To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravenswood, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, Car-Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car seats of the walkover type, or that type of seat wherein the back is shifted from one side of the car seat to the other, but more particularly to a locking mechanism for locking the wall end of the seat to the wall-bracket, the seat being capable of being rocked upon a pedestal to make a clearance between the pedestal and the wall of the car, for;cleaning and other pur-.
poses.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a lock that securely holds the seat to the wall-bracket when the seat back occupies an extreme position at either side of the' seat, and one that may be released through the manipulation of the seat-back when the back is at a point intermediate of the two extreme positions.
Referring to the drawings-Figure 1 is a transverse section of the seat constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the seat with the cushion removed; and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the cushion tilting levers and a portion of one of the operating levers; Fig. 4C is a detail perspective view of the cushion-holding member.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a pedestal formed of a lower portion 2 for attachment to the floor and an upper portion 3 hinged to the lower portion by means of a clip 4. The upper portion of the pedestal is provided with two upwardly extending arms 5, secured to the tierods 6 by means of the usual clip 7 These tie-rods extend between the inner or wall end-plate 8 and the outer or aisle end-plate 9 of the seat and serve to rigidly connect the plates together. Extending between the end-plates and also connected to them are two central rods 10 which form pivots for links 11 which are pivoted at 12 to the lower broadened end of the back standards 13 between which standards the back-cushion is rigidly secured. These links extend beyond their pivots at their lower ends and have provided with studs 19 which extend into Y sockets in the bottom of the cushion.
The clip 4 is provided with avslot 20 for the passage of a short stud 21 carried by the horizontal portion of the upper part ofthe pedestal which pin is for the purpose of limiting the swinging movement of. the seat upon the pedestal.
The numeral 22 designates a latch pivoted to the inner face of the wall end-plate 8. This latch extends downwardly and has a head 23 with opposite shoulders 24 thereon which head passes through an elongated slot 25 in the lower flange 26 of the end-plate 8. The latch is provided with a lug 27 adapted to be engaged by the lower ends of the links 11, in shifting the seat-back, from one side of the seat to the other.
The numeral 28 designates the wall bracket which is provided with side flanges 29 and bottom flange 30 which bottom flange forms a seat for the aisle end-plate 8 and the flange 30 is provided with an aperture corresponding to the aperture 25 in the flange of the end-plate and the head of the latch extends through both flanges so that one or the other of the shoulders of the head of the latch may engage the under surface of the bracket flange to lock the seat to the bracket in each extreme position of the seat.
In operation, when the back is shifted, and when it is not desired to swing the seat upon the pedestal, the latch is merely forced alternately from one side to the other engaging in each extreme position the underneath flange of the wall-bracket and holding the seat in locked position, but when it is desired to unlock the seat fro-m the bracket the seat-back is halted in central position which permits the latch to swing to vertical position when the shoulders on its head will be clear of the edges of the recess in the bracket when obviously the Wall end of the seat may be lifted, swinging the whole seat upon the pedestal. 7 c
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim is 1. In a car seat, in combination, a pedestal having a lower part adapted for attachment to the floor and an upper hinged portion connected with the seat, a suitable support for the wall end of the seat, locking means carried by the seat and adapted to engage the wall bracket, a shifta-ble seat back and means carried by the seat and actuated by the movement of the seat back in shifting, to lock the seat to the bracket in each extreme position of the seat back.
2. A car-seat, having in combination a pedestal consisting of upper and lower members, the upper member being hinged to the lower member and connected with the seat, so as to permit the seat to be swung upon the pedestal; a wall-bracket adjacent to the wall of the car; a headed latch carried by the seat and adapted to pass through a slot in the flange of the wall end-plate and engage said flange at either side of the slot to lock the seat in either extreme position, and means for actuating the latch to unlock the seat, so
as to permit it being swung upon the pedestal.
3. In a car seat, in combination, a pedestal having a portion'adaptedfor attachment to the floor, and. an upper hlnged portion c0nnected with the seat, suitably connected endplates, links pivoted between the end-plates,-
a seat-back pivoted to the links, a wall bracket having a flange with an aperture therethrough and a seat for supporting one of the end-plates, a pivoted latch carried by one end plate and having head extending through the aperture in the flange of the bracket, said links being adapted, in, the
