To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY BITTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Oil-Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to mechanical 011 pumps for use in oiling engines and the like, and capable of forcing oil against high pressure. In pumps of this nature, it is highly desirable to have the various parts accessible and of the highest mechanical efficiency.
It is the object of my invention to provide an oil pump in which the various pumping units are secured complete to the lid of the oil box, so that by removing the lid all of the parts of the pump are removed also.
It is also the object of my invention to looate the checks for the force pump so that they are above the lid and easily accessible, and to provide a sight feed compact with the body of each unit.
I also have as an object the adjustability of the amount of feed through the sight, and
the locating of the driving means for the pump in the oil box, with the pump itself above the lid of the box, so that its checks are accessible as above stated.
These various objects and other advantages to be noted I accomplish by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is atop plan view of the pump, showing one unit only for purposes of clearness. Fig. 2 is a left side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4, 4c, of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5, 5, of Fig. l.

The oil box has a bottom 1 and sides 2, the same being cut off at an angle at 3 on one corner for mounting an indicator gage. An opening (not shown) isformed in the base of this out 01f portion, communicating with the interior of the box, and set over it is a glass tube 5 for the indicator gage. The box has a lid 6 which is screwed down tight on the sides thereof and extends over the cut off corner. A screw 5 set into the lid at this corner projects down into the tube 5 and holds it in place. The height of the oil in the-gage will then indicate the height of the oil in the oil box.
Housings 7, 8, for j ournaling the driving shaft of the pumps are mounted in the sides of the box in any desired manner, and the shaft 9 is mounted in these journal hous ings. The housing at the left extends outwardly at 8? and the shaft protrudes at this end, the journal being packed in the customary manner at 10.
A bearing sleeve 11 is tightly mounted on the portion 8 of the shaft housing and a ratchet gear 12 is loosely mounted thereon outside of the sleeve. A cross member 13 on the outer face of this ratchet is secured tightly to the end of the driving shaft by a nut 14. The shaft passes through the cross member and the nut screws onto the shaft and abuts against the cross member, thereby holding the parts together.
Mounted on a bracket 15 secured to the side of the box is a spring stop-pawl 16 which enforces movement of the gear 12 in but one direction, and on the sleeve is mounted a rocker arm 17 on which is mounted at 18 a spring pawl 19 which meshes with the gear. A handle 20 inserted into the end of this rocker is coupled up to some reciprocating part of the engine mechanism, and as the rocker is moved the gear will be rotated in one direction, thereby rotating the driving shaft.
The box is shown as being quite narrow and but one pumping unit isv shown, which will now be described. It is desired to note that the widening of the box and the further extending of the driving shaft will permit as many separate pumping units as may be desired to be mounted over and be driven by the shaft.
The mechanism will first be described for elevating the oil from the box into the chamber at the base of the sight feed, it being understood that the pump forces the oil from thence out into the desired part to be oiled.
At either side of the pump plunger opening, in the lid of the box, are cast with the lid the depending arms 21, 21. These arms have lugs 22, 22, at each side, and a casting a check 35 in the opening.

23 is provided having corresponding arms 24, 24, whose lugs are screwed to the lugs 22, thereby forming a frame "or housing for an eccentric yoke 'or strap 25. The eccentric shaft 26 is journaled between the two sets of arms forming this housing, and on this shaft is mounted and secured by a .pin 27 the eccentric 27, which lies inside of the eccentric strap 25. A gear 28 is moun'te'do'n the extended end of the shaft 26, and this gem is arranged to mesh with a gear29 on the driving shaft 9 of the pump. WVhen further units are desired, they are strung along on the eccentric shaft as desired,using the single set ofge'ars 28, 29, and'the common driving shaft 9 for driving the eccentric shaft.

Mounted on the'top of the lid is a casting forming the casing for the force pump mechanism. This casing has a base 46 which'is secured to th'e top at one side by the 'stufling "box 47 which screws into the lid.
The eccentric strap heretofore mentioned has connected to its upper side the pump rod '48, and this red extends up through the stufling box-47. The other end of the base 46 has a scr'e'wthre'aded tubular extension '49 that passes through the lid, and "is held in place by a nut 49 that-is screwed onto it beneath the lid.

The inlet to this chamber is closed by a ball check 61, and the upper end of the chamber is closed by a ball check 62. A passageway 63 from this chamber leads into the vertical chamber 64, within which reciprocates the pump rod 48, said chamber also serving as a guide for the rod, as its motion will not carry its end beyond the chamber. The chamber is broadened at 6% at its base and the stuflingbox 65 is provided for packing the entrance of the rod into the chamber. A passageway 66 from the top of this chamber communicates with the outlet 67 also formed in the casting, the same having in its end any desired union coupling 68. A ball check 7 0 closes the passageway 66 at the top and a screw plug 69 closes the aperture in the casting opening into the said passageway.
It is obvious from the above that the force pump rod when it is moved downwardly draws oil by the checks 61 and 62 and into the pump chamber. When it is moved upwardly, it forces the oil out of the passageway 66 by the check therein and into the outlet pipe.
Instead of using ball checks 62 and 7 0, in many instances I prefer to employ valve disks 62 and 7 0 as shown in Fig. 7 with a spring 81 for the disk valve 7 0 With this construction, a tight seat can be readily obtained, and a very slight clearance provided for the lift of the valves.
The check 50 at the base of the trunk helps to prevent sucking back and bubbling through the sight feed tube. The two checks in the chamber 59 that lead directly to the force pump give ample protection against pumping air back into the sight feed, as the force pump has a greater stroke than is necessary to handle the oil that falls under reduced conditions of feed into the sight feed reservoir.
All the pumps are vertical, and the drive of the main force pump is in direct line with the eccentric. The ball checks of this upper pump are all outside of the oil reservoir and immediately accessible, and the various features of advantage in mounting of parts as stated in the introductory matter, fully accomplished.
Various modifications of structure will, of course, be possible without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is not de sired that the claims be limited to precise structure where the same is not definitely called for.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, mechanism mounted on the lid and depending into the reservoir for raising oil to a sight feed, a sight feed mounted on the top of the lid, and a force pump mounted on top of the lid, to force the oil that falls from said feed into the machine to be lubricated.
2. In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, mechanism mounted on the lid and depending into the reservoir for raising oil to a sight feed, a sight feed mounted on the top of the lid, and a force pump mounted on the top of the lid, and means for actuating the force pump mounted on the lid and depending therefrom, said pump having a vertically reciprocating rod connected to the said means.
In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, mechanism mounted on the lid and depending into the reservoir for raising oil to a sight feed, a sight feed mounted on the top of the lid, and a force pump mounted on the top of the lid, and means for actuating the force pump mounted on the lid and depending therefrom, said pump having a vertically reciprocating rod connected to the said means, a cross shaft in said reservoir and separable connection from said shaft to said actuating means.

5. In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, a force pump mounted on top of said lid, means in the reservoir for raising oil to said pump, said pump having a pump rod and means in the reservoir for actuating said rod.

In a force feed lubricator, an oil reser-' voir, a lid therefor, a sight feed mounted on the lid, and a force pump mounted on said lid, said pump having a vertical chamber, and a vertically reciprocating rod, and valves arranged so that the rod forces oil out of the pump chamber upon its upward stroke.
7 In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, an oil trunk mounted outside of said reservoir, means for raising oil into said trunk, a sight feed at the end of said trunk, and a force pump having a casing unitary with said trunk, and having a rod and valves arranged to force oil out upon an upward movement of the rod.

In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, a force pump mounted on top of said lid, means in the reservoir for raising oil to said pump, said pump having a pump rod, and means in the reservoir for actuating said rod, and a pump chamber for said pump, an outlet valve for said chamber, the same being located above said chamber.

In a force-feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, an oil trunk mounted on said lid, means for raising oil into said trunk, a sight feed mounted at the end of the trunk, and a force pump having a casing unitary with the trunk, said pump having a rod for the pump and means for actuating the same.

In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, an oil trunk mounted on said lid, means for raising oil into said trunk, a sight feed mounted at the end of the trunk, and a force pump having a casing unitary With the trunk, said pump having a rod and means for actuating the said rod mounted on the lid and depending there from into the reservoir.

In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, a force pump mounted on the lid, same having a rod depending into the reservoir, an eccentric mechanism suspended from the lid into the reservoir for actuating the rod, a driving shaft in the reservoir and separable connection therefrom to the eccentric mechanism. 7

In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, a forcepump mounted on the lid, same having a rod depending into the reservoir, an eccentric mechanism suspended from the lid into the reservoir for actuating the rod, a driving shaft in the reservoir and separable connection therefrom to the eccentric mechanism, a sight feed into said pump and means connected to said eccentric mechanism for raislng oil from the reservoir into the sight feed.

In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, a force pump mounted on the lid, same having a rod depending into the reservoir, an eccentric mechanism suspended from the ,lid into the reservoir for actuating the rod, a driving shaft in the reservoir, a gear on the shaft andva gear on the eccentric mechanism to mesh therewith.

Ina force feed ,lubricator an oil reser- .voir, a lid therefor, an eccentric mechanism suspended from the lid, a sight feed for said lubricator, a member suspended from the lid having a pump chamber therein, a passageway from the chamber to the. sight feed, and, a plunger for said pump chamber adjustably connected to the eccentric mechanism.
15. In a force feed lubricator, an oil reservoir, a lid therefor, an eccentric mechanism suspended from the lid, a sight feed for said lubricator, a member suspended from the lid having a pump chamber therein, pas- ,sageways from the chamber to the sight HENRY BITTER.
