FASTENER FOR STERILIZEIt-DOORS.
To all whom it ma 3 concern Be it known that I, JOHN MARION L11- 'i.-\Y, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Van Nest, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Sterilizer-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the doors for sterilizers, pasteurizers and the like, and its novelty consists in the construction and adaptation of the parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a sterilizer or similar container adapted to be supplied with fluid under pressure, with a hinged closing device or door which can be made fluid-tight by applying to the rim of the door at a plurality of positions, preferably symmetrically arranged, pressure devices which will promote a permanent contact between the door and the edge of the apparatus at the opening which it is adapted to close, and which device can yet be readily manipulated by hand. In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device of the kind' described, provided with a preferred form of my invention, the levers being shown in a locked position; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with a hand-wheel removed and'the levers being shown in an unlocked position; Fig. 3 is a central enlarged transverse section on the plane of the line 33 in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the parts in position when the pressure of the locking levers has been released; Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the plane of the line 55 in Fig. 3; and Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are details illustratingthe different relative positions of the lever carrier controlling detent with respect to the central stud bolt.
In the drawings, 10 represents the terminal rim of the sterilizer, which is provided with an inturned annular flange ll'having a rearwardly facing surface 12. The rim back of the flange 11 is provided with a suitable recess in which is a continuous annular packing 13 which may be of rubber or other suitable compressible material.

r The stud bolt 25 is expanded at 26 and provided with a radially projecting arm 27 having a terminal detent 28. It is provided beyond the portion 26 with an extension 29 externally threaded with a right-hand thread in the illustrated device.
30 1s a hand-wheel of any suitable size and shape provided with spokes 31 and havmg a central hollow hub 32, terminating in an inwardly projecting threaded annular flange 33 adapted to engage the threads on the extenslon 29 of the stud bolt 25, so that the rotation of, the hand-wheel will move the flange 33 along the extension of such stud bolt.
The annular flange 33 is externally terminates at its inner end in a ball 41 adapted to be retained between the sockets formed in the two plates 42 and 43 of a lever or bolt carrier, which has an internally threaded boss indicated at 44 and is provided with threads adapted to engage the external series of threads of the flange 33 of the hub 32 of the hand wheel. The two disk shaped plates 42 and 43 are united together by any suitable means, for instance, screws indicated at 46, and the plate 43 is also provided with inwardly projecting lugs 47 and 48, with a recess between them indicated at 50 and which'is adapted to engage the detent 28 at a proper time in the operation of the device. The lug 47 is also provided with an inwardly projecting stop 51 adapted to be engaged by the detent 28 during another part of the operation of the device. I
Each of the arms 40 is provided with a guide and retaining device, each comprising two outwardly projecting revolving members indicated at 52 and 53 respectively, between which the lever is adapted to pass and which rollers revolve on pins (not shown) The door is alsov 67 at the upper and lower edges of the hinge,
.which are secured to the flange 23, the pins being united by a strip or bridge 54 secured in place by suitable means, as screws indicated at 55.
- The door is'suspended on a subframe comprising two members 60 and 61 with suitable transverse braces 62 and 63, and a member 64 which is secured to the plate of the door itself. The two members 60 and 61 terminate in bosses'indicated at 65 through which there is adapted to pass the pintle of the hinge indicated at 66. The cooperating hinge members comprise a forked member and each fork is provided with a common inwardly extending member 68 adapted to be received by a cylindrical support 69 secured to the outer part of the sterilizer, the member 68 being permitted to have a limited movement. longitudinally with respectis released, the sliding members 68 are moved to their rearward position .within the supports 69.
The operation of the devlce is as follows:
In Figs. 1 and 3, the parts are in the position shown when the door is closed and firmly held in position by means of the series. of levers. Let it be supposed that it is now desired to unlock the door to gain access to the interior of the sterilizer; the handwheel is rotated anticlockwise. This moves the annular flange 33 outwardly along the extension 29 of the stud bolt 25, and such movement moves the lever carrier outward and this in turn acting upon the rounded ends 41, 41 of each lever, changes the angle of inclination of each of the levers, thereby releasing the pressure between the inner surface 12 of the annular flange 11 and the outer surface of the flange 23. When this has been accomplished, each lever 40 has moved farther outwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3 and has assumed the posi tion shown in Fig. 4 in which it has a less area of contact with the surface 12. In the meantime, the continued rotation of the hand wheel has caused a movement of the lever carrier to take place with respect to the hub 32 because of the engagement of their contacting threaded portions, and the lever carrier moves from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig.4 and an annular flange 440 with which the boss 44 is provided has abutted against a shoulder 320 on the hub 32 and the further movement 'of the boss 44 with respect to the hub 32 is therefore prevented. The pressure upon the door has been released, but there is yet anengagement between the outer end of each-lever and the inner surface 12 ,of the above described, the lever carrier and the hand wheel rotate together and circularly move the entire series of levers at their inher ends througha comparatively small arc, Inovmg each of these levers from a relatlvely radial position with respect to the center of the door'and its outer circumference, to a position oblique to such radius and consequently withdrawing each of the levers from engagement with the inner surface 12 of the flange 11. This movement is facilitated by the fact that the rollers 52, and 53 constitute a roller bearing and aguide between each pair of which each lever rod radially moves and by which their direction of movement is controlled; This movement causes the levers to move from the positions in Fig. 1 to the positions shown in Fig. 2. After this movement has taken place, the door is pulled open by a pull on the hand wheel in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the stud bolt, and the door can then be swung uponits pintle.
The outward movement of the hand w-heel removes the slot 50' from the detent 28, and this movement continues until the detent entirely clears the slot and is in the position shown in Fig. 7 when the circular movement fof the lever carrier takes place and the levers are moved from their radial to their oblique position. The extent of the circular movement is limited by the contact of the detent 28 with the stop 51.
It will be noted that the hand wheel 30 and flange 33 constitute a lock or holding means for the levers or bolts, and that said hand wheel and flange are mounted on or carried by the stud 29, so that said stud may be defined as a lock carrier.
The purpose of the movable frame for the hinge is to permit of the movement of the levers from the position in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 3, when looking the door, without breaking the hinge, because when such movement takes place the whole door moves inwardly and the subframe, on which the hinge is mounted, moves inwardly also, in the same direction, and the hinge is not broken as would be the case if this leeway were not provided. I
It will be understood of course that the flange 11 need not be continuous, provided a sufiicient number of arcs are left to afi'oi'd bearing surfaces for the ends of the lever rods 40.
I claim: 1. Securing means for closures, comp-rising in combination with a closure, a bolt carrier and a lock carrier, one being internally, the other externally, threaded, a hub interposed between the two and havmg externally and internally threaded engagement therewith, a securing bolt for the closure operated by the bolt carrier, and a holder for the bolt engaged thereby.
2. Securing means for closures, comprising in combination with the closure having an outwardly projecting bolt externally threaded, holding means engaged by thebolt, a lever carrier adapted to surround the bolt and provided with a central boss internally threaded, a hub intermediate the bolt and the lever carrier and externally and internally threaded to engage simultaneously the threads of the bolt and the lever carrier.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a'series of radially arranged levers having terminal balls, of a carrier for the series comprising two plates each with registered recesses adapted to form sockets to retain such balls and means for securing the plates together and a hand wheel by which the levers may be moved circularly as a series at their socket ends, and a series of detents by which the levers are prevented from such circular movement at their outer ends.
4. In closure securing means, the combination with an outwardly flaring inturned annular rim, of a door substantially circular and of smaller diameter than said rim, and arranged within the rim, and a locking device by which the door is secured to the sterilizer, including a. member projecting from the door at right angles to its general surface, a lever carrier movable along said member, a series of levers radially arranged from the carrier and adapted to engage the rim to lock the door, and means for moving the lever carrier including a rotary member having a hub externally and internally threaded, one set of threads being adapted to engage the projecting member and the other set of threads the carrier.
5. In a device of the character described, a door, a series of levers, a carrier therefor comprising socket plates, means for moving the levers rectilinearly and circularly, in combination with means for preventing either movement until the other movement is completed.
6. In closure securing means, the combination with a door and a series of levers, of
a carrier to which one end ofeach of the levers 1s secured, means for movlng the levers circularly w1th the carrier, and means for moving the carrier in. a direction at right ing position and radially into a locked position, a lever carrier supported on the outwardly projecting member of the door and means for moving it circularly and longitudinally thereon in succession.
8. In closure securing means, the combination with a door having an outwardly projecting member, of a series of levers adapted'to be moved circularly into a looking position and radially into a locked position, a lever carrier supported on the outwardly projecting member of the door and means for moving it circularly and longitudinally thereon in succession, in combination with a detent on the projecting member and a device on the carrier which by their engagement prevent any circular movement of the carrier while it is being longitudinally moved.
9. In closure securing means, the combination with a door having an outwardly projecting member, of a series of levers adapted to be moved circularly into a looking position and radially into a locked position, a lever carrier supported on the outwardly projecting member of the door and tudinally thereon in succession, 1n combination with a detent on the projecting member and a device on the carrier which by their engagement prevent any circular movement of the carrier while it is being longitudinally moved, said detent and device being relatively movable to a disengaged relation to permit a limited circular movement of the carrier as soon as its longitudinal movement is arrested.
10. In closure securing means, the combiwardly projecting member of the door and means for moving it circularly and longitu-' dinally thereon in succession, lnc'luding a hand wheel having a threaded hub adapted to engage the'projecting member and the lever carrier simultaneously to move them at different rates of speed, whereby the movement of the carrier longitudinally isarrested after .a predetermined space has been covered and the continued'actuation of the Wheel then produces a circular movement of the same carrier.

In closure securing means, the combination with a door, of a series of locking levers therefor, and means for moving the levers circularly to a locking position and radially to a locked position, in combination with a hinge'for the door which permits of itslongitudinal movement as the levers are moved from the one position to the other.
