' ADVERTISING DEVICE.
- Application filed February 18, 1914, Serial No. 819,469. Renewed June 10, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. LoFTUs, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to an advertising display mechanism and belongs to that class wherein a series of display cards are successively projected radially outward from a central space to expose their advertising matter.
The invention is particularly described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings by which it is accompanied, which:
Figure 1 is a sectionalview face on the line BB in Fig. 2 showing the mechanism for operating the slide cards in one arm of the cross. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line AA in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the casing and their movable display cards complete. Fig. 4 is a face view of the operating cam, and Fig. 5, a vertical section of the same.
A substantially square box-like frame 2 has a right angled partition 3 at each corner that will leave a cross shaped space across the middle of the casing, the arms 4 of which cross are equal to one another and substantially equal to the interspace 7 at the intersection of the arms of the cross.
Vithin each space 4 are slideways 5 adapted to receive advertising display cards 6. These slideways are all parallel to one another but are in different planes in each arm 4 so that they may be extended nearly across the central space 7 at the intersection of the arms of the cross and allow the cards 6 to be withdrawn within that space. The back space of each arm 4 is used for a fixed advertisement which is covered and uncovered at regular intervals by the display cards 6. The slidable display cards 6 are operated to move them to and from the central interspace by the following mechanism: Rotatably mounted in the back of the central intersection space 7 is a disk 10 which may be slowly rotated by any approved means, preferably by a small motor and worm gear. In both the front and the back face of this disk 10 are eccentric grooves 11. In the back groove 11 projects a pin or roller 12 from the end of a lever arm 13 parallel to the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 102,020.
which is secured on a tubular sleeve 14 rockably mounted on a pin 15 secured in the back of, the frame 2 at the corner of the partition 3. Secured on this same sleeve 14 so as to rock with it in a plane which is adjacent to that of the slideways 5 is a lever arm 16, the end of which is connected by a link 17 to a lever 18 pivotally mounted at 19 to the slideway 5 or other convenient fixed part. The other end of this lever 18 is connected by a link 20 to a lever 21, which is pivoted at 22 to the opposite slideway 5 and at the other end is connected by a rod 23 to the front display card 6. The back card 6 of this group is operated in the same inanner by a similar system of levers separately movable on the same pivots. These levers are shown by the full center lines in Fig. 1, which center lines also show the secondary position of the levers described. The levers l8 and 16 of the back card are secured on a tubular sleeve '25'mounted on the sleeve14 and derive their movement from the groove 11 of the front face.
The drawing shows a group of two cards in each arm space 4 of the cross, and the successive exposure of these with the exposure of the advertising matter at the back of the space 4 will require the outthrow of each cam eccentricity to occupy one-third of the circle, the outthrow of the groove in the back of the disk leading, while that of the front follows with its third and for the remaining one-third of a revolution both cards will be within the central space 7 to display the advertisement on the back of space 4.
The cards of the group in each arm 4 of the cross are operated in a similar manner from the same cam grooves, the lever system by which the eccentricity of the cam grooves is multiplied to the cards being mounted on separate pins '15, 19 and 22 which are located in the same relationship to the slideways of each. Of these other groups the pins 15 only are shown in Fig. 1 so as not to confuse the illustration of the lever mechanis In use, assuming that the two cards connected to the mechanism illustrated are withdrawn within the central space, the advertising matter on the back of the space 4 is displayed for a period of time occupied by one-third of the revolution of the disk 10. At the termination of this one-third of a revolution the outthrow of the groove 11 in the front face of the cam will, through the lever system described, project the back card outward for one-third of a revolution,
at the conclusion of which the back card will be withdrawn and the outthrow of the groove 11 in the back face of 10 will project the front card, and will hold it out for onethird of a revolution. The front card will then be withdrawn and during the last third of the revolution the advertising matter in the back of 4 will again be displayed, completing the cycle for one group. This same order of projection and withdrawal will be successively carried on with the cards of each of the tour spaces a, each group being actuated by a duplicate lever mechanism of its own with a movement derived from the grooves 11 of a common disk 10.
Fixed advertising matter will be displayed in' the spaces 5 between the arms of the cross and on the cover plate 8 which incloses the central space 7. Space will be preserved in the depth of the casing 2 for illumination of the advertising matterfrom within or such illumination will bethrown upon the face of the device from without.
Having now particularly described my invention, I hereby declare that what 31 claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is:
1. An advertising device, comprising the combination with a suitable supporting frame having a central withdrawal space,
adjacent and parallel slideways projecting horizontally and vertically outward from this space, advertising display cards endwise movable in the slideways, a cam rotatably mounted within the withdrawal space to rot-ate in aplane parallel to the slideways, and means for connecting each card to the eccentricity of the cam to project them successively from the withdrawal space and return them thereto at regular intervals.
2. An advertising device, comprising the combination with a substantially square casing', having a right angled partition at each corner that will leave a cross shaped space across the middle of the casing, a slideway extending along each arm of the cross and into the central space at the intersection, said slideways being in adjacent and parallel planes, an advertising card endwise movable in each slideway a cam rotatably mounted in the intersection space to rotate in a plane parallel to the slideway and a lever system multiplying the eccentricity of the cam to, successively project each display card from the intersection s"ace outward into the arms and to withdraw the same.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
