The position of the pawls 7 and 9 is such that shaft 4: will be turned half a revolution before pawl 8 will drop into recess 13, formed on the sleeve 14; in other words, the alarm spring will be wound and set before pawl 8 engages with shoulder 13 and any movement is transmitted to turn the exterior winding shaft 5. Further turning movement of the key 6, after pawl 8 has been moved into engagement with recess 13, will cause sleeve 14, with connected arm 27 to move in the same direction, causing the main cock spring 28 to become wound and the dial hand 3 to be moved as this is secured on .the sleeve 14:; the key being turned until the desired time is indicated by the hand. The key is then released permitting the clock mechanism to operate and return the hand to zero position, causing the clock to stop and at the same time an alarm to be given. The return movement or speed of the indicator hand 3 is limited by the turning movement of shaft 5 and the escapement30; the indicator hand turning in unison with sleeve 14 and arm 27 through means of the double pawl 26 which engages with the teeth in ratchet wheel 25 secured upon shaft 5.
The return movement of shaft 5 caused by the driving action of the main-clock spring 28 through arm 27, pawls 26 and ratchet gear'25, which is limited by the escapement movement 30, will finally bring the indicator arm 3 back to zero position.
Instantaneously with the arrival of the hand 3 at this point the lower end-33 of arm 27 engages with a bell-crank 34 tripping this and releasing the alarm mechanism to permit. the knocker arm to operate. The alarm is thus given instantly with the arrival of thefindicator hand at zero position, giving the desired warning.
The provision of the loosely mounted winding key 6 makes the structure as a whole practically fool-proof as the key can be turned as often as desired in the wrong in other words, the movement of the indi-.
cator arm will'not efiect the successful operation of the alarm as the alarm spring is already sufliciently wound before the hand is moved. The hand can in this manner be distance, as the case may be.
The provision of the double pawl 26, which engages the ratchet-gear 25, of standard construction, having sixty teeth permits the hand to be set at points on the dial indicating minutes or half minutes as one pawl is a little shorter than the other; the
A timing device constructed as here shown is neat in appearance, simple and substantial in construction and absolutely fool-proof as turning movement of the key in the wrong direction will not effect the operating mechanism in any manner.
The device may be used for many purx poses, for instance, as a timing device in connection with culinary purposes of'all kinds, both in the home and factory. It may also be used to great advantage in connection with photographic work, such as printing and developing time exposures, etc. It has also been found useful in connection with many of the manufacturing arts where the element of timeenters as a necessary factor and also as a timer in telephone oflices where long distance calls are controlled by time.
The materials and finish of the several parts of the timing device are such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate. V
