AMMUNITION-CHEST.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1917.
Application filed February 18, 1915. Serial No. 9,118.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLY FELLER, residing at Essen-on-the Ruhr, Germany, a citizen of the German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ammunition-Chests, of which the following is a specification.
The present inventionrelates to ammunition chests and the object of the invention is to provide such chests with a device, which permits the securing of ammunition of different length, as for instance, a complete round of cartridge and projectile or a proj ectile alone, in each pigeon hole of the chest intended to contain an ammunition unit.
In the accompanying drawing is shown, as an embodiment of the invention, a chest constructed to contain three ammunition units, as for instance shrapnel cartridge or cartridges with torpedo shells.
Figure 1 shows a vertical section of the chest and Fig. 2 a section along line 22 of Fi 1.
The chest A is provided with a lid A which is connected with the chest by means of hinges a", Fig. 2. The chest A has transoms B and O, in which cylindrical bearings b and 0 respectively, are pressed out. In these bearings the ammunition F G may rest with slight play. On the bottom a of the chest is attached a fiat liner E of rubber or the like, upon which the projectiles may rest with their flattened heads.
On the inside of the lid A are rigidly secured. two l 1-shaped bearing pieces H. With the free ends of the shanks of these bearing pieces, are linked three stirrups K, through the intermediary of studs Each stirrup K may be secured on the bearing piece H in two positions, displaced 180 relative to each other, by means of spring latches. These latter comprise projections m provided on flat springs M and notches 7L1 and 70 respectively for the projections. As shown in Fig. 1,'the flat springs M are either secured on a shank of the bearing pieces H, or on the shanks of the stirrup K. The notches b [62, for the projections m of the flat springs M, are therefore correspondingly provided either on the stirrups K or on the bearing pieces H. On both sides of the rung of each stirrup K, is secured a flat liner 70 of leather or the like, which has the function to rest against the base of the cartridge case.
If the stirrups K have the position illustrated in the drawing, wherein they are secured by means of the spring latches of, h or 73 respectively, two long cartridges with torpedo shells F and one short shrapnel cartridge G may be inserted in the chest.
The cartridges are then suspended between the stirrups K or the fiat liners 70 and the bottom liner E, When the lid A is closed.
Should for instance the pigeon hole situated to the left in Fig. 1 of the drawing serve to hold a shrapnel cartridge, the stirrup K in question is then to be turned 180 after the lid A has been opened. The projectlons m are then disengaged from the lower notches k and k while the flat springs are being tensioned. After completion of the above mentioned turning of the stirrup K, the projections m of the springs M snap into the upper notches 72, and 70 so that the stirrup is secured against turning in its new position. The described device consequently permits the inserting of either a long or a short ammunition unit, that is a projectile or a cartridge, in each pigeon hole of the chest.
I claim 1. An ammunition chest having a fixed abutment and an adjustable abutment for holding securely between them in axial direction ammunition of dilferent length.
2. An ammunition chest having a fixed abutment and a reversible abutment for holding securely between them in axial direction ammunition units of different length, there being also cylindrical bearings in the chest supporting the ammunition transversely with some play.
3. In an ammunition chest with fixed bottom and sides, a stirrup hinged in the chest, and means for securing said stirrupin either of two axially opposite positions, whereby ammunition units of difl'erent length may be suspended between said bottom and said stirrup, there being also cylindrical bearings in the chest supporting the ammunition transversely with some play.
4. In an ammunition chest with fixed bottom and sides'and a lid; a bearing piece attached under the lid, depending shanks on said bearing piece, a stirrup journaled at the free ends of said shanks, and means for securing said stirrup in either of two diametrically opposite positions, whereby ammunition units of dilferent length may be Q. r r 1,212,201
suspended between said bottom and said stirrup.
5. In an ammunition chest with fiXed bot-.
tom and sides and a lid; a bearing piece attached under the lid, depending "shanks on saidbearing piece, a stirrup journaled at the free ends of said shanks and constructed to have two positions 180 apart from each other, a snap latch between said stirrup and tom and sides and a lid; a bearing piece attached unden the lid, depending shanks on said bearing piece, a stirrup journaled at the free ends of said shanks and constructed to have tw positions 180 apart from each other, a snap latch between said stirrup and said hearing piece for securing said stirrup in either one of said two positions; said snap latch comprising a fiat spring With a projection for engaging in corresponding notches; V
. 7. In an ammunition chest with fixed bottom and sides and a lid; bearing pieces attached under the lid, depending shanks on said bearing pieces, stirrups journaled at the free ends of said shanks and constructed to have two positions 180 apart from each other, a snap latch between said stirrups and said bearing pieces for securing said stirrups in either one of said two positions.
The foregoing specification signed at Barinen, Germany, this 7th day of January, 1915.
