutting edge substantially parallel to the sides of the bar. The knife holding bar may then be turned to position so as to grind the cutting edge to the proper bevel, supports 8 being moved to bring the knife in contact with the grinding wheel.
Various changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departing from my invention which is defined in the appended claims. All modifications in structure falling within the scope of said claims, accordingly, are to be considered as comprehended by my invention, the invention not being limited to the exact specific details of construction shown.
I claim r 1. In a device of the character described, a bar provided with a plurality of slots on one side extending lengthwise of the bar, a rod secured to and positioned lengthwise of the same side of the bar, clamping members having one end provided with a curved recess to receive the rod, and with the opposite end turned inwardly toward the bar, cap screws passing through the clamping members and into the bar, and a removable backing strip seated in one of the slots in said bar, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, a bar provided with a plurality of slots on one side extending lengthwise of the bar, a rod secured to said side of the bar adjacent a corner thereof, and a distance from the slots, clamping members at one end bearing against the rod and at the otherend turned inwardly toward the bar, means to draw said clamping members toward the bar, and a backing member removably seated in a slot under the clamping members.

In combination, a bar formed with a plurality of longitudinal slots in one side, clamping devices mounted on said side and having a pivotal mount at one end, means to draw saidmeans against a knife positioned between the bar and said means, and a backing member removably seated in a slot against which the stantially as described.
5. In combination, a bar, clamping means located at one side of the bar, means to clamp said means against a knife interposed between the bar and clamping means, and adjustable backing means against which the rear edge of the knife is adapted to seat to locate the edges of the knife in parallelism with the sides of the bar, substantially as described.
6. In combination,

a support, a grinding wheel thereon, a table below and in front of the grinding wheel, a carriage on the table, a bar positioned in front of the grinding wheel, means to mount said bar to rotate about a longitudinal axis, clamping means located on one side of the bar, means to clamp said means against a knife interposed between said bar and clamping means, a plurality of slots in the bar under said clamping means, and a removal backing member in one of said slots to properly locate said knife, substantially as described.
7. In combination, a bar, a plurality of clamping devices located on one side of the bar, a rod secured to the bar against which the clamping devices bear at one end and having pivotal movement with respect thereto, and means passing through the clamping devices into the bar to draw them toward the bar to clamp a knife or the like between them and the bar.
8. In combination, a bar, means for mounting said bar for rotation about a longitudinal axis, a plurality of clamping devices positioned along one side of the bar, a rod secured to the bar against which the clamping devices engage at one end, each clamping device having a concave seat to receive a portion of the rod, and screws passing through the clamping devices between the ends thereof and into the bar, substantially as described.
