To all whom t may concern:
Be it known .that I, DANIELv S. EvEnE'r'r, a citizen of the United States, and resident of `Jordan, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain` new and useful Improvements in Power- Jacks for Automobiles, of which the following is a specication.
The present inventionfrelates to automobile-jacks of the type in which a wheelof an automobile is caused to engage alpowerwheel in order to transmit power from the automobile to a suitable power-shaft for the purpose of driving farmmachinery and the like, and an object of the invention is to provide a construction in which a runwayk leads to the power-wheel and, after the engagement of the wheel of the vehicle with the power-wheel, is automatically moved out of engagement with the vehicle-wheel by the latter so thatthe runway will not interfere with the turning of the vehicle-wheel.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a lsupporting means for the vehicle which may bebrought into cooperation with the vehicle while the wheel of thevehicle engages the runway and the power-wheel.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a supporting means for the vehicle which may be quickly moved to and from supporting position.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved mounting before the runway. j
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features .being pointed out in the appended claims.r

tion vof a modification in which the powershaft is provided with two power-wheels for engaging the two rear,v wheels of a motor vehicle, and the jack is also provided with two runways and two supporting devices.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention the jack comprises a main frame preferably formed of two angle bars 1 connected by cross-pieces 2, 3 and 4, the latter being formed to elevate one end of the frame. Also connecting the cross-pieces is a powershaft 5 provided with a pulley 6 from which the power is obtained. On this power-shaft 5, between the bars 1, is arranged a powerpulley 7, the periphery of which is preferably grooved to conform to the tire B of the motor vehicle.
For theV purpose of leading one of the rear wheels of the vehicle to the power-wheel 7 thereis provided a runway 8 formed on its top with converging flanges 9 which provideJ an easy entrance at the lower end of the runway and direct the wheel to the power-wheel 7. This runway is preferably movably .mounted to shift in the direction of its length and, to'this end, it operates on the rod or bar 10 connecting the longitudinal bars 1 and is tied to the bar 10 by a strap 11 which provides a longitudinallyextending way on the runway. By this arrangement, if the vehicle be supported and the wheel be turned inthe direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the wheel will move therunway longitudinally until the latter is out of the path of the wheel. To still further increase this action. the upper or inner end of the runway may be supported on a crankmember 12 which is journaled at 13 in the longitudinal bars `1, the runway being 'secured to the crank portion bv a strap 141. This same arrangement will also permit the runway to be returned to its initial position, if the wheel B be rotated in the opposite direction and the upper end of the runway be brought to a position where it will engage the vehicle wheel B while the The crank portion 12 shifts to one side of a vertical line through the turning axis 13 and thus brings the outer end of the guide 11 in contact with way shifts in the other direction, it turns acrank shaft 13a on the rod 10 as a pivot.
*A supporting means is employed which may be brought into engagement with the vehicle while the wheel of the latter is engaging the runway and the power-wheel 7. This supporting means preferably comprises an arm or member 15 having a ve- `hicle'engaging portion 1,6 at its upper end preferably adjustably connected to the arm 15 and, in this instance, having a crotch for engaging the axle of the vehicle and provided with a socket 1? fitting the upper end of the arm. The socket portion is provided with openings 18 and the arm is provided with openings 19, a bolt 20 being passed through one of the openings in the arm and one of the openings in the socket portion to adjustably connect the vehicle engaging member-to the arm 15. This adjustment is providedin order that the arm may be accommodatedfto dierent types of vehicles as it is desirable that a certain'pressure be maintained by the wheel B on the powerwheel. i
The lower portion of the arm 15 may be provided with a shifting fulcrum on the base or main frame and to this end one of the side bars 1 is provided with a slot 21 in which a pivot-`pin 23 is adapted to move, the pivot-pin being carried by the arm 15. Bolted or otherwise secured to the frame above the slot is a rack 24 having the teeth 25 on the under side thereof forengagement by a pawl 26 which is pivotally mounted on the pivot-pin 23 and has an extended arm 27 which acts as a weight for the purpose of normally holding the pawl 26 in engagement with -the rack 24. At each end of this pivoted rod 23a, pawls 26a are secured and only one of these pawls is provided with a weighted arm 27a. The other parts of the structure are substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and L1, as isA also the operation.
The operation of the invention is as follows :-The vehicle is backed up the runway 8 until one of its wheels B engages the power wheel 7 and bridges the space between the latter and the ends of the runway 8. The supporting arm is then shifted so that its engaging end 16 cooperates with the axle of the vehicle, the pawl 26 riding over the ratchet 24: and finally securing the pivot 28 in a fixed position. The hook 31 is then disengaged from the bar 1 and the motor of the vehicle is started to turn the wheel B in the direction of the arrow. This causes the runway 8 tobe shifted automatically under the action of the wheel to the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the wheel is supported by the arm 15 in engagement with the power wheel 7 and transmits its motion to said power wheel. When it is desired to disconnect the vehiclev from the jack, the runway 8 is shifted longitudinally until it engages the tire ofthe wheel, after which the wheel is turned in the direction opposite to the arrow in Fig. 1, causing the runway to assume its original position where it is again held by the hook 31. The foot or trip 28 is then operated to disengage the pawl 26 from the rack 24 when the arm may be shifted to release the vehicle so that the latter may travel down the runway.

The vehicle supporting means engages the vehicle while the wheel of the latter is in direct engagement with the runway and the power wheel and, in this way, there is no jar imposed upon the vehicle, as the latter, after it engages the power wheel, does not partake of any movement but is secured firmly in its driving position before the run way is displaced, and driving position is secured merely by the-movement of the vehicle on the runway until a wheel thereof engages the power pulley.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. An automobile-j ack comprising a powerwheel, a runway leading to said power-wheel and movable relatively thereto, and means for sup orting a vehicle while one of its wheels lifes in engagement with the powerwheel and the runway in order that therunway may be moved from engagement with the vehicle wheel without shifting the position of the wheel.
2. An automobile-jack comprising a powerwheel, a runway leading to said power-wheel and shiftable under the action of a vehicle wheel in turning, and supporting means for the vehicle adapted to engage the latter while a wheel of the vehicle lies in engagement with the power-wheel and the runway so that the vehicle wheel will be supported in engagement with the power-wheel after the runway has been shifted out of the path of the vehicle wheel on the turning of the latter.
3. An automobile-j ack comprising a powerleading to said wheel, a movable runway power-wheel, and supporting means for` a vehicle movable to engage the latter while a wheel of the vehicle lies in engagement with the runway and the power-wheel.

An automobile-j ack comprising a frame, a power-wheel on the frame, a runway leading tothe power-wheel and movable on the frame, an arm having its upper end provided with a portion to engage a vehicle, and its other end shiftable on the frame in the direction of the length of the runway, the arm, when engaging a vehicle, lying at such an angle to the vertical that the weight of the vehicle swings the armV to throw the greater amount of the weight of the vehicle on the power-wheel'.
6. An automobile -jack comprising a power-wheel. a movable runway leading to the power-wheel, and a vehicle supportingarm having a shiftable fulcrum.
7. An automobile -jack comprising a power-wheel, a movable runway leading to the power-wheel, a vehicle supporting-arm having a shiftable fulcrum, and devices for securing the pivot of said arm in any position to which it may be adjusted.
8. An automobile -jack comprising a power-wheel, a movable runway leading to the power-wheel, a vehicle supporting-arm having a shiftable fulcrum, and devices for securing the pivot of said arm in any position to which it may be adjusted, embodying a fixed rack and a pawl carried by said arm to ride over the rack as the pivot of the arm is shifted in causing the arm to engage a vehicle.
9. An automobilejack comprising a power-wheel, a movable runway leading to the power-wheel, a vehicle supporting-arm having a shiftable fulcrum, devices for securing the pivot Vof said arm in any position to which it may be adjusted, embodying a Xed rack and a pawl carried by said arm to ride over the rack as the pivot of the arm is shifted in causing the arm to engage a vehicle, said pawl having an extended arm, and a device mounted on a fixed part for cooperating with'the extended arm in any position to which the supporting-arm may be adjusted.
10. An automobilej ack comprising a power-wheel, a movable runway leading to the power-wheel, a vehicle supporting-arm having a shiftable fulcrum, and a vehicle engaging member adjustable on the arm.

An automobile-jack comprising a power-wheel, a movable runway leading to said power-wheel and spaced at one end from the latter so that a wheel of a vehicle may bridge the space while engaging the power-wheel and the runway, a movable support for that end of the runway adjacent the power-wheel acting to permit the runway to shift longitudinally away from the space between the runway and the powerpower-wheel, a rod on which said runway is wheel and tending to move the vehicle-wheel movably supported between its ends, and a, toward the power-wheel when the runway is guide on said runway operating on said rod 10 moved out of engagement with said Vehicleand permitting the runway to move in the 5 wheel. direction of' its length on said rod.
