SUITES CONTAINER AND CU'TER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE I1; 1914.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
. Illunlnnlnu i fr l and State of California, have invented cerf tain new and useful improvements in Butter Containers and Cutters, of which the following is a specication.
'lhis invention .is in the nature of a butter container and cutter and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be simple inconstruction, effective in operation and not liable to breakage or disarrangement with ordinary use.
A special object of the invention is to pro vide means in a device of this character which readily 'measures from a quantity of butter contained in the body any desired size or piece, said means comprising mechanism for projecting any desired amount of the contents beyond the end of the boielike body for the action of a lmife.
A further object of the invention is to provide a generally improved device of the specified character and with these objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of the parts of a device of the specied character which `will be first fully described and afterward specifically claims ln order -that the construction and operation thereof may be readily comprehended, l will now proceed to specically describe my invention, in connection with the accompanying drawings, illustrating an approved embodiment thereof, in which drawings-w Figure 1 represents my invention in perspective, the body being closed, showing a knife'in its position of rest, Fig. 2 represents a vertical, longitudinal sectional view of the device with the parts in the same positions as in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. 1, with the body open and the knife in position for operation, Fig. i represents a transverse, vertical sectional View with the parts in the same position as ,in Fig. 1.
Like referencecha-racters mark the same parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring specically to the drawings, 5 represents the top, 6 the bottom, 7 the rear end and 8 and 9 the sides of the body of the device, said body being of elongated rectan gular box-like form, and the front end being open and provided with a closure in the form of a door 10 attached by any suitable hinges 11 and provided with a catch or latch conune 11, 1914.

sisting of a part 12 secured to the boi; and a part 13 secured to the door, one part having a sliding hook 1d to engage pins on the other. Any other suitable hasp, latch or catch may be used.
Fhe bor; or body is preferably made with. an outer case comprising an outer plate 16 of sheet tin, nickel plated, or aluminum, and an inner plate 17 of similar or other approved metal, between which plates is a lin ing 18 of asbestos or any other suitable nonheat-conducting material.
l/Vithin the outer case is an inner case 13 which will be preferably made of glass, china, porcelain, or aluminum, although any other approved material may be used, Sad inner case being intended to receive a carrying plate 20 upon which is to be placed a roll or rectangular block of butter, said carrying plate being provided with an upturned flange 21 at its rear end.
The inner case 19 is longitudinally slotted in its bottom as at 22 to receive a rack 23 secured to or formed on the under side of the carrying plate 20, of aluminum or other suitable material, said rack when the carrying plate is in position in the inner case, engaging a pinion 2-1 on a horizontal shaft 25 suitably journaled in the outer case 15 and provided at one-end, as at 26, with a handle projecting beyond the side of said outer case.
- The door 10 comprises an outer case 27 which, when the door is closed, abuts against the'end of the outer case of the body, and
an inner plate 23, which, when lthe door is closed,` projects into the inner case of the body, a cork or other suitable packing 29 being provided around the edge of said i nner plate, to insure a close joint which wlll prevent the admission of the outer air when the door is closed. The outer and inner plates of the door will preferably be made of aluminum or other suitable metal, but any approved material may be used..
Any suitable knife may be used and 1n the form shown there is suitably secured to one side of the outer case near its open end a bracket 30 in which is provided a vertical bore or seat to receive a pin 31 of a pivot block 32 which may be secured by a nut and washer 33 or other suitable means which will permit of its rotation, said pivot block being bifurcated vor provided with jaws 311 between which, suitably pivoted on a pin or pintle 35, is a knife 36 provided at its free end with a suitable handle 37, Which, when the knife is at rest, as shown in Fig. 1, rests in and on a bracket 33 secured to the outer case near its closed end. A lug 39 formed integral with the bracket 30 provides an abutment for the rectangular base of the pivot block 32 and cooperates with the adjacent end of the body to guide the cutting movement of the blade 36.
1n operation, the door 10 is opened as shown in Fig. 3 and the butter on the carrying plate 20 moved into proper position for the cutting operation of the knife, 35 by rotating the handle 2(i. rll`he handle 3T of the knife 36 is then disengaged from the supporting bracket 3S until the rectangular base of the pivot block 32 abuts the adjacent face of the lug 39 and stops the movement thereof. 'lf he knife is then swung on the pivot pin 35 to cut through the butter on the carrying plate 20.
1t will be understood that any desired size of piece or any number of pieces of butter may be cut by the knife 3G by simply adjusting the carrying plate by means of the handle 26 operating the carrying plate 20.
The provision of the inner case 19 made of glass, china, porcelain., or like material, is of great advantage, inasmuch as it permits of the ready removal from the outer, nonheat-conducting casing, of the only part which is liable to come in Contact with the butter and thereby become soiled. rlihis inner case is readily and easily cleanable and can be kept in a sanitary condition. but the outer case being of different materials,
would be very difficult to clean when contaminated by contact with the butter, and particles of the butter adhering thereto might be permitted to remain in the case suiiciently long to infect the fresh butter inserted f rom time to time.
rEhe provision of the slidable/plate, of
i easily cleanable material, fitting in the bottom of the inner casing, is also of great advantage. which it is formed, this plate'can be readily cleaned and kept sanitary. By the adoption of the rack and pinion for operating the plate, it can be readily removed from the casing for cleaning purposes, and inserted therein, without the removal of vany fastening or other parts. By reason o f this slid- By reason of the material ofing plate closely fitting in the inner casing, the slot in which the rack operates is closed against the admission of air.
rl'he many advantages of my construction will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it most nearly appertains, and it is obvious that slight changes and variations from the constructions herein specifically described, may be made, within the limits of thevappendedclaim, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus.fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1n a butter container of the class described, an elongated rectangular casing open at one end and comprising inner and outer spaced apart metallic members, the bottom of the inner member thereof having a depression in its center adjacent the open end, non-heat conducting material between said members to prevent the entrance of heat or cold to or from the interior of said casing, an inner sanitary casing of' vitreous material closely fitting within the outer casing and being readily removable to permit the same to be cleaned, said inner casing being open at one end and having its bottom centrally longitudinally slotted from its rear wall to its open end, a movable sanitary readily cleanable carrying plate to receive the butter, closely fitting the inner casing and covering the slot in its bottom to prevent the entrance of butter, said plate being slidable on said slotted bottom, a longitudinally extending rack depending from the bottom of said plate centrally thereof and slidably disposed in said slot, a pinion in said depression meshing with said rack, and a shaft fixed to said pinion and extending transversely through and rotatably mounted in said outer casing with its outer end projecting `therebeyond, said butter carrying plate being ejected by rotation of said pinion.
1n testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE E. TERRY.
