PIANO-BACK.

Application filed July 13, 1916.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it lmown that I, Josnrrr VoGnLrmN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Construction for Piano- Backs, of which the following is a full, clear, and comprehensive specification and exposition, being such as will enable others familiar with the art to construct the same with exactitude.

The object of my present invention, broadly speaking, is to provide a frame for pianos which will be strong and durable in construction and involving a maximum of strength with a minimum amount of material incorporated therein whereby it can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low price.

Other minor objects and particular advantages of the invention will suggest themselves in the course of the following description, and that which is new will be correlated in the claims.

The preferred means for carrying out my invention in a practical manner, and that which I have found to be the most practical, is shown in the accompanying one sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front, or inside, elevation of the back frame of a piano embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side, or edge, elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear, or outside, elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. -t is a vertical section, as taken on the line l-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail verticalsection, as taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3. And Fig. 6 is a top plan view.

The construction includes a plurality of vertical posts, for instance such as those indicated by

1, 2, 3 and 2l, which number may be increased or diminished as desired. Formed across in the rear face of the upper end portion of each of the pests is a gain or mortise, as indicated at a in Fig. 2, the same being L-shaped, that is having one shoulder and opening out at the ends of Specification of Letters Patent.

The mortises a. and ZJ are of the same depth, horizontally, but the latter are of less length vertically.

Numeral 5 denotes the upper inner back board, whose width is equal to the length of the mortise a, and the thickness of the board 5 is equal to one-half the depth of said mortise, in which it is adapted to rest.

Numeral 6 denotes the upper and outer cap board, which contacts with the board 5, as Shown, and whose outer face extends iiush with the posts.

Numeral 7 denotes the lower inner back board, whose width is equal to the length. of the mortise b, in which it is adapted to rest.

Numeral 8 denotes the lower and outer cap board, which contacts with the board 7, as shown, and whose outer face extends flush with the posts.

Extending across the upper portions of the inner faces of all of the posts, with its upper edge even with the ends of the posts, is the wrest plank 9 whose lower portion is reduced in thickness, forming a shoulder, and also a tongue c, thereby forming the L- shaped mortise to receive the upper edge of this sounding board 10. Extending across the lower ends of the posts is the beveled plate 11, that is its inner upper edge is beveled, as shown. Secured on the inner faces of the posts 1 and 4r, and extending parallel therewith, are the

12 and 13, respectively.

The edges of the sounding board 10 rest upon and are secured to the inner faces of the

side strips

12 and 13, and upon-the beveled plate 11,.and on the tongue c, with its upper edge resting in the mortise of the wrest plank 9, substantially as shown. The

spaces between the upper portions of the several posts are filled by blocks 14, whose upper edges are flush with the upper ends of the posts, the members 5 and G, and the up per edge of the wrest plank 9, and whose lower edges are flush with the'lower edges of the members 5 and G. Also the spaces between the lower portions of the several posts are filled by the blocks l5, whose lower edges are flush with the lower ends of the sevei posts, the lower edges of the members T and 8, and the lower edge of the beveled plate l1, and the upper edges are flush with the upper edges of the

members

7 and 8. The member 5 is secured to each of the posts by a plurality of dowels which extend through the board 5, the posts, and into the wrest plank 9, as indicated in F ig. 5. ln like mani ner the member 8 is secured to each of the posts by a plurality of dowels 17 which eX- tend through the member 8, the posts, and into the beveled plate 11.

1t is to be understood that the usual metal frame, not shown, may be secured to the inner face of the wrest plank and to theV lower portion of the sounding board and the beveled plate, to carry the usual wires across forward of the sounding board, but these parts do not pertain to this invention, therefore they are not shown or described. The various parts should be arranged substantially as shown and described and they should be glued at the various points of contact and rigidly clamped together, and further secured by screws or the like at the various intersections. llVhen thus assembled it is evident that l provide a very rigid construction. capable of immense strain, and otherwise attaining the objects herein before stated.

Having now fully shown and described my invention, what 1 claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

l. A piano back comprising a frame in cluding a plurality of vertical posts spaced apart and having L-shaped mortises in their rear faces at both their upper and lower end. portions, double back boards extending across and filling both the upper and the lower mortises of the posts, a wrest plank secured across and to the upper portions of the inner faces of the posts, a beveled plate secured across and to the lower portions of the inner faces of the posts, side strips secured to the two outer posts and connecting the wrest plank and the beveled plate, and means for securing all of said parts into a unitary structure, substantially as set forth.

2. A piano back comprising a frame including a plurality of vertical posts spaced apart, a double back board extending across the upper portions of allof the posts and mortised in flush therewith, a double back board extending across the lower portions of all of the posts and inortised in flush therewith, a wrest plank extending across and secured to said posts on the side vthereof opposite to said upper back board, a beveled plate extending across and secured to said posts on the side thereof opposite to said lower back board, andmeans for securing said parts together.

3. A piano back comprising a frame including a plurality of vertical posts having mortises in their rear faces at their upper and lower ends, an inner back board located in the upper mortises, an outer back board located in the upper mortises and contacting with the inner back board, an inner back board located in the lower mortises, an outer back board located in the lower mortises and contacting with the last mentioned inner back board, a wrest plank extending across and located on the upper portions of the posts and on the opposite side thereof to said upper inner and outer back boards, blocks filling the spaces between the upper portions of the posts with their upper and lower edges flush with the upper and lower edges of the upper inner and outer back boards, a plate secured to the lower portions of the posts on the side thereof opposite to said lower inner and outer back boards, blocks filling the spaces between the posts with their edges Hush with the upper and lower edges of lower inner and outer back boards, all substantially as set forth.

A piano back comprising a plurality of vertical posts spaced apart, a double back board let in flush with and extending across the upper end portions of the posts, a double back board let in flush with and extending across the lower end portions of the posts, blocks lilling the spaces in front of the upper double back and between the posts, blocks filling the spaces in front of the lower double back and between the posts, a wrest plank extending across the upper portions of the posts on the sides thereof opposite to the upper double back, a beveled plate extending across the lower portions of the posts on the sides thereof opposite to the lower' double back, dowels connecting the inner member of the double upper back with the posts and the wrest plank, dowels connecting the inner member of the double lower back with the posts and beveled plate, all substantially as shown and described.

A piano back comprising a plurality of spaced apart posts, double back boards connecting the top and the bottom of the posts and let in flush with the rear faces thereof, a wrest plank connecting the upper ends of the inner faces of the posts, a beveled plate connecting the lower ends of the inner faces of the posts, a sounding board resting on the beveled plate and let in flush with and connected to the wrest plank, side strips carried by the outside posts and on which the side Vedges of the sounding board rest, blocks filling the spaces between the upper and the lower 'end portions of the posts,rand means for securing all of said parts into a unitary structure, all substantially as shown Y and described.
