IMPROVEMENT IN KEYS FOR SEWING-MACHINE LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,096, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. GAYLORD, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Key for Sewing-Machine Locks, 85c. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view of a lock, showing a key-hole into which my improved key fits. Fig. 2 is a side view of my improved key. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section of the same taken through the line .70 00, Fig. 2.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved key for locks to be attached to sewing machine covers and other articles that are turned up or over so that the key is liable to fall out and be lost, and which shall be so constructed as to retain its place in the key-hole however much the article to which the lock is attached may be turned up; and it consists in the key constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the key, which is made in two parts, secured to each other at the handle end by rivets, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The forward ends of the parts or pieces of the key A are made square, and are beveled or slightly bent inward at their extreme ends to enable them to be conveniently inserted in the square key-hole of the lock. The parts of the key A are made elastic and their forward parts are set out, as shown in Fig. '3, so as to be pressed inward or toward each other when the key is pressed into the key-hole, where the key will be retained by the elasticity of said parts. The parts of the key A may be of equal size, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or one part may be smaller than the-other.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The key A, having two elastic prongs beveled inwardly at the ends thereof, as and for the purpose specified.
