UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS C. BRASTOW AND ALPHONS M. ZWIEBEL, OF WILKESBARRE, ASSIGNORS TO L. B. FLANDERS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLANlNG-MACHINE ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,230, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that we, Louis C. BRAsrow and ALPHoNs M. ZwrEBEL, of Wilkesbarre, county of Luzerne, State of Pennsylvania, have invent-` ed Attachments for Planing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists of a device, too fully explained hereafter to need preliminary description, to be attached to a metal planing-machine for the purpose of nishing segmental objects.
Figure l is a perspective viewof the bed of a planing-machine with our attachment 5 Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of Fig. l 5 Fig. 3, a sectional view, illustrating a modification of our invention; and Fig. 4, a perspective diagram, illustrating another modification.
A is the traversing-bed of a planing-machine, there being on the under side of this bed the usual V-shaped ribs, adapted to similarly-shaped grooves on the base-p] ate, as in ordinary planingmachines.
The bed may be caused to reciprocate in its guides by any system of gearing and reversing mechanism employed in metal-planin g machines.
Above the bed A, and extending across the same, is a stationary frame, B, the legs of which are secured to the base-plate of the machine, and at a central point in this frame a vertical spindle, d, is arranged to turn, the lower end of the spindle, below the cross-bar of the frame, carrying a cog-wheel, D, the teeth of which are adapted to those of a rack, E, secured to the traversing bed, and arranged parallel with the ribs and guides of the same. Above the cross-bar of the frame, and to the-spindle d, is secured a horizontal face-plate, G, to which the object to be operated on is secured, the object consisting, in the present instance, of a double crank, H, the hub orcentral portion h of which it is desired to finish by the tool I of the planer.
This tool may be secured to the tool-box usually employed in machines of this class, and toowell known to those familiar with the construction of planing-machines to need illustration or explanation.
As the bed A reciprocates it must, through .the medium of the rack E and wheel D, cause the bed-plate G to turn backward and forward,
the extent to which the face-plate turns being commensurate with that of the movement of the bed, and this movement can be so regulated by the usual reversing mechanism that the y faceplate can be turned to any extent demanded by the segmental object to be finished by the tool.
In finishing the hub of the double crank H, for instance, the face-plate mustbe turned a little over half its circumference, in order that the desired segmental cut can be made by the tool.
When large and heavy objects are to be operated on the face-plate G may be steadied, in the manner shown in Fig. 3, by a circular V- shaped projection on its under side adapted to a corresponding V-shaped recess in the frame B. The latter may also be made of the. peculiar shape shown in Fig. 3, so as to receive the cogwheel cl and the stem d of the face-plate, which takes the place of the spindle cl and rests on a set-screw, c. The frame B when thus shaped serves as a reservoir for lubricating material, and the said frame is recessed on one side, in order to admit the rack E to the cog-wheel D. In place of the cog-wheel D a pulley, J, suitable for receiving a chain, cord, or belt, may, in some instances, be used; this chain taking the place of the rack, and being passed round the pulley, and having its ends secured to the bed, as shown in Fig. 4, the result of this arrangement, as regards the movement of the face-plate G, being precisely the same as that derived from the rack and wheel.
We claim as our invention- The within-described attachment, consisting of a stationary frame, B, secured so as to be detachable to the base-plate of a planing-machine, and carryingv a face-plate operated by the reciprocating bed through the medium of a rack, E, and wheel D, or equivalent mechanism, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS G. BRASTOW. ALPHON S M. ZWIEBEL.
