Description

W. H. WEST.
WINDOW VENTILATOR. APPLICATION 111120 DEC. 2o. 1915.
Patented 1190.111916.'
s 9 V .111.1 .l 9 a a mi W TTOHII/EYS 'WILLS E. WEST, OF TRINIDAD, COLORAD.
WNDOW-VENTILATOR.
` Application led December 20, 1915.
T0 @ZZ-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WiLLIs H. WEST, a
`citizen of the United States, and a resident air currents upon an occupant of the room so ventilated.
A further object is to provide such a de vice in a compact forni ready for instant installation within a. window frame and as readily detached therefrom, which will positively prevent the admission of rain lor snow to the room, 'and which is comparatively inexpensive.
My invention is fully described in' the following specification, of which the accompany drawings form a part, in which like characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a window frame, from the interior of a building, provided with my invention in open position; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. l, with the ventilator in closed position; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line of Fig. l z; Fig. 4
iS side elevation of the ventilator detached from the window; and Fig. o is a detached view of a detail.
In Figs. l. to 3, inclusive, I have shown,
, fragmentarily, aI window frame 5 provided with vertically 'movable sashes, only one of which, 6, is. showin'this being the inner and Serial No. 67,?65.
ing open at its lower side and, with the enception of the strip 10, is also open at its tcp. The lower edges of the side plates 7' are cut to lit the window sill, and the upper inner corners are cut away to form downwardly and inwardly inclined supports for a iid l2 hinged to the front member 8 and provided with dependent end members 13. These end members 13 are arranged within though in close proximity to the side plates 'Z to pre-1 vent the admission 'of the e ts therebetween, anda knob le is p led whereby the lid l2 may be swung` upon its hinges l5.
At 16 is shown a latch hinged to the under side of the lid l2 at 17 and provided with a plurality of teeth 18 along its upper edge for engagement with the under edge of the,
sash 6 when the latter has been moved downwardly to rest upon the upper edges of the side plates 7 and, when the ventilator is properly placed and the sash so lowered, it will be noted that the strip l0 bears against the sash 'at its cuter side and the lid l2 bears against said sash on its inner side, thereby excluding wind, rain, snow, dust, etc., from the building equipped with my invention.
At 19 is shown a vertical rod passed through a slot 20 in the latch 16 to guide the latter when vertically moved to desired position with respect to the sash 6, and said rod carries a coil spring 2l bearing against the under side of the latch to insure engagement thereof with said sash. As shown at QQ, also provide a coil spring for maintaining the lid l2 in adjusted position and which spring 22 also aids in maintaining the latch 16 in desired position.
TNhen the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 2, the elements are excluded from the room provided with my invention but, whenever desired, the lid l2 may be moved upwardly on its hinges until the' desired tooth 1S engages the sash 6, and ventilation to that extent is assured, but no rain or snow may enter the room because of the screen ll, and the strip l0 and the inclined member 9 against which any rain or snow passing said 'screen will impiiige, and 'will be carried thereby downwardly and outwardly of the ventilator.
My invention may be readily removed from the window by merely raising the sash 6 a few inches from its operative position shown, and the ventilator is, therefore, adaptable to all climates and to all weather conditions The ventilator Will be made to t Window frames of dii-ferent widths, and may be made of any desired materials and of any desired finish as, for instance, to conform to the finish of the room provided with the ventilator, these features being arbitrary, as will be understood.
While I have shown a preferred form of structure, I do not limit myself thereto, but may make changes thereover provided that I do not depart from the spirit of the inven.
tion and remain within the scope of the appended claim.
Having Jfully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l A ventilator, comprising a casing open at its outer side and adapted to be inserted beneath a window sash to rest upon the window sill, the closed top of said casing having a slot therein to receive said sash in a weatherproof manner, a normally closed lid Genies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the ommissioner of atentI, Washington, D. G.
