- My invention consists in a peculiar construction of dies whereby the leather of a harness-pad may be shaped and filled under pressure and within the same female die, and whereby a flange may be formed on the edge of the leather to enable it to be riveted conveniently.
- Figure 1 represents the mold A and die B, between which the leather 0 is first shaped, either for one-half of a pad, as shown, or for the entire double harness-pad.
- a projecting flange, a is formed on the edge of the leather, as in Fig. 3, so that it can, when stuffed, be riveted or otherwise fastened to the metal base or support of the pad.
- Figs. 2 and 4 show the leather in the same moldA, and stuffing D of suitable kind put within the same.
- a die, E properly shaped, is pressed upon the stuffing to compress it Within the leather and give it the desired thickness at the several parts of the pad. After the stuffing has been thus compressed the die E is taken off and the leather riveted or otherwise fasten ed to the metal base or frame of the pad, which is placed upon the bowl.

CONRAD GAHB, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF MAKING HARNESS-PADS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD GAHR, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Method of Making Harness-Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- 'Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the dies for shaping the leather covering of the pad. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the dies for filling the packing into said leather covering. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 on the line 'a; 01:. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of Fig. 2 on the line 3/ y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a peculiar construction of dies whereby the leather of a harness-pad may be shaped and filled under pressure and within the same female die, and whereby a flange may be formed on the edge of the leather to enable it to be riveted conveniently.
Figure 1 represents the mold A and die B, between which the leather 0 is first shaped, either for one-half of a pad, as shown, or for the entire double harness-pad. A projecting flange, a, is formed on the edge of the leather, as in Fig. 3, so that it can, when stuffed, be riveted or otherwise fastened to the metal base or support of the pad. Figs. 2 and 4 show the leather in the same moldA, and stuffing D of suitable kind put within the same. A die, E, properly shaped, is pressed upon the stuffing to compress it Within the leather and give it the desired thickness at the several parts of the pad. After the stuffing has been thus compressed the die E is taken off and the leather riveted or otherwise fasten ed to the metal base or frame of the pad, which is placed upon the bowl.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The dies A B E combined, applied, and relatively constructed, as described, so that the leather shall be successively shaped and stuffed in the same female die and by the mode of operation above set forth.
2. The two dies A B, combined, constructed, and applied, as described, to form on the leather a flange, a, to be riveted, as well as the cavity to be stuffed.
Witnesses: CONRAD GAHR.
