Description

PATENT FFIGE.
LYOURGUS NELSON, OF SMYRNA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROCK-DRILLING APPARATUS. i
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,120, dated November 21,1871.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYcUEGUs NELsoN, of Smyrna, in the county of Rutherford and State of Tennessee, have invented a new Improved Drilling Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved drilling apparatus, the line c c, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new arrangement of power-drill; and has for its object to so combine the necessary shafts and devices that either of the processes of drilling, extracting tools, and sand-pumping may be carried on without much preparation or difficult change of gearing. The invention consists in the general new arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described.
A is the drawing represents the frame of my improved drilling apparatus. It is mounted upon truck-wheels B B, and has four transverse shafts, D, O, E, and F. The shaft() has a crank, a, and is, by means of a rod, b, connected with a walking-beam, G, pivoted to the top of a samsonpost, H, that projects from the front of the frame A. The outer end of the walking-beam carries a hook, el, to which the drilling implement is attached during operation. The shaft D is, by gearing e f, connected with the shaft C, and serves to operate the drill-rope I. When the shaft D is to be used the movable wheel c is thrown into gear with the wheel j', and motion applied to the shaft C, so as to Wind up the rope I. The rope is laid over a pulley, g, of the derrick J, and attached to the tools, so that it will draw them ont of the well when the shaft D is revolved. The shaft E is, by a pinion connected with the gear-wheel j", and has a crank-handle, so that it may be worked by hand to retract the tools. F is the sand-pump shaft. It is, by a loose belt, h, connected with the shaft C. A lever, L, carrying a friction-pulley, t', which can be thrown against the belt to tighten it, When the sand-pump rope j will be Wound up for elevating the sand pump. The derrick J is, by means of hinged braces Z, connected with the frame A, and can be laid upon the same when the entire apparatus is to be conveyed from one place to another.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The drilling apparatus, consisting of the frame A, shafts l, D, E, and F, beam G, and lever L, all combined to operate substantially as herein shown and described.
LYCUItGUS NELSON.
