OF BAYONNE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNORS TO NEW' YORK REVOLVING PORTABLE ELE- VATOR COMPANY, OF JERSEY GI'IY, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
REVOLVING PORTABLE ELEVATOR-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. so, 191?.
Application filed August 10, 1916. Serial No. 114,177.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM EDWARD BOEI-ICK, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, wand HENRY SHELDEN GERMOND, Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Portable Elevator-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in revolving portable elevators or tiering ma.- chines and particularly to improvements in mechanism for locking the rotatablymounted elevator-base in adjusted position upon the truck; and an object of this invention is to provide a locking mechanism of this character which will be simple in construction, comparatively cheap in manufacture and eiiicient and durable in operation and use.
Another object of this invention is to provide a locking mechanism which may be readily and easily operated by the foot of the workman.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of this invention and the best mode now known to us of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a side elevation of so much of a portable elevator as is necessary to illustrate this invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation looking in the direction of the arrow A; and Fig. 3 is a plan, the load-carrying platform being omitted for sake of clearness.
The body a of the truck 6 is supported upon a pair of rear wheels 0 and a front or steering wheel cl rotatably mounted in the fork e, which is free to turn in the bearing 7 after the manner of a caster-wheel mounting. From the elevator-base g, there rises a pair of standards h, within which there travels up and down a load-carrying platform 2' that is controlled by the hoisting cable 7'. The elevator-base g is fastened to the body a of the truck I) by means of a king-pin or king-bolt is upon which the elevator-base 9 turns as a pivot.
The foregoing parts are all old in this art and in the relation herein shown and described.
In order to lock the elevator-base 9 upon the truck 6, a locking screw or is adjustably mounted in the elevator-base 9 so that its lower end may be forced against the top of the body a of the truck I). It will be found that there is a certain amount of looseness or lost motion between the kingbolt 70, the truck-body a and the elevatorbase 9; and, by turning the screw on in the proper direction, these parts may be tightened relatively to one another and the elevator-base g fixed in position upon the truck-body a. The head 22 of the lockingscrew m is somewhat cup-shaped and there is formed in its rim a series of cuts or re cesses a of such a shape and size as to receive the foot of the workman, who can, while using both his hands in manipulating the elevator, tighten or loosen the lockingscrew on with his foot.
IVe claim:
1. A revolving portable elevator including a truck; an elevatonbase pivotally mounted thereon; a load-carrying platform carried by said elevator-base; and a locking screw mounted in said elevator-base and arranged to bear frictionally against said truck and thereby to lock the same and said elevator-base together.
2. A. revolving portable elevator including a truck; an elevator-base pivotally mounted thereon; a load-carrying platform carried by said elevator-base; and a locking screw mounted in said elevator-base and arranged to bear frictionally against said truck and thereby to lock the same and said elevator-base together; said locking screw being formed with a head shaped to receive the foot of the workman for turning said screw.
Signed at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State'of New Jersey, this 8th day of August, A. D., 1916, in the presence of the two undersigned witnesses.
