.which is movable, together with a handle which may be manipulated to tighten themovable jaw to the proper operative relation and subsequent to the tightening operation may be used to swing the wrench to turn the pipe.
A further object is to so construct the parts that when an adjustment of the movable jaw has been obtained, this adjustment Will be retained until certain of the parts .of the mechanism are manually released, but at the same time, slight play of the parts is permitted to allow the jaw to be slightly released in turning the wrench in the reverse direction, thus permitting the wrench to slide around the pipe in a reverse direction and obviating the necessity of providingratchets.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter set forth in connection with the drawings and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with portions of the main jaw broken away to more clearly illustrate the parts of the structure. Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on the-line 33 of'Fig. '1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view taken from the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1.
The main jaw member 1' is preferably composed of two side portions 2 and 3, which are shaped to form the gripping jaw 4 and are then suiiiciently separated in their remaining portions to provide the case 5.
The movable jaw member 6 has the extension rack bar 7 thereof shaped to be received between the side portions 2 and 3 and within the casing 5, and the gripping jaw is formed in the hook-shaped extension 8 which has the end thereof roughened or toothed as at 9, it being also understood that the jaw-portion 4 is likewise provided with sion rack bar 7 is made smooth and the friction bearing rolls 11 are mounted in the casing 5 to have this smooth edge bear and move thereon as the extension rack bar may be'moved into or Withdrawn from the case, and the outer edge of this extension rack bar has the rack teeth 12 formed thereon.
A handle 13 is bifurcated at its inner end to be fitted over the side portions 2 and 3 and at its bifurcated end is pivotally connected with the gripping jaw through the medium of the rivet or pin 14;. This handle 13 has a tongue extension 15 disposed between the arms thereof within the bifurcated portion, and the side portions 2 and 3 are spaced sufiiciently apart that this tongue extension 15 can have free sliding movement therethrough as the handle is swung around its pivotal mounting on the pin 14.
A toothed wheel 16 is mounted by the pin 17 ina relation to have the teeth thereof mesh with the teeth of the rack 12, this wheel 16 being spaced sufliciently from the friction rolls 11 that the extension rack bar 7 may have free movement longitudinally but is held against side play, and a second toothed wheel 18 is pivotally mounted between the side portions to form a bearing for the rack bar '7 at a point spaced from the mounting of the wheel 16. The toothed wheels 16 and 18 and the bearing rolls 11 form the guideway for the extension rack bar 7 which is held against lateral displacement through the bearing engagement with the side portions 2 and 3, and as the extension rack bar 7 is moved into or extended from the casing 5, the proximity of the toothed portions 9 and 10 of the jaws is varied.
The tongue 15 is widened out to form the arcuatecl rack 19, this rack being curved on the are of. a circle having the pivot pin 14 as its center, and being so disposed that when the parts are assembled the teeth of the rack mesh with the teeth of the wheel 16. By arranging the parts as set forth, when the handle 13 is moved, as to the right in Fig. 1, the engagement of theteeth of the rack 19 with the toothed wheel 16 will cause this wheel to be turned in a direction to draw the extension rack bar 7 farther into the casing 5, and in consequence, the toothed gripping portion 9 will be brought into closer proximity to the toothed gripping portion 10. "e as The edges of the side portions 2 and 3 between which the tongue extension 15 works are curved around the pivot pin 14: as a. center and the teeth 20 are provided on the side member 2 to form a segmental ratchet rack, the spring catch 21 being pro vided on the handle 13 to enga e with these teeth to hold the handle against return movement, and this spring catch being provided with a handle or knob which may be grasped and moved to release the spring catch. The side portion 3 has the teeth 23 provided on the curved edge thereof and faced in a direction opposite to the facing oi the teeth 20, and a spring catch member 2 1 is carried by the handle to engage with these teeth, the handle or knob 25 being provided to be moved to release the spring catch 24.
An indicating scale or measure 26 is located on one side of the casing 5, and has indications marked thereon to show various widths of setting of the movable jaw with respect to the fixed jaw so that the wrench may be set to take various sizes of pipe. An opening 27 is provided through the case 5 in the forward edge adjacent the toothed periphery of the wheel 18. If desired the curved hook of the member 6 may have the teeth 28 provided therein and the teeth may be provided at 29 on the members comprising the case 5 so that smaller pipes than those of a dimension to be gripped between the toothed faces 9 and 10 may be held and turned by the use of the wrench.
In the use of the device, the' wrench will be fitted with the toothed face 10 in bearing engagement on the pipe and then with the spring catch 2% released the handle 13 may be swung forwardly to the proper extent that the toothed face 9 is in proper bearing against the pipe, the spring catch 21 following the handle over the teeth 20 and acting to engage with the face of one of these teeth to hold the handle against accidental displacement or against return movement without first releasing the spring catch 21. With the parts in this relation, the catch '21 will be released to catch in one of the teeth 23 and the handle 13 may then be swung in either direction and the pipe will be held between the toothed faces 9 and 10, and will be turned, or if this pipe be fitted between the toothed portions at 28 and 29, these teeth will grip the pipe and cause the same to be turned.
\Vhen the wrench is being used in a close place, the handle may be swung back so that the spring catch will be brought into bearing abutment against the face of the adjacent tooth 20 and this will give suflicient play that the movable jaw 6 will be slightly released from the pipe and the proper loose turning movement can be accomplished, after which the pressure again exerted on the handle 13 will cause the jaw 6 to be again tightened to the working position and in consequence a new grip is obtained on the pipe and further turning movement may be transmitted thereto.
The reason for providing the orifice or opening 27 is that on some occasions it may be desired tosetand hold the movable jaw 6 in a fixed relation, and under such circumstances, a small red or pin may be insorted through this opening in the relation shown by the dotted lines and through engagement will the teeth of the wheel 18, this rod or pin will. hold the wheel against turning movement and in consequence will lock the extension rack bar 7 against movement in either direction. As either spring catch 21 or 21 is released, the handle 13 may have swinging movement in one direction or the other, and when both catches are re leased, the handle may be freely swung in either direction, it being understood that any swinging movement of the handle 13 will cause the teeth of the arcuated rack 19 to transmit movement to the toothed wheel 16 and in consequence to the extension rack bar 7.
lVhile I have herein shown and described only one specific form of my invention, it y will be understood that the member 1 might be constructed of two portions arranged in a varied manner, that the arcuated rack might be disposed in a varied relation with the remaining parts, and that other changes and modifications might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to be limited to the exact disclosure but only to such points as may be set forth in the appended claims. i
I claim 1. A wrench comprising a fixed jaw member having a casing formed as a part thereof, an adjustable jaw member having an extension bar mounted to be capable or" move ment into and extension from said case, a handle pivotally mounted on the fixed jaw member, means to be actuated upon swinging of the handle to move said movable jaw to its adjusted position, and means to hold the handle in a, fixed relation to retain the setting of the movable jaw.
2. A wrench comprising a jaw member having a case formed as a part thereof,.an adjustable jaw member having an extension rack bar formed as a part thereof, and received in said case to be capable of endwise movement, a toothed wheel mounted in the case with the teeth thereof in engagement with the teeth of the extension rack bar, means to turn said toothed wheel to cause movement of the adjustable jaw to the proper relation, and means carried by the means arranged to turn said toothed Wheel and arranged to hold said means against displacement when the proper adjustment of the movable jaw has been attained.
3. A wrench comprising a jaw having a case formed as a part thereof, a movable jaw provided with an extension rack bar mounted in said case to be capable of endwise movement, a toothed wheel mounted in the case with the teeth thereof in engage ment with the teeth of the extension rack bar, a handle pivotally mounted on the case, and an arcuated rack carried by said handle in engagement with the teeth of the wheel in such relation that as the handle is swung the wheel is turned to cause movement of the extension rack bar and in consequence adjustment of the adjustable jaw.
4. A wrench comprising a fixed jaw, an adjustable jaw having an extension rack bar formed as a part thereof, friction rolls with which said rack bar has engagement, toothed wheels mounted on the fixed jaw with the teeth thereof in engagement with the teeth of the rack bar, a handle pivotally mounted on said fixed jaw, an arcuated rack carried by said handle with the teeth thereof in engagement with the teeth of one of said wheels, said parts being so arranged that as the handle is swung the toothed wheel is turned to cause movement of the extension rack bar and consequently of the adjustable aw, and means to hold the parts in the proper adjusted relation.
5. A wrench comprising afixed jaw, an adjustable jaw having an extension rack bar formed as a part thereof, friction rolls with which said racl; bar has engagement, toothed wheels mounted on the fixed jaw with the teeth thereof in engagement with the teeth of the rack bar, a handle pivotally mounted on said fixed jaw, an arcuated rack carried by said handle with the teeth thereof in engagement with the teeth of one of said wheels, said parts being so arranged that as the handle is swung the toothed wheel is turned to cause movement of the extension rack bar and consequently of the adjustable jaw, means to indicate by the relative positioning of the handle the width of extension of the j aws, and means to hold the handle in the adjusted relation to maintain the fixed adjustment of the jaw.
