ELECTRICAL CONTROL To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Corn ,S'ri'cnrn, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident oi Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State '01" Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Electrical Control for Paper-Making Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
' The object of this invention is to control the heat supply to the cylinders of a paper the tension of the.sheet of paper or other sheet going through the machine, as said tension is changed by changes in the moisture of the sheet. When the sheet becomes "relatively dry it will shorten, and through means, such as herein indicated, will reduce or shut ofi the heat supply to the cylinders until the heat imparted to the sheet is reduced so that the sheet will not be too dry. When the heat is reduced and the sheet becomes too moist it will lengthen relatively and through the means, as herein indicated, will control the heat supply so as to increase the heat and dry the paper more. In this way, the sheet of paper orother material, as the tension changes through changes in moisture, will automatically regulate, the heat for drying the sheet.

There is-a bearing sleeve 30 carried by a bracket 42 secured to the upright frame member ll) by screws 31 and the same construction is o the opposite side of the machine and in the arm 33 rigidly connected therewith at each end ofa cylinderll and the outer ends of said arms carry a loose roller 85 which extends transversely of the machine below and to the front of said cylinder and bears against the inner surface of the sheet 12 as it' travels over said cylinder.
On one end of said rod 32 acontact arm 36 is rigidly secured between its ends. The short end of said contact arm 36'opcrates i between two stop screws 37 in ears 38 connected with the frame so as to,limit the oscillation of the arm 36. The long end of said arm 36 carries an adjustable contact 39 adapted to cooperate with a contact 40 adjustably mounted on a rigid arm 41 secured to said bracket 42.

3 and 4, so that their weight and the weight of the roller will tend to move the contact arm 36 by gravity down to the open position shown in Fig. 3, and thus open the circuit whenever the sheet of paper has become slack enough by being too moist and allows paper better.

The invention is not limited .to the particular switch means shown or to the valve arrangement, as it consists in utilizing the change in the slackness or tautness .oi" the sheet of paper or other sheet for, tl'irough suitable intermediate mechanism, controlling the reducing valve or other valve which controls the heat supply. The other parts of the mechanism shown herein and not described are of well-known construction and nature and are not fully explained here as they do not constitute any essential part of this invention.
The invention claimed is:
1. The combination of cylinders for mg a sheet of paper or the like, means for heating said cylinders, electrical means for regulating said heating means, and means controlled by the tension of a sheet of paper or the like as it passes over said cyl nders for operating said electrical heat \regulat ng means. i
2. The combination with cylinders for drying a sheet of paper or the like, means for heating said cylinders, and a valve "for controlling the heat of said cylinders, of means moved by the sheet of paper or the like passing over said cylinders according to its condition of moisture and dryness, an electric switch operated by said means, an electric circuit opened and closed by said switch, and electrical means controlled by said circuit for causing the regulation of the heat controlling valve.
3. The combination with cylinders for drying a sheet of paper or the like, means for heating said cylinders, and a valve for con trolling the heat of said cylinders, of a main frame for supporting said cylinders, a frame mounted on said main frame near one of said cylinders so as to rock and having a roller on it extending transversely of the machine so as to bear against the sheet of paper or -the like, and arranged so that said sheet as it'tightens from dryness will rock said frame in one direction and when it slacks from moisture will permit the frame to rock in the opposite direction, a contact arm secured to said main frame, an adjustable contact on said arm, acontact armv secured to said rocking frame, a contact in said movable arm adapted to be moved against and away from the other contact as the rocking frame is moved in one direction or the other, an electric circuit opened and closed by said switch, and electrical means controlled by said circuit for causing the regulation of the heat controlling valve.
4. The combination with cylinders for drying a sheet of paper or the like, means for heating said cylinders, and a valve for controlling the heat of said cylinders, of a main frame for supporting said cylinders, a frame mounted on said main frame near one of said cylinders so as to rock and havinga roller on it extending transversely of the machine so as to bear against the sheet of paper or the like, and arranged so that said sheet as it tightens from dryness will rock said frame in one direction and when it slacks from moisture will permit the frame to rock in the opposite direction a contact arm secured to saiil main frame, an adjustable contact on and arm, a contact arm secured to said rocking frame, a contact in said movable arm adapted to be moved against'and away from the other-contact as the rocking frame is moved in one direction or the other, means ior limiting the movement of said movable arm, an electric circuit. opened and closed by said switch, and electrical means controlled by said circuit for causing the regulation of the heatcontrolling valve.
5. The combination with cylinders for drying a sheet of paper or the like, of means for heating said cylinders, a valve for controlling the heat of said cylinders, electrically operated means for regulating said valve, an electrical circuit for energizing said electrical means, a switch for opening and closing said circuit, and means controlled by the tension. of the sheet of paper or the like as it passes over said cylinders for operating said switch.
6. The combination of cylinders fordrying a sheet of paper 01 the like, means for heating said cylinders, a valve for controlling said heating means, an auxiliary valve 'for controllin said heat controllin" valve and means controlled by the tension of a sheet of paper or the like as it passes over said cylinders for controlling the auxiliary valve.

8. The combination of cylinders for drying a sheet of paper .or the like, means for heating said cylinders, a valve for controlling said heating means, an auxiliary valve for controlling said heat controlling valve, and an electrical means controlled by the tension of a sheet of paper or the like as it passes over said cylinders for operating said auxiliary valve.
