COMBINED OIL-CUP AND CIBCUIT-CLOSEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1916.

resulting heating of the bearing, the cir-.
cuit closer will be actuated for giving a signal;
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of be readily inserted into place and accomplish the two results previously set forth. 1
. construction,
Another object of the invention is to dispose a portion of the thermostatic circuit closer in a closed compartment so that the air in the compartment will be readily heated by the rising temperature of the bearing or in case of oil to have its temperature raised, this heat being concentrated around the thermostatic circuit closer.
A further object of the invention is the novel manner in which the mercury column of the circuit closer is effectively held against.
vibration during the operation of the machine to which the device is attached.
The invention consists in the features" of combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through a journal showing my device appliedthereto. Figs. 2 and 3 are horizontal cross sections therethrough, and Fig. 4 is a view similarto Fig. 1 of a modified form of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularlw to the preferred from of my in vention, the numeral -1 designates a bearing in which is 'rotatably mounted an axle 2. This bearing 1 is provided'with a bore 3 communicating with the axle 2, and mounted within the bore 3 and having screw threaded engagement with the bearing 1, as
indicated at 5,is a tube 6 having its lower end closed and shaped to conform to the curvature of the axle 2.; This tube 6 has its external diameter contracted from the point '2 to the bottom thereof so as to leave bethis character that can tween the bore wall and the outer surface of the tube an annular channel 8 that communicates with the interior of the tube by way of an outlet 9 arranged at an intermediate point. That portion of the interior of the tube below the outlet 9 is filled with plaster of Paris or other plastic material 10 in which is embedded a thermometer 11, the bulb 12 of which rests directly upon the bottom of the tube so that the heat from the axle may readily conduct through the metal of the tube to the bulb for causing the mercury in the latter to expand for a pur tact with the mercury in the column of the thermometer is the conductor 8 of the alarm circuit 9' that includes an electric bell 10 and a battery 11, the otherconductor of'the circuit is hermetically sealed in the upper end of the column of the thermometer in such a manner as to have its ends disposed at a predetermined dlstance above the surface of the mercury, as indicated at 16.
In the preferred form of my invention, I have shown a tube 17 resting upon the bulb of -,the thermometer, surrounding the 'column of the thermometer and passing through the side wall of the tube and communicating with the atmosphere, the object of this tube is to protect the circuit wires from the liquid within the tube. When it is found advantageous in practice, the tube can be dispensed with and the mercury device or thermometer completely" housed by the plaster of Paris in view of the fact that oil is practically a non-conductor of electricity having a very high resistivity.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I combine an oilcup and a thermostatic circuit closer by means of which oil can be readily fed to a rotatable member and upon the stoppage of the flow of oil an alarm will be given.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
Incombination with a bearing, an axle rotatably monnted therein,- said hearing being provided With a bore communicating with said axle, atube threaded in 'said bore,
and having a portion spaced from the Wall of the bore to form an annular chamber, the
tube being provided With an opening to permit permanent communication, with the chamber and the interior of'the tube plastic material arranged in the bottom of the tube below said opening, and a thermostatic cir- 10 cuit closer supported by said plastic material. r 7
In testimony whereofl afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
as E. CAMPBELL.
