Patented Jan. 2, 1917.
Application filed. June 30,1914. Serial No. 848,136.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON LEvn cLn, citizen of the French Republic, residing at Roubaix, in the Department of Nord,
France, have invented certain new and useful Improved Apparatus for Supplementing the Carding and Burring of the Sliver in Double-Carding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an apparatus for supplementing the carding and burring of a sliver or partially carded lap as the same passes through a double carding machine for carding wool and other textile materials, and to do this independently of the carding and burring apparatuses existing in the well known forms of machines of this character.
The improved apparatus receives the sliver or partially carded lap from the existing burring apparatus (which may be of any suitable type) or from the first carding cylinder of a double carding machine, for treatment for the purpose of carding and reducing the thickness of said sliver or partially carded lap before the sliver or lap passes on to the final burring apparatus.
An essential characteristic feature of the improved apparatus is that its cylinders and its dofi'er are arranged to work in the reverse direction of their teeth.
A practical construction of the improved apparatus is illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a double carding machine for W001, wherein the improved apparatus is arranged in the middle of the carding machine after the dofier of the first or breaker carding cylinder. Fig. 2 shows a similar carding machine wherein the improved apparatus is arranged to receive the sliver or partially carded lap after the latter leaves the existing burring apparatus.
As shown in both figures, 1 designates the frame of the carding machine; 2 is the first or breaker carding cylinder; 3 is the first dofier; and 5 is the finisher carding cylinder. In Fig. 2, the existing burring apparatus which occurs in some types of double carding machines at present used, is shown somewhat generally and is designated 4.
The improved apparatus for effecting the additional or su plementary carding and burring operations, comprises rollers 6, 7 and 8 arranged either after the first doft'er 3, as shown in Fig. 1, Or after the existing burring apparatus 4:, as shown in Fig. 2. These rollers 6, 7 8 act to compress the lap over its entire width, and to deliver it to a dofler 9 which serves to card it against the direction of its travel, thereby reducing its thickness and removing any foreign matters that may be held by its projecting fibers, before the said lap reaches the clearer 10. The lap having thus been opened and reduced in thickness, is taken by the doifer 11 and held by the brush 12, whence it passes under the clearer 18 which completes the burring of the lap before delivering it to the finisher carding cylinder 5.
It is to be understood that the card clothing of the cylinders and doffers of the improved apparatus while working in the reverse direction of their teeth, may be of any suitable kind, for instance, the sawtooth type, fiats, or rings provided with teeth.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner'the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. The combination with a double carding machine comprising a breaker carding cylinder, a doffer in operative engagement therewith and a finisher carding cylinder, of an apparatus for supplementing the carding and burring of the sliver as it passes through the machine comprising a plurality of toothed rolls interposed between the said doffer and the finisher carding cylinder between which rolls said sliver passes, and means for rotating said rolls in a direction opposite to the direction of the teeth thereon.
2. The combination with a double carding machine comprising a breaker carding cylinder, a dofi'er in operative engagement therewith, a burring apparatus in operative engagement with said dofier and a finisher carding cylinder, of an apparatus for supplementing the carding and burring of the sliver comprising a plurality of toothed rolls interposed between said burring apparatus and the finisher carding cylinder, between whichrolls said sliver passes, and means for rotating said rolls in a direction opposite to the direction of the teeth thereon.
3. The combination with a double carding machine comprising a breaker carding cylinder, a dofier in operative engagement therewith and a finisher carding cylinder,
of an apparatus for supplementing the carding and burring of the sliver interposed between the doffer and the finisher carding cylindercomprising a plurality of toothed. rollers, a second dofier in close proximitv to said toothed rollers, means for rotating said toothed rollers in a direction opposite to the teeth thereon, and means for delivering the sliver from said last named doffer to the finisher carding cylinder, said means comprising a third dofi'er delivering said sliver direct to the finisher carding cylinder and a brush and drum wheel in operative engagement with said last named dofl er.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
