IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKE-STACKS FOR ENGINES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,062, dated November 21, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. PHOEBUS, of Memphis, Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Stacks for Engines, Furnaces, Fire-Places, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which represents a vertical central section through my improved stack.
The objects of my invention are to secure a perfect combustion of sparks or cinders, to render the draught adjustable at pleasure, and to obtain an increased draught or heating power; to which ends my improvements consist: First, in combining a stack, a deflector, and an adjusting mechanism, whereby the deflector may be easily and quickly operated to increase or decrease the draught, as hereinafter described. In this instance, A represents an ordinary chimney or smoke-stack. The deflector B O is made in the form of a shallow-thimble with a central concavo-convex top, the convex side being inward. Its size is, by preference, such that its annular discharge-opening F shall equal the area of the chimney-throat or stack A. This deflector encircles the top of the chimney, and is adjustable relatively thereto so as to vary the area of the exhaust-opening. This adjustment is effected, in this instance, as follows: Sockets or eyes I on the deflector slide on guide-rods K secured to the jacket. A stem, L, projecting from the deflector, is pivoted to a lever, M, rocking on a fulcrum on the stack, so that by rocking this lever the deflector may be raised or lowered and held in any desired relation to the stack. The outer drum or jacket D encircles the chimney or stack, which projects into it about onethird of its height. The size of this drum is such that the area of its annular passage H, between it and the deflector, is equal to that of the chimneyA or that of the discharge-openings F. The area of the upper portion D of the drum is equal to that of its lower portion, the deflector normally dividing the drum into two nearly equal portions. The area of the mouth E of the drum is equal to that of the chimney A.
In operation the cinders, rising through the chimney, impinge upon the central projection of the deflector, and are at once deflected outward instead of being retained and wearing out the center plate, as in the old concave form. The cinders are deflected against the curves B O at the edge of the deflector, where they are crushed or retarded somewhat in their passage to give more time for combustion; or, if carried past this point, they are deposited in the angle or pocket G, where their combustion is completed, the ashes being swept out by the draught through the passages H D E. The intensity of the draught is varied by raising or lowering the deflector by the mechanism hereinbefore described.
It will be observed that the area of the drum D on the line N O is twice that of the openings A or F, thus diminishing the draught through the pockets G. The enlarged upper portion D of the drum gives increased heating area and a better draught than could be attained by a smaller chamber, while the narrow throat prevents a too rapid escape of the hot products of combustion.
My improvement, obviously, may readily be adapted to stove-pipes for heating an upper room by placing the jacket or drum just above the floor, and thus utilizing the increase of heat obtained, as hereinbefore set forth.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the stack, the deflector, the guide-rods, and the adjusting-lever, substantially as described, so that the deflector may be easily and quickly adjusted, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the stack, the deflector, the enlarged drum, and its narrow throat, these members being constructed to operate in combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth.
