.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD B. JACOBSON, a citizen of the United Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition-Timers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for regulating the time of ignition or sparking in internal combustion engines.
Apparatus of the class described commonly includes an internal rotary portion adapted to make and break a succession of low tension primary circuits, corresponding to the number of engine cyllnders and an adjustable housing portion for inclosing the rotary portion and carrying contacts for successive contact by the rotary-portion and arranged in the several circuits.
The presentinvention has for its object the provision of improved means for the introduction of a lubricant into the shell or housin portion of the timer apparatus.
To t is end the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts'as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred form of embodiment of the invention, and wherein-.-
Figure 1 is a side view of an approved form of ignition timer, with my device'operatively mounted on the housing portion thereof, the relative position of the oil cap or cover when lifted being indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a front same, a portion of the timer housing being cut away to disclose the inclosed rotary por tion; and Fig. 3, a detail view of the pil opening provided in the timer housing.
As shown the rotary portion 1 of the timer device is mounted to move with a cam-shaft 2 which is supposed to be geared to the main engine shaft (not shown) in the usual man' ner. The rotary portion 1 is arranged to contact with the lower end of one or more terminals 3, 3, etc. mounted exteriorly on the shell or housing 4, and extending through the shell into the interior of the housing, the lower ends of the terminals (not shown) being usually terminated in appropriate contacts embedded-on the inner surface of an insulation ring 5 within the housing over which the rotary portion travels.
The rotary adjustment of the housing 4 States, residing at upper end with a transverse view of the with relation to the inclosed rotary portion 1 is controlled by an arm in the form of an upright plate 6 mounted exteriorly of the housing on the upper side thereof, the arm or plate being provided at the lower end with spaced feet 7, 7, inclined forward and downward at an angle to the body of the plate and suitably secured to the housing by rivets 8, 8. The plate 6 is provided at its opening 9 to re ceive a bushing 10 mounted therein as a convenient form of support for the detachable connection of a control rod (not shown).
As shown, in combination with the control-arm or plate6, I provide an oil cap or cover 11, to protect an opening 19, (Fig.3) provided through the Wall of the housing 4 at a point somewhat below the base of the plate 6, said opening being provided for the introduction of oil or other lubricant into the interior tion of the rotary portion 1 and the traveled surface of t structed in the form of a ably reduced in width at which is curved slightly upward toform a convenient lip 12 by which to raise the cover from its normal hinged at its rear end to the plate 6 by means of parallel spaced rearward extensions in the form of loops or eyes 13, 13, arranged to pivot upon a bar 14 carried by upright eyebutts 15, 15, provided at opposite points. on the feet 7, 7, cover being flat p'late preferits forward end of the housing for the lubricae ring 5. In normal position the cover 11 is evenly seated over the oil inlet 19 to exclude the admission of dirt, an annular seat in the form of a hollow rivet 18 extending slightly above the surrounding surface of the housing 4 being preferably provided around the margin of the inlet.
The cover 11 constructed as herein shown forms an ample dust-proof cap for the protection of the inlet 19 to displacement when lubrication of the timer is required, such displacement being accomplished by the introduction of a finger or of the funnel of the oil-can under the lip 12.
One of the advantages of an oil inlet and no I and readily lends itself cover constructed for use in connection with an ignition timer, in accordance with my invention, is a free and unobstructed passage for lubricant introduced into the interior of the housing. A further advantage is the form of cover. or closure. to the oil inlet,
