contact with a stop The operation of the parts so far described is as follows: With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, with the driveshaft 26 being rotated by any suitable power in the direction indicated by the arrow on l,
the pulley 27 in that figure, with the roller 57 held outward by the cam 58, and with the clutch members 36-37 out of engagement, a stereotype plate 71, preferably immediately after it is taken from the casting box and while it is still hot, is placed upon the table 70 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. The table 70 being then tipped 'up to its inclined position, the plate 7l slides into the drum into position with its side edges resting upon the ribs 65. The movement of the plate 71 into the drum is stopped by reason of a lug 74 on the tail of the plate 7l coming into 75 on the table 70, as shown in Fig. 7, the lug and stop being so located relative to each other that the plate is stopped in proper position relative to the shaving knife 69 and the rotary cutter 34. When the plate has reached itsproper position, the lever 47 is pressed downward against the action of the spring 49, moving the arms 44 and 42 to the right in Fig. 2, and thus moving the yoke 38 and clutchmember 37 to the left in that figure, causing the clutch members to engage and driving the drum in the direction indicated by the arrow thereon. The same movement of the lever 47 downward moves the arm 50 and the lower arm of the lever 52 to the left in Fig. 2, moving the horizontally-extending arm of said lever 52 downward. As soon as the drum has been given a slight rotation, the roller 57 is cleared of the cam 58 and is permitted to drop, turning the lever 54 in a clockwise direction, bringing the downwardly-extending arm of said lever 54 into position over the plate 56 of the lever 52. lIt is then permissible for the operator to let loose of the lever 47, whereupon the spring 49, through the connecting arms and links, brings the plate 56 into Contact with the lower end of the lever 54, thus holding the lever 52 in turned position and holding the lever 47 in its lowered position against the action of the spring 49. When the drum 20 has been rotated a very little bit, the rollers 63 are drawn inward by the cam rings 64, raising the ribs 65 and locking the plate 7l iirmly in position in the drum. Shortly thereafter', in the rotation of the drum, the plate is brought into contact with the rotary cutter 34, which is driven through the medium of the gears 28 and 29, shaft 30, pulleys 31 and 32 and belt 35, and the shaft 33,
as will be readily understood. This rotary cutter 34 severs the tail piece from the plate proper and gives to the end of the plate the desired bevel. At about the completion of the cutting of the tail from the plate proper, the forward edge of the plate is brought into rides up the cam contact with the knife 69 which shaves the inner peripheries of the ribs 76 which extend circumferentially around the interior of the plate, thus giving the plate the precise thickness necessary for At about the time that the plate completely passes the shaving knife 69, the roller 57 58, moving the lower arm of the lever 54 to the right in Fig. 2, permit-ting' the horizontally-extending arm of the lever 52 to be raised by the action of the spring 49 which forces the lever 47 upward, throwing the clutch member 37 out ofengagement with the clutch member 36 and permitting the drum to stop. The drum will stop very quickly since it is rotated very slowly and its momentum is very small, stopping always with the ribs substantially in alinement with the transversely-extending flanges of the table 70. As thedrum assumes its original normal position, the .rollers 63 are forced outward by the weight of the plate 71 upon the ribs 65, being permitted to move outward by the appropriately-located openings in the cam rings 64.- Thereupon the plate 71 slides out of the drumby gravity, there being now no means for preventing the movement of the plate, since .the lug 74 which contacted the stop 75 was onthe tail of the plate which was cut oli by the rotary cutter. Coming now to the mechanism for receiving the plate from the drum, cooling the plate, and delivering it standing on end, 77 indicates standards rising from the frame 28, in the upper ends of which is journaled a shaft 78. Keyed upon said shaft 78 are two collars 79-80, rising from each of which is an arm 81, to the upper ends of which arms is fiXedly secured a carriage 82 substantially in the form of a semi-cylinder of a curvature adapted to fit a stereotype plate.

Said pipe 141 is provided with suitable openings in its lower rear side whereby when water is fed to said pipe a plurality of jets of waterare adapted to be forced in a rearward and downward direction. rlhe mechanism is so arrangedv that when the plate is released from the drum 20 and slides out therefrom, the carriage 82 is in its inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1, with the stops 106 in their uppermost position relative to the carriage. The plate therefore slides out of the drum onto the carriage, the leading edge of the plate contacting the arm 139 and moving it downward, opening the valve 138 and causing a plurality of streams of cold water to play upon the interior surface of the carriage and through the openings 137 therein upon the inner surface of the plate 71, the leading edge of the plate coming later in contact with the stops 106 by which it is held securely in position.
` As is readily understood,`the shaft 89 and disk 115 are rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3, through the 96 and vits connected parts, during the time that the drum After the plate 71 has slid out of the drum, the lever 47 is depressed a second time as hereinabove set forth, setting in operation again the drum and the shaft 89.
The arrangement is suoli that shortly after the plate 71 is moved to its position on the carriage and the shaft 89 is set to rotating, the cam groove 92 forces the pin 93 and links 87 and 84 to the right in Fig. 4, moving the arm 83 to the right and raising the carriage 82, bringing the upper end of the plate 71 thereon into contact with the arm 143 and opening the valvevl42 causing a plurality of streams of cold water to be forced onto the plate and the carriage from the curved pipe 141. At the same time, the cam groove 116 forces the pin 117 and the links 113 and 111 to the right in Fig. 4 in unison with the movement of the pin 93 and the links 87 and 84 to the right. just about the time that the carriage reaches its vertical position, however, the cam groove 116 moves the pin 117 faster than the movement of the pin 93, as shown diagrammatically in and 111 therefore being given a movement relative to that of the links 87 and 84. That is to say, the collar 103 is given a slight ro-` tation in a counter-clockwise direction relative to the collar of the parts is such that this happens when the arm 108 is moving downward and when the slot in the collar 102 is in a substantially vertical position. The result is that as the arm 108 continues to move downward and the arm 110 continues to move to the right in Fig. 6, the collar 102 is lowered relative to the shaft 78, drawing downward the plate 105 and the stops 106, depositing the plate 71 standing on end upon the belts 126.
Shortly after the plate is deposited on the belts 126, the cam grooves 92 and 116 cause the carriage to descend and the stops 1.06 to rise again relative to the carriage, ready to-receive another plate from the drum 21 as just described. As'the carriage moves away from the plate 71, it will be understood that the arm 139 is free to rise, thus shutting 0H" the flow -of water from the pipe 136 until the valve 138 is again opened by the succeeding plate. As the carriage descends, the collar is` of course turned in a direction to actuate the sprocket-wheel 130 through the medium of the pawl 133 and ratchetwheel 131, moving the upper portions of the belts 126 to the left in Figs. 3 and 4, moving the plate 71 to the left out of the way of the plates to be thereafter delivered to the belts. As the plate 71 is moved to the left, it passes under the end of the arm 143, whereupon said arm is free to move to close the valve 142, thus shutting ofi theflow'of water from the pipe 144 until the valve is again opened by the next succeeding plate.
It will be understood that some time after the carriage 82 is lowered into alinement with the drum and before the carriage begins again to ascend, the drum will have been rotated into position to bring the roller 57 into contact with the cam 58, throwing out of engagement the clutch members 36 and 37 and stopping the rotation of the sleeve 25ZL and its driven parts. In case a number of plates are to be finished in succession, the second plate will ordinarily be placed in position in the drum before the lever 47 is depressed the second time to cool and deliver the first plate, thus one plate being finished and another being cooled and Fig. 8, the links 113 1.'

l. In a stereotype plate finishing machine, the combination with a frame and a drum mounted thereon with one end higher than the other, of a table pivotally mounted on said frame in front of said drum and adapted to be turned either into a horizontal positioncor into inclined position in alinement with said drum.
2. In a stereotype plate finishing machine, the combination with a frame, and a drum mounted thereon with one end yhigher than the other, of a table mounted on said frame in front of said drum on a pivot intermediate of' the ends of said table and adapted to be turned either into a horizontal position or into inclined position in alinement with said drum, and stopsl adapted to limit the movement of said table.
3. In a stereotype plate finishing machine, the combination with a frame, and a drum mounted thereon with one end higher than the other, of a table pivotallyY mounted on said frame in front ofsaid drum and adapted to be turned either into a horizontal position or into inclined position in alinement with said drum, said table being curved at one end to conform to the curvature of a stereotype plate and being so positioned that when said table is turnedinto inclined position with aplate thereon said plate is adapted to slide into position in said drum.

In a stereotype plate finishing machine, the combination with a frame and a. drum mounted thereon with one end higher than the other, of a table pivotally mounted on said frame in front of said drum and adapted to be turned either into a horizontal position or into inclined position in alinement with said drum, andV guiding means on `said table whereby when said table lis turned into 5 mounted thereon with inclined position with a plate thereon said plate will automatically slide into position in said drum.
5. In a stereotype plate finishing machine, the combination with a frame and a drum mounted thereon with one end higher than the other, of a table pivotally mounted on said frame in front of said drum and adapted to be turned either into a horizontal position or into inclined position in alinement with said drum, guiding means on said table whereby when said table is turned into inclined position withV a plate thereon said plate will automatically slide into position in said drum, and a stop adapted to4 limit the movement of said plate into said drum.
