To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALvAH JEWEL HOWD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nampa, in the county of Canyon and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to attachments for toilets and more particularly to ventilators therefor.

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and practical device of the above general character having few parts which will be cheap to manufacture and install and which will be reliable and eflicient in use and operation.

Other objects will be in part obvious from the annexed drawings and in part indicated in connection therewith by the following analysis of this invention.

This invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the members and in the relative proportioning and disposition thereof; all as more completely outlined herein.

To enable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features thereof that they may embody the same by the numerous modifications in structure and relation contemplated by this invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toilet with an attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail central transverse sectionalview of a part of the attachment; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional plan view of the attachment; Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the water motor; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2, taken slightly to one side thereof, showing a clutch; and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the clutch.

Referring now in detail to the drawings and more particularly to Fig. 1, 10 denotes a toilet provided with a normally raised seat 11 and a valve 12 of standard make through which the flushing water is adapted to pass, and known to the trade as the Royal flush valve, although other types may be used, if desired. The actuation of this valve is controlled by means of a trigger 13 connected with a hinge 14 of the seat in such a manner as to cause the flush water to pass therethrough when the seat is released and returned to its normally raised position, after use.

In the connecting flush pipe immediately back of the valve 12 is provided the attachment forming the subject of the present application. This attachment comprises an elongated cylindrical casing 15 divided into three chambers or parts, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. At one end is a chamber 16 provided with a driven member, such as a water wheel motor 17 mounted upon a shaft 18 located in suitable hearings in an V end cap 20 and a partition 21 to be actuated by the flush water. At the opposite end of the casing is another chamber 22 provided with a shaft 23 mounted in end cap 24 and partition 25 and carrying an exhaust fan 29. The opposite sides of this chamber connect respectively through pipes 27 and 28 with the toilet and an exhaust flue located within the wall.

The partitions 21 and 25 provide a central chamber 30 in which is located suitable means for storing up energy, such as a spring motor 31 of any desired type and a pawl and ratchet mechanism 32. Both of these parts are mounted upon the shaft 23 and this shaft is adapted to be clutch connected with the shaft 18, as by means of clutch rollers 33 riding in grooves 34 in the end of the shaft 18. The ratchet 32, s

shown in Fig. 5, is normally prevented from rotation in one direction by means of a spring actuated pawl 35 which is connected by means of rod 36 with a member 37 interposed between the hinge 14 and the trigger 13, as shown in Fig. 1. These parts are so positioned and arranged as to cause a winding of the spring motor when the flushing water is passing from the flush tank, not shown, downwardly past the wheel 17 to the valve 12.

to normal position, flushing water will actuate the water wheel 17 to wind the spring motor through the medium of the clutch 34. On the next operation, a depression of the seat 11 will release the pawl 35 shown in Fig. 5 by means of the connecting link 36, thereby starting the spring motor and exhaust fan within the chamber When the seat ll is next released the pawl automatically returns to its locking position, thus stopping the motor and the inflowing flush water will again restore it to the normal de ree of tension.

From the above, it will be seen that this invention is adapted to form a simple and practical attachment for toilets which will be inexpensive to manufacture and install with toilets now in use.

lVithout further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of this invention that others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various applications without omitting certain features that, from the standpointof the prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this invention, and therefore such adaptations should and are intended to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalency of the following claims.

I'claim as my invention:

1. In combination with a toilet having a flush pipe, a member mounted in said pipe adapted to be actuated by the flushing water, a motor adapted to store energy on actuation of said member, and a fan adapted to be driven by said motor on subsequent use of the toilet.

2. In combination with a toilet having a flush pipe, and a normally raised seat, a member adapted to be actuated by the flushing water as the seat is raised, a motor for storing energy on actuation of said member, and an exhaust fan adapted to be driven by said motor when said seat is subsequently depressed.

3. In combination with a toilet having a flush pipe, and a normally raised seat, a Water wheel adapted to be rotated by the flushing water, a fan, shafts therefor, a clutch between the shafts about which the water wheel and fan turn, and a spring motor adapted to be tensioned by the flushing water and adapted to drive the fan when the seat is depressed.

4. In combinat on wlth a toilet having a flush pipe, and a normally raised seat, a

water wheel adapted to be rotated by the flushing water, afan, shafts therefor, a clutch between the shafts about which the water wheel and fan turn,'a spring motor adapted to be tensioned by the flushing water and adapted to drive the fan when the seat is depressed, and means adapted to stop said exhaust fan as said seat returns to normal position.

5. In combination with atoilet having a flush pipe, and a normally raised seat, an exhaust fan, a shaft about which said fan is adapted to turn, a water wheel adapted to be rotated by the flushing Water, a shaft upon which said water wheel is mounted, a
