BED-MOTION FOR PRINTING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
yPatented Jan. so, 1917.
Application filed August 6, 1915. Serial No. 43,903.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BRUCE citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Motions for Printing-Machines, fully described and represented in the C. WHITE, a
following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
rlhis invention relates particularly to bed motions for bed and cylinder printing machines, and especially to that cla-ss of machines in which the bed is driven during the main part of its stroke through rack and gear mechanism, and at the end of its stroke in either direction is controlled and actuated by levers brought into engagement with the bed.
The especial object of the invention 1s to provide a simple, efficient and durable mechanism by which the proper motion of the bed shall be secured, especially in reversing the movement of the bed at each end ol its stroke so as to secure a smooth and easy movement of the bed in these parts of its movement, while at the sametime permitting a simple, trame. y
For a full understanding of the invention, a detailed description of a construction. embodying the same in its preferred form will now he given in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and the features forming this invention then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings-Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4; are vertical sections taken inside the frame, showing the press in different positions of the bed.` Fig. 5 is a reversed plan view of the bed rack.
Referring to the drawings, A is the cylinder and B the bed ot a bed and cylinder printing machine, the bed B sliding on frame C in ways D, and'carrying on its under side the rack E, as usual in such constructions, a single central rack being used in the machine shown as the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Referring now to the bed driving mechanism, the bed is driven through the main portion of its movement in opposite direcby two gears 10, 11, rotating in oppocompact and low press site directions, and shown as meshing together, these gears engaging the rack E alternately, and for this purpose being mounted on a frame 12 mounted to rock on pivot shaft 13 and carrying an arm 11 having a bowl 15 running in the cam groove 16 on cam disk 17, this cam acting to rock the frame and raise and lower the gears 10, 11, alternately. Each of the gears 10, 11 is out away through a portion ot' its face circumferentially and widthwise, so as to form a gap ct extending partially across the tooth face of the gear, and the rack-E is provided at opposite ends with coextensive and corresponding gaps b extending partially across the face of the rack, the gaps a, b being upon opposite sides of the gears and rack, so that when a gear gap registers with a rack gap, the gear does not mesh with the rack, although in its raised meshing position.
rl`he bed is controlled and driven at the opposite ends of its stroke, independently of the gears 10, 11, by levers 18, 19 provided with bowls 1 at their upper ends which engage bearing notches 2 formed in brackets 20 secured on the lower side of the bed frame, the levers 18, 19 preferably being double, or formed of two bars carrying the bowls 1 between them, although this is not essential. Separate brackets and bearingnotches for the twolevers 18, 19 l are used in the construction illustrated, but it will be understood that this is not essential, but that a single bearing notch may be used for the two levers. The levers 18, 19 have movable fulcra permitting the upward and downward movement of the levers, these fulcra being formed by the swinging links 21 pivoted to the frame at 22, and in the outer ends of which the levers are pivotec. rllhe levers 18, 19, are actuated by crank rods 23 from crank pins 5 carried by gears 10, 11, these crank rods being pivoted to the levers at 25.
The control of the levers 18, 19 to secure the upward anddownward movement of the bowls 1 on the swinging levers to engage and release the bed and the substantially horizontal movement of the bowls 1 parallel with the bed during that portion of their movement when in control `of the bed, and especially in stopping and reversing the bed, is secured by the following means: Each of ranged so as to form a parallel movement device, by which the bowls 1 of levers 18, 19 move upward and downward as the levers swing to enter and leave the notches 2 on brackets 20, and move substantially horizontally 0r parallel with the bed during the main bed controlling movement, and the pivots 25 of the levers and crank rods move substantially in a straight line, which, with the gear and,v crank movement shown, intersects the center of the point 13 of the rocking gear frame 14.
The parts above described may be driven in any suitable manner to secure the desired timing', and their operation will be understood from a brief description in connection with the positions of the parts shown in the drawings. j
As shown in Fig. 1, the bed B is just coming into printing position on its movement to the right, being driven by gear 10 after being released by lever 18.` As the bed completes its printing movement to the right and approaches the end of its stroke, the lever 19 is rocked by crank rod 23 from gear 11, so as to move the lever outward or to the right, swinging` on links 24, 2l, and on this movement the bowl 1 is first raised into notch 2 on the right hand bracket 20, and then the bowl 1 is moved substantially parallel with the bed during the further outward movement of lever 19, and especially at the time of stopping and reversing the bed. The gear 10 is shown in Fig. 2 as just completing its bed driving movement, and the gears 10, 11 are to be shifted by the cam groove 16 to lower gear 10 and raise gear 11 forthe return stroke. As gear 10 closes its bed driving movement, lever 19 is moved outward from the position shown in Fig. 2, and takes control of the bed, retards it gradually to a stop at the end of its stroke, reverses it, and gradually accelerates its speed up to the speed of the gears 10, 11, and bowl 1 on lever 19 is then lowered from notch 2, friction from upward and downward movement of the bowl 1 in notch 2 during the control of the bed by the lever being avoided by the movement of the bowl parallel to the bed secured by the link motion shown. The same operation is repeated with lever 18 at the end of the movement of the bed to the left, the position of the parts as the bed approaches the end of its movement and is engaged by the lever 18, and
kafter the reversal of the bed as the lever 18 is advancing it into position to be taken by gear 10, being shown, respectively, in Figs. 3 and L1. In Fig. 4 it will be seen that gear 10 is just beging raised for meshing with rack E but with gaps a, b opposite each other', so that the gear` and Yrack will not mesh until the ends of the gaps are reached and the gear and rack are brought into mesh by the longitudinal movement of the bed.
The action of the link movement will be clear from Fig. 4, which shows the position of eXtreme bed movement, with the gears half rocked and the crank pins in their eX- treme positions in one direction. The rocking of the gear frame 12 is the same in degree and time in both directions from the position of Fig. 4, and from this position the pivots 25 move in straight lines which pass through the center of pivot 13, this result being secured by the link movement and resulting in the proper movement of the bowls 1.
The gaps a, b on gear 11 and rack E provide for raising the gear into position where the gear and rack will mesh at the inner ends of the gaps, so that the bed rack in its travel moves vinto mesh with the gear 11 at the end of the gap, instead of the gear being raised to bring its teeth into mesh during the movement of the bed. This gap action is preferably used as avoiding all danger of injury to the teeth, which would result from incorrect position in bringing them into mesh by vertical movement, and shortens the movement of the bed, as compared with constructions in which the rack runs beyond both gears before they are shifted, but these gaps in the gears and racks may be omitted.
The movement of the bowlsin a horizontal line parallel with the movement of the bed during the `control of the bed by the le- Vwiseis liable to produce vertical movement of the bed at the time of heaviest pressure on the bowls in controlling or moving the bed, and in any case increasing the friction load and inducing a rocking action in the bed motion. Uniformity of speed in moving the bed in both directions is secured, also, the pivot pins in the connecting rods traveling in a line horizontal and parallel with the movement of the bed, whether the crankpin is below or above the center line, so that the levers pick up the bed from the rack motion at exactly the rack speed and deliver the bed to the rack motion at exactly rack speed.
lhile the two oppositely rotating gears alternately engaging a single rack on the bed are preferably used for driving the bed during the main portion ofits movement, and the combination of this mechanism with .my improved means for reversing the bed mon or suitable means for driving the bed during the main portion of its movement, and such combinations are included within the invention.
While the invention is especially intended for bed and cylinder printing machines, it will be understood that it may be applied also to other machines employing a bed or similar member making a rapid reciprocation and requiring to be reversed at one or both ends of its stroke in a manner similar to the type beds of printing machines, and the term type bed is intended to include such other beds or similar reciprocating members.
