GEARING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1917.
Application led January 30, 1912. Serial No. 674,340.
To all whom z'zf may concern.-
Be it known that l, PHILIP H. Nicklaus,l
which the wind wheel may be rendered inoperative.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a windmill in which the driving shafts for the pump or other mechanism to which power is to be applied can be disconnected from the transmission gearing by the operation of a bell crank lever connected thereto.
Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use and readily operated.
With the above and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described7 claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved windmill. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the wind mill shown in Fig. 1, certain of the parts being shown in elevation. Fig.- l is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4 1 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1. Y
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference .throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generally my improved windmill which consists of a base 11 from the opposite corners of which rise a plurality of upwardly extending bars or uprights 12 connected at their converged terminals by a plate 13 formed with a central opening 14 for a purpose to be later disclosed. The uprights 12 are connected at intervals throughout their lengths by braces 15 and upon the lower of these said braces is journaled in suitable bearings a drive shaft 16 carrying a series of drive pulleys 17 over which belts are passed for the purpose of driving machinery not shown in the drawings.
A pair of stub .shafts 18 are located upon the opposite sides of the windmill substantially intermediate the uprights 12 and are supported in bearings carried bythe braces 15 intermediate the ends thereof. Beveled pinions 19 are loosely mounted upon the inner ends of the shafts 18 while secured to these said pinions and extending outwardly therefrom aresleeves 20 slidable upon the shafts 18 and provided at their free terminals with circumscribing flanges 21 adapted for engagement with bell crank levers 23, and each of these bell crank levers is mounted adjacent the journal of oneof the shafts 18 to provide a means whereby when the flexible members 24 are attached to their freeA ends and operated, the sleeves 20 will be slid longitudinally of tlie shafts 18. Springs 25 surround the shafts 18 and engage the adjacent ends of the sleeves 20 serving to normally force the pinions 19 to the inner extremity of their movement.
A stub shaft 26 is journaled below one of the shafts 18 and has keyed thereon a sprocket wheel 27 connected by a chain 28 to a .sprocket wheel 28 secured to one side of one of the pinions 19. TheV shaft 26 has keyed to its inner end a disk 28a which is operatively connected to the pump rod 29 causing its operation upon the rotation of the shaft 26 to be driven by the sprocket wheels 27 and 28 and chain 28. A sprocket wheel 30 is splined to the other of thelshafts 18 and is connected through the-medium of a chain 31 to a similar sprocket wheel 32 mounted upon the drive shaft 16 thereby causing the rotation of the latter. Y
A spider 33 has the terminals of its legs connected to the uprights 12 adjacent their upper extremities while its centrally apertured body portion is connected to the plate 13 by a plurality of brace rods 34. A hollow shaft 35 is journale'd in this spider 33 and passes through the opening 14E located in the plate 13. lThe lower end of the shaft 35 is provided at its lower end with a ball race 36 adapted to engage the ball bearings 37 located in a ball race 38 formed in the upper end of a supporting member 39 which is secured to the uprights 12.
From the foregoing disclosures taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be manifest that a device of the nature described is provided which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
In combination, a shaft, a gear on said shaft, a second shaft, a sleeve slidably mounted on the second shaft, a gear carried by said sleeve and adapted to mesh with the first mentioned gear when in one position and to be free from said first gear in a second position, a. collar on said sleeve, Va collar on the second shaft, a. spring interposed between the collars and urging said sleeve into position to bring the second gear into mosh with the first gear, a bell crank lever fulcrumed adjacent said sleeve collar and having a downwardly extending arm bearing against said sleeve collar on the side opposite the spring, and a pull rod connected to the other arm of the lever.
In testimony whereof, I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP H. NICKELS.
