Specification of Iletters Patent.
Patented Dec. as, rare.
Application filed may 4:, 1916. Serial No. 95,461.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ll, MATTHEW A. NATHAN- soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bill-Folders, ofwhich the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. I
This invention relates to a combination pocket book or bill folder and card case, such as is now commonly used for holding bills and cards and usually carried in a foldried in the vest ,or other pocket without inconvenience and without abnormally bulging out the garment, and wherebythe life of the book is materially prolonged as will be -.described. To this end, the .folder' or book is provided with an inner and a back or cover layer or member. which are of unequal length, and are sewed or otherwise at tached together so as to obtain a fullness in the back layer or member at the front edge of the book, which fullness allows the book to be folded when containing a substantially large number of bills and have the folded parts lie substantially fiat and parallel, and which also avoids wrinkling anddamage to thebook.
The particular features of the invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification. r
Figure 1 is an, edge view of a combined folder and card case embodying this invention. Fig. 2, a developed view of substantially one-half of the foldershown in Fig. 1, looking at the back of the same; Fig. 3, a like view looking at the front or inner side of substantially one half of the folder. Fig. 4, an edge view to illustrate the surplus material in the back member, and the substantially wide mouth or opening for the insertion of the bills, and Fig. 5, an edge view of the folder partially folded.
Referring to the drawing, a represents the front or inner member, and. Z the back or cover member of a bill folder embodying this invention.
The front or inner member a is made substantially oblong in shape in its developed or flattened condition, andv is provided with the usual pockets or receptacles 10, 12, 13', for cards, postage stamps and the like.
The back or cover member 6 is made of greater length than the member a at its front edge and also preferably at its rear edge, and is also preferably oblong in shape and stitched or otherwise secured at one end preferably at both ends to the opposite ends ofthe front member a, and it has its rear edge sewed or otherwise secured for a portion of its length to the. rear edge of the front member a. a
The front edge of the back or cover mem- 'the back member affords a substantialry Wide mouth or opening 15 for the insertion of the bills represented by the lines 16 in Fig. 4.
The front member a may be considered .as composed of a center section 17 and two . side sections 18, 19, and the back member 6 is Preferably secured at its rear edge to only the center section '17 as by the stitches 60, Fig. 2, so as to leave its side sections 20, 21, unattached from both the rear and front edgesof the member a, which provides the side sections 20, 21 of the back member with asurplus of material, which surplus is taken up .by the bills 16 in the folded condition of the book or folder shown in 1, and enables the said book or folder, even when it holds a substantially large number of bills, to be folded so that the side sections 20, 21, overlap and assume a substantially flat condition with the overlapping sections substantially parallel with the center section. As a result, the folded book containing a substantially large number of bills, cards, etc., may be carried in the vest or other pocket without bulging out the garment, which bulging is highly objectionable. Furthermore the surplus material in the back or cover member 6, enables the curved portions 25 of the back member to be separated from the, curved portions 26 of the inner or front member substantially the same distance as the side sections of the back member are separated from the side sections of the front or inner member a, when the book or folder is folded into its closed position represented in Fig. 1. So also the surplus material in the back or cover member avoids strain, wrinkling or puckering of the inner member a when the book is folded,
as the sections of the inner member when folded can assume a parallel condition Without being shortened and thereby puckered by the cover member when folded, thereby avoiding breaking or cracking of the inner member or of the cards or other contents contained in the pockets or receptacles of the inner member.
It will readily be seen that if the inner and cover members should be made of the same length, the inner member must be wrinkled or puckered, when the cover member is folded, because in this case the inner member may be said to have a surplus of material with relation to the cover member when the latter is in its folded condition, and this puckering or wrinkling damages the book or folder, and the damage is increased if the pockets contain cards or the like, which latter are also cracked or damaged.
It is preferred to make the back member of greater length than the front member at both its front and rear edges, but it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, as it is sufiicient if the front edge of the back or cover1member is made longer than the front edge of the inner or front member, and in practice the member 7) is made about three-quarters of an inch longer than the front member.
Claims: V
1. A combined card case and bill folder, comprising an inner member provided with pockets for the receptionof cards and the neeaeae like and capable of being folded to form a center section and overlapping side sections, and a cover or back member of greater length than said inner member and having its opposite ends secured to the opposite and a back or cover member of greater length than said inner member and having its ends attached to the ends of the inner member and its rear edge attached to the center section of the inner member and unattached from the rear edge of the side sections of the inner member.
3. A folder comprising an inner member provided with a center section and side sections capable of being overlapped, and a back or cover member of greater length than said inner member and having its ends attached to the ends of the inner member and having a portion of its rear edge secured to the rear edge of the inner member and having another portion of its rear edge unsecured to the'rear edge of said inner member.
In testimony whereof, I have signed name to this specification.
