MAIL-BAG-DELIVERY APPARATUS.,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 16, 1917;4
Application filed August 2, 1916. Serial No. 112,819.
To @ZZ lwhom t may concern Be it known that I, BEN KAnoI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Green and State of lisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mail-Bag-Delivery Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mail bag delivery apparatus whereby mail bags may be delivered from a moving train to a station and from the station to the moving train simultaneously.
ln carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide mail bag delivery apparatus of the class described wherein the mail bag carriers on the train' and at the station. respectively will be locked in delivery position and automatically released as the train passes the station and delivered from the station to the train and from the train to the station without necessitating the stopping of the train.
1t is also my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of mail bag delivery apparatus of the class described and provide apparatus wherein the component parts will be so arranged and correlated as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum and enable access to be had thereto for the purposes of cleaning and repairing.
`With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the complementary devices carried by the train and at the station respectively. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of one of the devices. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View therethrough showing the locking mechanism., Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view through the same. Fig. G is a longitudinal sectional view showing the parts in inactive position. Fig. 7 is an enlarged perspective view of the carrier.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1, 1 designate complementary devices of the apparatus arranged upon the train and at the station respectively. The train carried device comprises a. base plate 2 suitably fastened to one side of the doorway of the car and having the outer face thereof provided with outwardly extending segmental plates' 3 spaced apart in parallelism and arranged one above the other. Pivoted between the plates 3 at the center of the latter is one end of an arm 4 capable of swinging movement to a position outwardly of the car at right angles thereto and to a position within the car. Formed in the plates 3 are alining holes 5, while formed in the arm 4l is a hole 6 adapted to aline interchangeably with the holes 3 to receive a pin 7 whereby the arm may be held in adjusted position. Fastened to the lower' edge of the arm 4 at the upper end thereof is a block 8 preferably set into the arm and having the ends projecting beyond the respective sides of the arm and formed in the projecting ends of the block S are opening's 9. Passed through the arm stand the `block 8 is a vertical pivot bolt 10 and `pivoted upon the lower end of the Vbolt 10 is a bar 11 capable of swinging movement relatively to the arm, and adapted, when the arm is in active position, that is, at right angles to the car, to be swung to a position at rightangles to the arm and, when the arm is in inactive position, that is, within the car, to be swung to a position parallel with the arm. Fastened to the respective sides of the bar 11 atl one side of the arm el are plates 12 depending from the bar 11 and pivoted between the plates 12 is a lever 13 depending from the bar 11 and having the upper end formed with 'a bill lt engaging one extremity of a horizontal iinger 15 pivoted between its ends between the Vplates 12. The other end of the finger 15 is adapted to. engage a shoulder 16 formed on a locking disk 17 rotatably mounted between the plates 12, and this disk 17 is formed with a transverse groove 18 in the periphery thereof that alines with alining grooves 19 formed in the lower edges 0f the plat-es when the shoulder 1G on the disk is engaged by the adjacent end of the linger 15. Secured to the lower edge of the bar 11 at the side of the lever 13 opposite from the bill 14 is a stop block 2O designed to limit the movement of the lever in one-direction; and bearing upon the lever is a spring 21 that acts to held the lever in normal position, so that the linger 15 may lock the disk 17 against movement. The other end of the bar 11 is formed with an impact head 22, while mounted upon the upper edge of the lever between the impact head 22 and the arm is a notched bar 23.
24 designates a carrier ring that is adapted to be placed in the alining grooves 18 and 19 and held in such grooves by the disk 17 and the finger 15 and secured to the ring at opposite sides ot' the portion disposed within the alining grooves are transverse holding iingers 2G designates a mail bag carrier embodying a partially circular frame 27 including longitudinal side bars 2S and curved cross bars 29 connected to the side bars Q8, and a top bar 30 arranged above the side bars and at a point approximately centrally oi' the distance between the said side bars. rl`his top bar 30 is 'connected to the side bars by means of straps 31 and curved arms 32 formed integral with the end cross bars v). Secured to the top bar BO at a point centrally thereof is a block 33 and through this block the ring' 2l is passed.
Secured to the lower portion ot the lever 1?) is a flag The device arranged at the station is identica] in construction to the device carried by the train except that the arm 4f. is spaced apart from the bar 11 in order that the car carried device may clear the station device.
In practice, when the car carried device and the station device are in delivery positions and the car passes the station, the impact head on the bar 11 ot the` train strikes the liag 3st on the lever 13 of the station device, thereby tiltingl the iingcr 15 to release the disk 1T so that the ring 2i released and drops onto th, notched bar 23 on the moving train, the holding linger "25 engaging` the. respective edges ot the notched bar to prevent swaying ot the ring and carrier. The same action takes place in the car carried device so that the ring and carrier on the car are delivered at the station.
The bar 11 is formed with an opening` adapted to aline with either one ol the openings S) in the block S, according to the position of the bar, to receive a pin 3G whereby the bar may be yheld stationary upon the arm.
lWhile I have herein shown and described the preferred form ot my invention by way ot' illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or coniine myself to the precise details ot construction herein described and delineated, as modiiication and variation may be made within the scope ot the claims and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
