Be it known that I, \VALTER F. VAN GUYsLING, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Albany, Albany county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force-Feed Lubricators, of which the following is a specification, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. r 2
My invention relates to'improvements in automatic lubricators of the type in which the oil or lubricant is forcibly fed to the machine to which it is applied by the movement of the machine itself and its object is to provide a simple and effective device which is adapted to supply the oil positively in variable quantities automatically regulated by the speed of the machine receiving the oil.
Another object is to so arrange the parts that a new supply of oil may be put in readily and to provide a positively-acting automatic stop which will bring the device to rest when the supply of lubricant is substantially exhausted.
These and other objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which I will describe my invention, the novel features of which will be set forthin appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of an ape paratus which embodies the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of a part of the same device, the section'being taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my improved lubricator with portions broken away to more clearly illustrate some of the details of its construction. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the device, the section being taken 'on the line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional planview on a larger scale of the mechanism, the section in this figure being taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the oil container and Fig. 7 is a plan view of a screw head on which the base of the container rests. This is constructed with flanges 11 by means of which the device may be attached to the machine withwhich it is to be used, such for example, as a steam locomotive. This frame comprises a rectangular base 12' and two'upright portions 13 which are integrally united at thetop by apart 14. In the center of this part 14 is a tubularmember 15 to the upper end ofwhioh an oil discharge pipe may be connected, and the lower part of which is enlarged to form a piston. A cup leather 16 is held 'on this pistonby a part 17 which is threaded into the piston and this part con tains a check valve 18.
-The base of the frame is bored out to receive an internally-threaded collar 20, the upper part of which is enlarged to form a shoulder which prevents its downward movement and under this shoulder are balls 7 21 which form ananti-friction bearing. A ratchet disk 22 is affixed to the lower end of collar 20 which projects below the base 12 for the purpose of receiving it. This ratchet disk 22 is provided with handles 23 by means'of which it may be manipulated.
I 24 is a screw, which engages the threads of collar 20. The upper end of screw 24 is provided with a square flat head 25at one corner of which is a screw 26 and at the opposite corner a slot 27.

This base is providedwith a screw 32 which fitsinto the slot 27; and at its opposite corner is a slot 33 intowhich screw 26 fits. One'side of this base projects as at 34 and this projecting portion is offset as shown in Fig. .6 to form a shoulder 35,'the purpose of which will be fully described hereinafter. j
The central portion of the frame base 12 is extended on the side opposite flanges 11 to form a lug 40 on which is supported a heavy bracket 41. A heavy stud 42 and its nuts 43 serve to afiix this bracket to the lug, and its protruding end serves as a bearing for the hub 44 of a ratchet disk 45 and for a pawl carrier 50. A spring wire 46 fits in a groove in the periphery of the disk 45. One
end of this wire is secured to a hub 47 which 7 preventing the rotation of the disk 45 in one direction and yet, allowing it to be rotated in the other direction.
The pawl carrier 50 on stud 42 has a side lug 51, to which is secured a rod 52 which is rocked about the axis of the stud 42 by a rod 53 which is connected to be reciprocated by some moving part of the engine or other apparatus to which the lubricant is to be supplied. On the rod 52 is a pawl 54 which is freely supported on the rod 52. This pawl carrier is carried up over the pawl as at 55 and a spring 56 between the pawl and the pawl carrier presses the pawl into engagement with the teeth on disk 45. The hub 44 of the disk 45 is constructed to form an eccentric on which is loosely supported another pawl 60 which engages the teeth on the top of ratchet disk 22. On the end of pawl 60 is an offset projection 61 (Fig. 5). Another pawl 62 with an offset projection 63 is mounted on a pin 64 projecting through the bracket 41. This pawl also engages the teeth on the top of the ratchet disk 22.

The upper part of rod 70 passes through a slot in the bottom of a guide bracket 73 afliXed toone of the frame arms 13and its upper end 7 4 projects; through a slot in the side of guide bracket 73 intothe path of movement of the j V shoulder 35 of the base of the oil chamber.
7 5 is a bell crank lever which is pivoted to casing 10 at 76 and the other end of which is a weight'77. It is also provided with a lug 77 projecting from its pivoted hub oppositely from weight 77. Pin 78 projects from the bell crank lever into a loop 79 formed by a bendin the rod 70. A depression is formed between the lug 77 of the bell crank lever and the end of its arm 75 into which is pressed a latch 80 which is slidably mounted in a lug 81 projecting from the frame 10, by means of a spring 82. This apparatus may be affixed to one or the other side of a device to be lubricated, such for example as a steam locomotive, instead of making right and left hand lubricators. I have so designed the device that the bracket 41 may be removed and another one aflixed to the lug 40 on the opposite side thereof. The driving parts, such as are shown in Fig. 5 may then be changed to provide for the device being driven from the opposite side so that the main parts of the apparatus may be used for either a right or left hand drive.
The operation of this apparatus is as follows: The ratchet disk 22 is turned by its handles 23 until its head seats on the base portion 12 of frame 10. When in this position the piston and its attached parts will be clear of the cylinder 36 and by grasping the projection 34 the oil receptacle may be removed laterally. After it is filled with oil, grease or other desired material it is slid back again into place. The screws 26 and 32 and the slots 33 and 27 with which they respectively engage, serve to position the cylindrical oil chamber in alinement with the piston 17. The square head 25 of the screw and the rectangular base 31 of the oil receptacle fit upright portions 13-13 of the frame in such av way as to hold the screw 24 from turning. Now as the disk 22 and its connected nut-like collar are rotated to raise the screw 20, the cylindrical receptacle 30 is pushed up over the cup leather 16 on piston 15 and this cylinder and cup leather have an oil-tight fit. N ow as the machine to which the lubricator is connected runs, and the rod 52 is rocked thereby, the pawl 54 will rotate disk 45 step by stepv by its engagement with the teeth on the disk. For each revolution of the disk 45 thepawl 60, on account of its being supported on the eccentric hub 44 of the disk, will be moved forward and back and willimpart a partial rotation to the ratchet disk 22, the amount of this rotation being dependent upon the space between the teeth on'disk 22. The pawl 62 is provided to prevent the disk 22 from moving backward. This will turn the nut-like collar 20 and move the screw 42 and the oil receptacle which is on it upwardly. Thus the oil will be forced out gradually at a rate proportional to that of the machine to which the lubricator is applied. The end 74 of rod 70 is in alinement with the shoulder 35 and as the oil chamber is moved upwardly this shoulder will in time engage the rod 70 and force it too upwardly. The loop 79 will swing the bell-crank lever about its pivot 76 until its heavy arm 7 7 passes over its vertical position after which it will fall over into a position inclined in the-opposite direction to the incline'in which it is shown in Fig. 3. In doing this it will raise the rod 70 farther and this in turn will cause its lower end 72 to engage pawl projections 61 and 63 and to raise the pawls 60 and 62 out of further engagement with the ratchet disk 22 and thereby stop further action of the threaded collar 20 on screw 24, and thus stop the discharge of lubricant. These parts are so proportioned and arranged that this antomatic stopping will occur at about the time the oil in the reservoir or chamber has become exhausted.
. It is to be noted that the movement of the bell-crank lever is opposed by the latch 80, but as its movement is accomplished by the application of a considerable amount of force, this latch will be depressed until the lug 7 7 A passes over it. This is important as in some cases, such for example when the device is applied to a locomotive, the action of the lubricator is liable to be stopped accidentally by the jarring of the locomotive, but this device positively prevents such accidental stopping.
To refill the reservoir no pipes need be disconnected butthe operator simply turns the disk 22 in the direction opposite to that in which it has been driven, until the head of screw 24 abuts against the collar 20 when the oil receptacle is again in position to be removed.
The apparatus shown and described is illustrative of my invention although variations in construction may be made within the scope of the invention, and I intend no limitations other than those imposed by the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, a stationary piston supported thereby, an internally threaded collar in said frame arranged to be rotated by the movement of the machine to which the lubricator is to be applied, a screw passing through the collar, an oil receptacle and cooperating means for holding said receptacle on said screw in alinement with said piston.
2. A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, a stationary piston supported thereby, an internally threaded collar in said frame arranged to be rotated by the movement of the machine to which the lubricator is to be applied, a screw passing through the collar, said screw having a head guided by the frame and arranged to prevent the screw from turning, an oil receptacle having a 7 base, and cooperating means for holding said base and said screw head together to hold the oil receptacle in alinement with said piston.
3. A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, a stationary piston supported thereby, an internally threaded collar in said frame arranged to be rotated by the movement of a machine to which the lubricator is to be applied, a screw passing through the collar, said screw having a flat rectangular head, an oil receptacle having a rectangular base fitting onto said screw head, a screw projecting from the screw head and a slot provided in said base for receiving said screw, a similar screw projecting from said base and a slot in screw head provided to receive the latter screw, said screws and slots being arranged to hold the receptacle in alinement with said piston.

A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, a stationary piston supported thereby, an internally threaded collar in said frame arranged to be rotated by the movement of a machine to which the lubricator is to be applied, a screw passing through the collar, said screw having a flat rectangular head, an oil receptacle having a rectangular base fitting onto said screw head, a screw pro ectmg from the screw head and a slot provided in said base for recelvlng said screw, a similar screw projecting from saidportions and an intermediate portion form ing a-stationary hollow piston, an internally threaded collar in said base portion, driving 1 mechanism connected to rotate said collar, a screw passing through said collar, said screw having a head fitted between the parallel portions of the frame, an oil receptacle having a base fitted between the parallel side portions of the frame, and means for attaching said receptacle to said screw head in alinement with said piston. A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, having a base portion, parallel side portions and an intermediate portion forming a hollow piston, an internally threaded collar in said base portion, driving mecha nism connected to rotate said collar, a screw passing through said collar, said screw having a rectangular head fitted between the parallel side portions of the frame, an oil receptacle having a rectangular projecting base guided by said frame and constructed with means for connecting it with said screw head in alinement with the piston, and means engaged by said projecting base for automatically disconnecting said driving mechanism from the collar.

A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, a stationary piston supported there by, an internally threaded collar in said frame arranged to be rotated by the move. ment of a machine to which the lubricator is to be applied, a screw passing through the collar, anoil receptacle provided with means for securing it to the screw in alinement with the piston, means engaged by said receptacle for automatically stopping the rotation of said collar, and a yieldable lock for said stopping means.

A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, having a base portion, parallel side portions and an intermediate stationary portion forming a hollow piston, an internally threaded collar in said base portion, a driving mechanism connected to rotate said collar, a screw passing through said collar, an oil receptacle having a rectangular projecting base guided by said frame and constructed with means for securing the receptacle to the screw in alinement with the piston, means engaged by said projecting base for automatically disconnecting said driving mechanism from the collar and a yieldable lock for said disconnecting means.

A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, having a base portion, parallel side portions and an intermediate stationary portion forming a hollow piston, an internally threaded collar in said base portion, a driving mechanism comprising a ratchet disk attached to said collar and a pawl adapted to engage said disk, a screw passing through said collar, said screw having a rectangular head guided by said frame, an oil receptacle fitting the piston and having a rectangular projecting base guided between the side portions of the frame and constructed with means for securing the receptacle to the screw head in alinement with the piston, a weighted lever having a lost motion connection with said pawl, a portion of the oil receptacle base being arranged to move said lever to disengage the pawl, and a spring pressed latch to releasably hold said lever.

A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, having a base portion, parallel side portions and an intermediate stationary portion forming a hollow piston, an internally threaded collar in said base portion, a driving mechanism comprising a ratchet disk attached tosaid collar and pawls adapted to engage said disk, means for actuating one of said pawls by the movement of a machine to which the lubricator is to be applied, ascrew passing through said collar,
said screw having a head, an oil receptacle fitting said piston and having a base adapted to be secured to said screw head and to be guided betweenthe side portions of the frame, a rod having a portion projecting into the path of movement of said oil receptacle, and another portion projecting under the pawls, andmeans for augmenting the movement imparted to said rod by the receptacle.

A force feed lubricator comprising a frame, having a base portion, parallel side portions and an intermediate stationary portion forming a hollow piston, an internally threaded collar in said base portion a driving mechanism comprising a ratchet disk attached to said collar and pawls adapted to engage said disk, means for actuating one of said pawls by the movement of a machine to which the lubricator is to be applied, a screw passing through said collar, said screw naving a head, an oil receptacle fitting said piston and having a base adapted to be secured to said screw head in alinement with the piston, and to be guided between the side portions of the frame, a weighted bell crank lever, a rod connected with said lever having a portion projecting into the path of movement of said oil receptacle base, and another portion projecting under the pawls, and a spring pressed latch to releasably hold said weighted lever.
